The engine isn't really called Colombo, it's just the nickname it was called to distinguish it from the long-block V12 that succeeded (as the 330, 375 and 410, nicknamed Lampredi for their designer name, Aurelio Lampredi). For the same reason, the name of the engineer responsible for the engine caught up and Gioachinno Colombo's last name is how we now know his most famous creation.

Turning the screws only affects the idle mix and idle speed. to properly tune one for performance, or to match any performance modifications, jets and power valves must be changed. None the less, you don't need a $5000 scanner, an expensive reprogrammable ECU, to do it. all you need is a screwdriver and a couple of small wrenches. You also don't have to have years of electronics training to be able to know understand what you are doing. I used to repair the new stuff for a living. and went through all the training. I still prefer tuning carbs to tuning electronic fuel injection. Carburetors are more predictable, and the advantages you get from fuel injection in power and performance are negligible, but the parts cost, number of parts that can fail are far more numerous with the latter.

My dad had a 1985 Chevy C10 pick-up with a 305 V8 and a Quadrajet carb. The intake was louder than the exhaust and the sound of the secondaries opening up at WOT is a sound I'll never forget.

You should go check out the Barry Grant Street Demon. Brand new carb design, but they put in enormous secondaries like the Thermoquads. Great cruising economy on the primaries, then a huge whomp when you hammer on it and open up those big secondaries :)

That is the signature sound of a quadrajet. A lot of people hate on them and brag on about the edelbrock they just picked up not realizing that they are basically the same thing. In reality the OEM carbs that came on cars in the 60's to 80's are cheap high CFM.

Those air cooled Tatra v8's sound absolutely gorgeous. Much respect to your next door neighbors for designing a bulletproof engine. So many excellently designed vehicles come from Czech/Slovak plants. Tatra trucks are great, Skodas are legendary in Rally, and Aero Vodochody makes what I consider the most reliable/trustworthy single engine jet, the L39 Albatros, ever made.

11:44 That Alfa Romeo, was my second car back then.It was a second generation 1983 Alfasud. It never let me down and had a tremendous handling, due to FWD and the underbody. The suspension was awesome and a very nice detail was the front disc brakes were mounted close to the gearbox. This ensured a much less weight that had to be dampened out by the front wheels. It drove almost like a gocart and one would have to fuck up really bad to rip this vehicle of the road. It was almost like it had glue on all four tires. Unfortunately, it had one major issue...the red plague, also called rust.

Yeah, cause pulling a bowl off and brushing it out is a very complicated process... They are easier, and more difficult. Simpler, yet more complicated. Excluding common components: Efi, you have injectors. That's it. Controlled by computer that can somewhat tell you when there is a problem. Carbs have jets, boosters, power valves, floats. All kinda shit to go wrong. But most can be fixed to an extent to at least get you home. But the only wiring is in the ignition, maybe electronic choke. Not including stupid electronic carbs. Both have their advantages and disadvantages.

Another thing to note is that if you have electronic valve control... injection into a throttle body is apparently preferable! The other other upside is that it will also sound more like a carbureted engine. Check out the videos on the Koenigsegg freevalve tech... .its pretty impressive.

The story for the Lamborghini Miura was like super off the real events. Lamborghini owned a 250 GT Ferrari, and when he noticed the vehicle had numerous technical issues, he complained to Enzo Ferrari in person. This set off the dispute between the two exotic carmakers and was the primary reason behind Lamborghini's brave decision to start his own auto company. Thus the Lamborghini 350GTV (Turin autoshow one-off) and later the 350GT (production version) were born. The Miura came like 3-4 years later.

The SU carburetor is very unique. It has a needle & piston like a Mikuni that's vacuum operated behind a butterfly which opens from the throttle cable. What works really cool about this is when you open the butterfly the vacuum draws heavy on the jet before the piston opens, so you never get any lag, and it doesn't need an accelerator pump.
@jamest.5001
@jamest.5001 Жыл бұрын
That's like a scooter car and some motorcycle carbs, it's a constant velocity, it requires engine vacuum to open the throttle, the butter fly just controls the vacuum , it basically only allows the throttle the engine can handle, great for daily driving not exactly a performance carb!

