We've got an especially in-depth workbook this week, including the usual tab and notation and performance pointers. Additionally, we've also got the melody and lyrics written out above the bass parts, so you can check the basic grid alignment or juxtaposition. AND we've included some basic warm-up exercises for voice to get you started (incl. some 'quick warm-up hacks' when you don't have time). 🔥Find all of this, right here → bit.ly/3U3KvYI

That was such a fun video! As a bassist who also tries to sing a bit sometimes I enjoyed it a lot :-) You sing great! Very in tune, lots of forward focus (bet you cut through the mix like a japanese butcher's knife!), you also have some soulful vibe to your voice when singing softer, and your harmonies are top notch! And Ian's lows, WHOA! Those lowest notes have almost Zappaesque quality to them. Your duet was absolutely stellar ❤️ The world needs more videos like this!

Of the three instruments I play (bass, drums, and guitar), I find it most difficult to sing while playing bass. Many of the bassline's syncopations don't match with more straight ahead vocal parts, causing me to either match the syncopation with my voice, or straighten out the line. As mentioned in the video, I generally favor simplification of the bassline to ensure the voice is on point. Side note: I want that Warwick!

Another great video from Sharon. On " Something" Paul is credited with the backing vocal so presumably the harmony in the B section. What makes that interesting is how different the two basslines are. The A section when he isn't singing is simpler but much less linear than the much more complicated but more linear B section. I find that the linearity often makes more of a difference than how complicated it is. You often find Paul's bass lines have the less linear pieces in between vocal lines.

It’s so fitting that Sharon would begin with McCartney. (Love to hear her take on Peter Cetera.) He was the first one not only to prove that it’s doable to play the bass and sing together but also the first one who made it awesome. He didn’t want to do it when the Beatles first came together with an actual bass player in their lineup, because he didn’t think it was his archetype. Then, he not only made it his own but made it something cool. I’m a guitar player primarily, but I made a point when I bought my first electric bass in 1996 to join that sub pocket of musicians that can play bass and sing simultaneously. It wasn’t just about Paul McCartney being able to do it, but I won’t deny he was part of the motivation. I was never tempted to buy that Hofner model, but having picked them up at different stages since ‘96, I understand one of the things that is so appealing about them. They weigh practically nothing. Sir Paul was able to front the Beatles and some of his solo projects without being weighed down by a regular bass that’s like a brick yolk. It probably wasn’t the same whenever he played his Rickenbacker.

Its such and important cool skill to have. In my case I had a crash course, in an afrocuban gig, everybody had to sing. Omg... it was quite a challenge. 16 years later I'm still doing it and been improving by the by. So, I'd say start simple with roots and white or round notes... nail the melody along with that root, and from there start to make it more complex. For complex lines and melodies, there is no substite for hard work... try and understand the interaction between the bassline and the melody, there are common points that will help you figure the pattern, and from there it'll always start to make sense... and the good part is that it will feel freakin great and it will open a whole lotta doors for you. Cheers

I think it helped Paul that he played with a pick. A lot of famous bassist-singers play with a pick, probably because you can get a more steady back-and-forth motion that way. At least that's the reason I find playing with a pick and singing much easier than playing with my fingers while singing.
@jessejordache1869
@jessejordache1869 Жыл бұрын
The conceptual approach I use for music in general, and multi-tasking in music in particular is "left brain/right brain". Your left brain says "put your finger on this fret and press down and hold it", while you're right brain says "play". We all start as left brain players: the goal is to be right brained about more and more. (Right now I'm trying to be a right-brained improviser. It's not going well.) To sing and play at the same time, your bassline needs to be automatic -- you shouldn't have to think about the mechanics at all. This frees up the rest of your attention to singing: as someone who's a bassist/singer and done it live -- she's absolutely right about where your attention should be. Hammer the bassline down forwards and backwards OFF STAGE, and concentrate on your singing ON STAGE. One last tip -- humming while playing is a lot easier than singing with words. If you want a nice warm up to get used to controlling two simultaneous melodies, try humming first.

Even George Harrison said he has no idea where Paul came up with the melodies. I agree . As far as bass lines from song to song, every time I play a song, be it my own or not , I hear/play something just a little bit different. No rhyme or reason, just comes out that way. A tad different only adding/subtracting pick ups and inflections.

Really enjoyed that one. Between you and Ian actually coming in on the last song to provide harmonies, it was great fun. So here's a bass line challenge for you, and one that gives me fits. Really enjoy singing the Beatles song, "Don't Let Me Down". I can sing and play all of it just fine except for the part that starts, "I'm in love for the first time, don't you know it's going to last." I can play it without singing it just fine and I can sing without playing it, but I'm lucky to do both at once 2 times out of 5.
