As someone into photography, we also have this saying of “do it, not say it” - that you should not need to explain your photos (in words) to give more context; your audience should be able to perceive it naturally to a certain extent. I think any business of design/creative nature ought to carry this philosophy. Thank you for the sharing Reggie!

In Vietnam, we have a very popular brand category, accounting for 70% of all Vietnamese brands. I don't even know what to call it. It's simply stealing pictures online, printed on shirts with very bad materials, then add the english words "edgy and cool", reflective print and boom, you have a brand. The worst thing about the market is that it only needs a product with the word "limited", the price is unbelievably high. I once remembered that there was a shirt that went up to 200$ (original price is about 25$), not because of the material, not because of the design, it simply has the word "limited". Typical examples for the above brands are: BoBui,Dergrey,Dirty coin,Mikenko and many more (just became Nerk Lurk 2.0 and you are rich)

The "we're sustainable" brand. Don't get me wrong, I love that sustainability is becoming cool, but often if that's the only thing it can be boring. With the exception maybe being if that brand is like truly hardcore in terms of having built a new sustainable technology or is carbon negative yada yada. Even still, without good design I often will kinda not give them the time of day since I can either thrift something or find another sustainable brand.

@leestrz4153
@leestrz4153 2 жыл бұрын
Anyone who actually believes that lives in a bubble or is a gen z. Everyone in suburbia in California has always done that look. I grew up in the 80s and 90s and that was the staple. Bieber wasn't even born yet. Only people who are racist saw it as "thuggish"

@@leestrz4153 You're right , Now u see all the hipsters who are crazy about Dickies , 501 Levi's, Carharrt, Ben Davis, Pendleton, Lee, Champion, Russell Athletic and Champion. I'm old enough to remember when white kids who wore these brands were sterotyped as ' Wiggers '
@THECASUALco
@THECASUALco 2 жыл бұрын
Lee I’m from California and yes this was something that was worn in California BUT those from California tend to forget that outside of CA the world is different. In the South in the 90s and 2000s that was considered inner city hood clothing. And that’s the truth. And it’s always rich when people say something was considered “racist” when they don’t necessarily experience the brunt of it. Being called a thug for ANYTHING from the way you wear your hair to how you wear your clothes isn’t just something to give the “California Exception”. Kids were called thugs in California for wearing the same damn things. The LAPD was one of the most notoriously corrupt law enforcement agencies in the 80s and 90s and singled out the very same kids for “looking the part”. Simple fact is once white kids wore something it was okay in their neighborhoods but in Compton, Carson, Inglewood, Watts, S.Central, and even kids who lived in the inland Empire, that Garb on black and brown kids screamed “Thuggish” to white America. So yes “people like” Bieber normalizing it did in fact make it more comfortable and for the stigma to change. Especially in other parts of the US. You can’t tell me how many black kids who wore the same thing didn’t get stopped because “they didn’t look like they live there”, in CA or otherwise.
@leestrz4153
@leestrz4153 2 жыл бұрын
@@THECASUALco I see your point but I still find it incredibly misguided. Sure Bieber has influence but to think he is the sole reason to normalize something to what you call white America is ridiculous. Bieber is called out for cultural appropriation. He is called a 'wigger' since forever. Did you see the episode of Atlanta where Bieber was black? Also the looking the part thing is misguided. LAPD didn't care what you were wearing. It was more racially motivated but also they were against anything resembling what they considered gang culture. Aside from race they discriminated against people for social class, religion and even the type of car you drive. I was told to never wear my hood while driving, or a baseball cap. That was guaranteed police interaction.
@leestrz4153
@leestrz4153 2 жыл бұрын
@@THECASUALco I'm saying that the teachers, store owners etc who would call people dressing this way would describe them as thuggish we're the racists. For those older people where that wasn't a thing, they were bias. Same as kids wearing all black skinny jeans, a band tee and rocking a mohawk. It is a physical reality that people will have a preconception based on your fashion or even your race. It isn't hard to understand if someone never met a guy with face piercings and tattoos they would assume what they seen on tv or movies etc . I get it, it's the internet but I was in no way attacking you or calling you racist if that's what you thought. While Californians may seem to be in a bubble we have one of the most diverse states in all 50. So many sub cultural, and people from all over. Surfing white boys been rocking board shorts and a hoody in Hawaii, Florida basically anywhere that weather is nice and warm and cools a bunch by sunset.. Basketball shorts and a hoody is not just a California. I never thought of it as a style thing it was always just a comfort thing people wore everywhere. Going to the airport especially 😂. Now I agree LAPD would target people of a certain style and look, but I still think it boiled down more to race and neighborhood. I've had neighbors call the cops on me for walking down a suburb in my hoody and basketball shorts while I'm on my way to practice with a neighbor. I won't say all of white America felt that way but that one old lady on that street did. Majority of the time I just felt people had their guard up in the 90s. I dealt with neo Nazis and bullys and being called racial slurs all through school just for looking different. Guaranteed I've been pulled over more than majority of drivers and the one time I was arrested I was actually the victim. I agree people do play appearances in their ignorance but young white kids in the suburbs have been wearing that look and aren't seen that way since forever. Once they get older and are more intimidating they can get treated differently. I think the internet and exposure to more cultures has brought this down quite a bit and while celebrity exposure can bright light to more people I guarantee you the old lady on that street could see Bieber today walking down her street and she would call the cops so fast on him. TLDR: it isn't specific to California, there are always racist/biases. Nobody is ever safe from other people's preconstructed notions. Painting broad strokes is left to the background, what is important is the detail

