🌿 In today's video, we delve into the captivating world of Begonias, exploring 7 magnificent reasons why these plants deserve a spot in your house, greenhouse, or both! Whether you're a seasoned Begonia lover or a skeptic, this video has something for everyone. Let's uncover the beauty and benefits of growing Begonias.
Reason 1: Diverse Genus
Begonias, hailing from tropical and semi-tropical regions worldwide, form a diverse genus with a vast array of appearances, growth habits, and colours. Forget the misconception that Begonias are just summer bedding plants; there's a multitude of groups, each offering unique characteristics. With approximately 2000 species and countless hybrids, Begonias cater to every taste.
Reason 2: Foliage Royalty
Begonias reign supreme in the realm of foliage. As frequent bloomers, these plants offer double the pleasure with stunning foliage and periodic blossoms.
Reason 3: Low-Light Champions
Living in the north with less-than-ideal light levels? Fear not! Begonias, except for tuberous and semperflorens types, thrive in lower light conditions. Even under the canopy of 250-year-old trees, Begonias flourish, making them perfect houseplants for varying light situations.
Reason 4: Easy Propagation
Much like popular Tradescantia plants, Begonias are a breeze to propagate. Learn the art of propagation to ensure you never run out of these delightful plants. Check the description for a demo video on various propagation methods.
Reason 5: Pruning Perks
Is your Begonia outgrowing its pot? No worries! Most Begonias can be pruned back hard, resulting in tidy, rejuvenated growth. Plus, you get plenty of material for further propagation.
Reason 6: Low-Maintenance Watering
Bid farewell to daily watering chores! Many Begonias prefer a drier environment. Enjoy observing your plants without being a slave to frequent watering.
Reason 7: Air Purifiers?
While it's not extensively studied, there's a consensus that Begonias can filter impurities during photosynthesis, potentially improving indoor air quality. An interesting aspect to consider as you enjoy the greenery in your home.
Reason 8: Subscriber Insights
I reached out to my subscribers, and here's what they had to say about growing Begonias. Their comments might just inspire you to join the Begonia enthusiast club!
In conclusion, if none of these reasons convinced you, perhaps a tour of my Begonia varieties from last summer will. Check out the video linked in the description before making your Begonia purchase. Thanks for watching, and I'll catch you in the next one. Happy growing! 🌱🌸 #Begonias #Houseplants #PlantLovers

LOVE begonias. And you're right, they are SO EASY to propagate. Really loving my "Autumn embers", I've already propagated 3 new plants from my original and started a 4th and 5th. She is an easy and fast propagator from leaf cuttings.

I’m looking forward to loving my Autumn Embers too! 🤣 It’s currently about 10mm across…but…it’s definitely growing despite the cold temperatures and the weather. Next year watch out! Great to hear it’s an easy one to propagate too.

Would it be a huge surprise to say I agree with you?!🤣 The more I get into them the more I love them. It helps, of course, that they seem to grow well in both my greenhouse and my house! Hope you're well, Davy.

@@Grow_Up_Man55 We’re all good this end! The garden has had a big fright this last week although we’ve usually had hard frost before now up here!

Yeah same down here. I still had two garden jobs left but it all came to a halt with the frost. That’s my income down by two thirds till spring. Still, means more time for making videos! 😀

I could personally write a few books on why I love begonias… the family is one that Just Keeps On Giving. When you think you’ve seen it all , there’s always more and there’s just no limits to how crazy the family is capable of looking. I started with the outside crazy looking flower types , woodlarks , glowing embers , any Woodlarks etc etc. but the Foliage house begonias…. Personally just took over my life. After seeing how diverse & complex the family can be , they just took over my curiosities. Now I’ve got my own collection of both , and loads of ones I’ve also experimented with which resulted in colour or shade changes. It’s also really cool to see all these rarer forms being found through out Asia & America , they find new forms all the time & it’s super cool seeing that , especially in these bluer or more metallic forms , not to mention forms like Ferox or masoniana varieties… there almost alien in appearance 😂 There really is something for everyone:)

Of course - I agree with you entirely!🤣 I haven't seen the blue tinges yet - I suspect they need to be in a certain light to show that. I do have a Beg. longiciliata which I believe can show blue - but I've never been able to see it.

@@Grow_Up_Man55 begonia Pavonina is the blue variety I was thinking of ! It's a little pricey sadly.. (£40/60 for early adolescent individuals it would seem) I don't think it's new though actually , but it's awesome to look at , and one that has no doubt be the cause to some hybrids because of its crazy blue hues !! And that bit about the Longiciliata is correct ! Mine actually came with a soft blue hue throughout it , I've sadly lost it now.. within it's new growth but there's a noticeable difference on the green newer growth now , almost a light blue hue but it's more green on my individual. Awww there just absolutely crazy plants , and my personal plant family favourite for so , so many reasons !

You know what? I've heard that said before - unless it was from you!🤣 I must have a go at that one. (Edit: it looks very similar to Beg. 'Connie Boswell' but without the lilac highlights)