Awesome video! Love this one...but it makes me miss my El Camino :( Had a 355ci circle track engine with tunnel ram intake and dual 390 Holley double pumpers....talk about a pain to tune, with 2x four- corner adustments you had to swap alot of jets :) Well-tuned carbs can match or in some cases, exceed the power output of a fuel injection system. This is due to the constant fuel flow of the carb whereas the injectors only pulse the fuel once per cycle. But unless you have really deep pockets, driving a dual-carb V8 just isn't affordable anymore.

I admit I'm crazy about carburetted engines' noise. Their warm growl has no comparison with the engines of today, you could really feel them getting "happier" as they warmed up. With that said, and I might be biased, the best sounding carburetted engine is the Ferrari Colombo V12 which isn't as rare as you said because instead of just the 6 twin-choke Webber from the 250 GTO as you showed, there were also versions with 3 4-barrel Webber carburettors on the 250 GT SWB, 250 California, and 250 GT Berlinetta Lusso or even with 3,3 litres as the 330 GTO, the 250 LM and 250 P. There's nothing carburetted on Earth that sounds that glorious! You migh argue a Ford 427 V8 or a Chevy 308 V8 sound more menacing (and were better options on this list than for instance the Alfa flat-6 or the BMW straight-6) but that's exactly why I love it so much: it's just glorious without the need of being ferocious. It sings without shouting. I waited until the end for you to have added the Ford srtaight-4 from the Escort RS Mk1 or the Alpine A110 1600S but to no avail... also you have to agree the Toyoa 2000GT sound better that that retro-fitted 4-banger, right? Last but not least, you do know the Miura wasn't Ferrucio's first model, right? There were the 350 GT and the 400 GT 2+2 before that... the Miura was premiered almost 15 years after that famous scuff with Enzo! Given that, keep up the good car videos!

Pretty sure it was basically the same engine, though - and still sounds pretty awesome. Not so sure about the myth - I've heard the same thing, but I've also heard that Enzo never refuted it. Either way, it's an interesting story - a little like why Ford took on Ferrari at Le Mans. :-)

KSZ Razor If there was something Enzo Ferrari did better than cars, it was pissing their mates off... Nobody there could shine more than the capo di tutti capi. Amongst all of them, a man who worked at Ferrari, and later went to Lamborghini to create their first V12 - Giotto Bizarrini. Also, he told at the video the Miura was Lamborghini's first "supercar", which I agree - their first car, the 350 GTV (not GTO) was a prototype who couldn't go anywhere cause the V12 engine was ready after the Bertone's body, and when they tried to join them, they found it wouldn't fit... Their second car, the 350 GT, was exactly that, a grand tourer, not a dramatic machine like the Miura.
@aussiebloke609
@aussiebloke609 7 жыл бұрын
Agreed - the Muira was the first "supercar" from Lamborghini. Still, since this vid is about best-sounding carburetted engines...and the 350GT, while not so wild-sounding as the Muira, is still a pretty awesome sounding engine. PS: I'd forgotten that Bizarrini used to work for Ferrari - thanks for the reminder, mate. :-):-)

Carburetors make more power I worked with carburetors most of my career I still own 1 bike and one truck with carbs modern fuels and emissions killed the carb.But to be able to rebuild and tune a carb is an old art fuel injection is easy to work on but in the 80's was the best time to learn the new systems knowing both makes life easy much like ignition systems

