Ford has always relied on higher RPMs over compression. That is the reason why Fords have worse mpg but it does give them an advantage in racing however it is causes more wear and tear on the cam and crank. This is why we see Ford using multiple cams on their engines now to reduce damage to the engine.

Pushrods can rev to 9k but you have to put in a race valvetrain (expensive lightweight strong stuff) to eliminate valve float and things breaking, also adding a dry sump help out a lot, race valvetrain usually can't fit in production small blocks like big pushrods for example (and manufacturers won't put in solid lifters), and dry sump is expensive and rarely shows up in production cars.

Nice video man. Lots of love for the voodoo, but not much for the Quad 4. The Quad 4, and later Twin Cam, motors, are by far the most powerful N/A 4 cylinder motors GM ever put out. They put the currenct ecotec to shame in both performance and reliability. And if Oldsmobile was allowed to bypass the bean counters of the era, I have no doubt that the Quad 4 would have been pushing 210hp stock n/a, and at least 275hp with a turbo and a few lbs of boost. And its still a motor that holds many records that not even the foreign brands can beat today, including the worlds fastest flying mile in a 4 cylinder powered car.

From what I've read, the LS7 weighs only 438 lbs, dry, fully dressed. Extremely light for such high output. They tried to re-introduce it for the new Z06, but, new government regulations prevented it from making much extra power. Despite DFI, cam phasing and cylinder deactivation.

@@daleostrom3613 Actually, I've had one for almost 7 years. I've got nearly 70Kmi on it so far. Uses almost zero oil. Factory ordered it. Been doing oil sampling testing through Blackstone Labs. No wearable materials in the oil so far. Even after 10Kmi oil/filter changes. Seems to've been a major issue from 2008-2010 with heads machined during that period by Linimar Machining in Ontario. The guides were too large in I. D. From what I read, the issue was addressed by Feb of '11.
@Sandy-oy2lr
@Sandy-oy2lr 5 жыл бұрын
@Carl Ryan I appreciate your concern. From my research, this issue is mostly with engine heads manufactured from 2008-2010. In Feb of 2011, GM told Linimar Machining to start doing a 100% inspection processed. The defect was valve guides whose interior diameter was too large and non concentric. I've almost 70K miles (including 5 hours of track time) and, so far, alls well. No significant oil consumption. And Blackstone sampling tests show zero wearable metals (including TI) showing up in the oil. In fact, they said my LS7 is wearing less than a 4 cylinder Honda engine doing 3-4Kmi oil/filter changes. One sure sign of looming trouble is high oil consumption as the stem/guides start wearing out quickly.As well as a DTC miss fire code. Blackstone gave me the go ahead to take this next change out to 11K miles. And I just switched from AC Delco to WIX XP oil filters.

My best friend owned a 1970 Boss 302 Mustang. The factory had a rev limiter on it that started shutting cylinders down at 6150 (+/- 50) RPM's. We disconnected it and would do 8,000 RPM hole shots. I'd speed shift it at about 7.600.

An honorable mention is the 4.6L 32 valve in the 2003-2004 Mach 1s which had a rev limiter at 7250 for the manual cars.
@406Steven
@406Steven 5 жыл бұрын
And an awesome sound to boot! Mine pulls hard right up to around 6,700 or so when the computer starts pulling timing. With some valvetrain work they'll happily run 8k+ and the manuals got the forged crank from the Cobra. But the rods are the typical, brittle modular sintered metal garbage and the block itself will start deforming around 800 HP, the old 90s Cobras and Lincoln Mk. 8s got a much stronger block.
@RidinDirtyRollinBurnouts
@RidinDirtyRollinBurnouts 5 жыл бұрын
@@406Steven I believe it is the camshaft that makes power drop after 5800 rpm, the autos redlined at 6k so despite the extra rev range in the manuals it's not taken advantage of. People take the more aggressive intake cam from the 'A' head 96-98 cobra, which nets about 30whp in the 'C' head Mach1 when degreed, which also bumps the powerband higher in the rev range. Agreed though the valvetrain is very strong, I have forged bottom end with titanium valvesprings, rated for 600-700whp, the block isn't to be trusted past that. I will tell you what though, these cars love nitrous.
@406Steven
@406Steven 5 жыл бұрын
@@RidinDirtyRollinBurnouts I thought they kept the rev limit lower because they put the nodular iron crank from the GTs in the autos. The Cobra cam swap is an easy power adder for sure but they're getting harder to find, those who do have them want a pretty penny for them last I looked. The DOHC 4.6s sure do love nitrous and boost, though. With a little extra huff you can really break some hearts.
@RidinDirtyRollinBurnouts
@RidinDirtyRollinBurnouts 5 жыл бұрын
@@406StevenThat is 100% why it has a lower rev range, I was pointing out that is the same cam profile so regardless of the rev limit difference the peak power is still around 5800. And I agree the cobra cam swaps are getting harder to find since they're not exactly shelf parts, last time I checked they were in the 3-500 dollar range, not bad if you are doing the job yourself but for most people they are likely better off shelling out for a nice cam kit and springs if they are having a shop do it for example.

You forgot the 302 chevy from the Z-28 camaros of the late 60's ('69 i think). With a 3" stroke and a 4" bore and longer rods than the ford variant, it was a very rev happy engine. My father had a friend, that build a home made one. He used a 327 small crank journal block with a 283 crank (same bore and stroke ) and used replacement parts, from the GM parts catalog to build his. I can attest to it pegging 8,000 RPM's, without even trying. This was in the 1970's and was put in a Chevy Vega, it was the fastest car in the county by a long margin. Nobody could beat it, on the track or street. He eventually sold it and the guy paid him to install it, as he had it set up in his car. when asked how it was running, he grabbed the carb arm, rapped it hard and bent the needle on an 8,000 RPM cable drive tach. As far as i knew, every part other than the block and crank, was stock replacement for a Z-28 302. Loved the sound of that engine, will build one one day

Coyotes are the most durable stock engines made in a very long time. A Predator motor can handle 1400 wheel or more reliably with a stock block and crank assembly. Heads and a bigger blower is all that’s needed for some really big power. The Voodoo you just need to replace the head gaskets on models from 2015 to 2018. Those tend to blow. Otherwise the whole Coyote family is unusually strong, even more so than an LS that can’t get to 900 without experiencing reliability issues.

And may I add the 1990 ZR-1 LT5, still holds the 24 hour world speed endurance record at just under 175 mph. It broke the 50 year old record and still holds it for a mass produced production car. A showroom stock engine that was also limited to 70% of wide open throttle. It also still holds the 5000 mile and 5000 km speed records also. Several manufacturers have tried and all failed to break it with actual production cars built and released to the public. Cool stuff. 👍👍🏁

The GM X-code (LQ1) was a 3.4 liter DOHC 60 degree V-6 developed by GM in the late 80's to replace the aging small-block/rear drive configuration and power a modern, safe, fuel efficient, front-wheel drive muscle car for the 90's. It had a production run from 1991-1997 in various GM vehicles. When it was first developed, it had a redline of 7,000 RPM and made 280HP, emissions-certified. GM went to Hydra-Matic and gave them 2 years to make a front-drive transmission capable of holding up to 300HP. Long story short, they couldn't make it happen in the 2 years and keep each unit under budget, so they had Delphi dumb the timing and fuel down in the ECU and the engine ended up having 210HP. These motors were widely hated in their time, (hence the short production run) but I think if it could have kept it's original 280HP tune, people would have been a lot more forgiving of it's un-GM-like quirks. (like timing belts breaking at 70k miles) 210HP was still pretty good for 1991, but these cars weighed 3600 lbs, so they accelerated like a 305 Camaro!