You are totaly false: the carbs are always minimum 5% less performing as a injection, because a carb= a air restriction who doest exist with injection...
@LunchboxDOTinc
@LunchboxDOTinc 6 жыл бұрын
where on earth do you get your numbers? there's no set "%" of lesser power, and how do carbs create a restriction that throttle bodies do not? injection provides reliability, and consistency, with the ability to fine tune MUCH more precisely than carbs... but at WOT on a dyno, i can promise you won't see "at least 5% less performance" as Carbs will often perform comparably to injection.... EFI's main benefit is part throttle response....
@rakerholm
@rakerholm 6 жыл бұрын
His percentage is just stupid, BUT carbs actually DO have more restriction. And this is of course due to how a carburettor actually works. To get in fuel, you change jets to work with whatever vacuum you have. With a TB or of course ITB you would never have the need for this vacuum restriction to help pull out the fuel from the jets. It´s simply just common sense and normal logic.
@wilsoncrocker
@wilsoncrocker 5 жыл бұрын
sorry, thats just not true. fi provides more accuracy in fuel delivery, and its more accurate through the entire rev range. you cant do that with a carb. 'but carbs give the engine more fuel cuz you can get bigger jets'. just like with fi you can get bigger injectors. ill grant you that carbs are nostalgic & can be fun, but a tuned fi engine will out-perform a tuned carb engine, everything else being equal.

Lada engine is no joke. It just has really,really,REALLY SHITTY carburettor. The 1600cc gets to 100hp with just DCOE and upped compression. Add cams and new internals and you have 160-240hp depending on revs and tune. And because of low compression it takes Turbos pretty well. There's a thread about the 2101/2102 turbo engine. "200,4 hp and 225 Nm at 1,2 bar of boost" on stock internals from a 1200cc engine.

A carburetor is a much better method of fueling an engine. The atomization is much finer than fuel injection once the engine warms up. That's why there is zero improvement in gas mileage since fuel injection was invented. I've looked straight into many different carburetors and you cannot even see the fuel vapor, it's so finely atomized that there is no visible fuel leaving the Venturi throat of the carburetor. The only time you see liquid fuel is when the engine is cold, that's when carburetors are terrible since the fuel vapor turns into liquid droplets and runs as a liquid along the walls of the intake manifold, and it basically "washes" the lubricating oil off the cylinders causing increased cylinder wear. Fuel injected engines are better because they reduce cold start wear, by atomizing the fuel very good on a cold engine, that's why if you take apart a fuel injected engine there is still fresh crosshatch marks (honing marks from the original engine assembly) even after 170,000 miles. But in terms of peak efficiency, carburetors are perfectly good and can be made to vaporize the fuel so finely that you can literally double your gas mileage by simply heating the fuel in the carburetor to near boiling point to atomize it even further. Since most carburetors sit in the engine bay and don't have a circulating return based fuel system, the fuel is roasting hot. Thus carburetors actually deliver roasting hot fuel into the engine, which is very finely atomized. Roasting hot fuel burns much better than cool fuel. The future of fuel systems is a carburetor based fuel system, not fuel injection. The heated "vapor" carburetor patents have been withheld from the public because the patents were purchased by oil companies a long time ago. If you do some research you'll see that several people figured out how to get 50 mpg out of a large V8 engine in the 1970's, on a large 4000 pound car by using a heated carburetor. Having fuel injection is a very good way of controlling the variables, so there is no way to improve your gas mileage. On carburetor based engines you can easily modify them to run them on hydrogen, natural gas, acetylene, propane, or alcohol and you can adjust both the spark timing and fuel jetting with a soldering iron, a wrench and some drill bits. There's no need for any computers. Although it would be good to have a wideband air fuel mixture gauge. The only way I know of increasing gas mileage on an EFI engine is to switch to different fuel injectors with more holes, increase fuel pressure, remap the fuel mixture curve in the computer, increase the ignition timing by remapping the computer, change to a lower octane fuel (lower octane provides faster burning in most cases, at the risk of detonation). Or you can modify the engine engine by milling the cylinder head, removing the catalytic converter, or changing to higher compression pistons. They also sell thinner head gaskets which are called "MLS" multi-layered-steel that can raise compression. Note: The final way to increase fuel economy without any modifications to your engine is to put a Joe Cell on your engine. I improved my EFI engine gas mileage by 25% with no engine modifications and no computer modifications. Of course nobody believes it's possible so it stops many people from ever researching it. But as a mechanic, I can tell you that it does work. I have some Joe Cell videos on my channel.