Ah yes, the special snowflake fashion archetype, nothing like telling people that you're unique by plastering vague quotes and characters on a hoodie or T-shirt. To add on to the list, the "Anti system" brand, the anti consumerism/capitalism/authoritarian apparel is one of the most ironic piece of fashion a person can wear. THIS! Nothing “couple” about the work done. Don’t be a hater bruh. Too many years of practical study and living in this country to call the ability I gained “a couple of phrases”.

@@THECASUALco you’re right my dude I was hating. Judging you on the very first video of yours I ever watched. And that’s ducked up bc having watched even a few of you videos I can tell you’re very deep in Japanese culture and I really enjoy everything I’ve seen on your channel. So I sincerely offer you the biggest apologies. 🤝

its so funny how many of these categories are really filled with fantastic brands (esp emo and loud edgy stuff) but are just painted by awful large brands that got trendy

One thing rarely mentioned is that all of this is almost exclusively to make money, it's all about money. All the branding is just dollar signs. That's it. Obvious right? But people throw in a lot of bullshit filler to try to not make it about money. But it's of course, almost everyone does it for...money. Most wouldn't give a shit if money wasn't involved. Either making money, flaunting money or representing money. It stopped being deep or inspiring or meaningful to me a long time ago. Now it's purely something I exchange my work, thus money for, in order to cloth myself either from the environment or to fit social norms & requirements (like not going to jail for nudity or wearing scrubs to work). I just don't see enough people doing anything anymore in fashion that comes from a good place. It's MONEY MONEY MONEY, just like these type of videos; that's the incentive. It CAN start from a good place but it devolves into money at some point. Maybe it's weird to say but the more mass produced, the more corporate, everyone's wearing it, the less I judge it these days. So in a weird ways brands like Adidas get my money because everything about it is less obfuscated. It's just mass produced sweat shop clothing with a logo everyone knows and exists in nearly every major store in some form. So I just buy it, wear it, and stop thinking about it. The monetary exchange for goods was obvious and overt and whatever message it's trying to tell the world is already drowned out. It stopped being an identity to me. If a potato sack was the worlds most worn outfit, cheap, plentiful, basic, well known with no stigma, I'd be all for it too.

Well yes. That’s the game until you’re above it that it no longer matters. We live in a world where money runs it. However it’s always about choice. Some of these brands you can choose to wear or not choose to wear. There’s plenty of people that wear stuff that isn’t even close to hype and feel fine about spending there money on something that reflects themselves. I have no problem with the prospect of making money but blindly following something simply because “it is” or “popular” is a waste of money.

People can wear what they want. My only issue with assc is their customer service and how they treat people for being such a simple brand

I usually just buy plain/discrete clothing. Nothing that makes me stand out in a public space at all. I'd rather blend in than be a giant billboard covered in logos and flashy imagery. I stick to wearing similar tones. Fading/washed out greys, blacks, dark red, dark green, navy are all my friends. I used to want to prove something with "Supreme" and other similar branding but now I'd rather not look like I'm trying so hard. There is a way to wear clothes made of affordable quality material and not stick out like a sore thumb. You can still look great without looking like you're edgy or begging for attention. With that being said there really isn't anything wrong with sticking out and being different. If you like the way you look that's all that matters. As long as you dress appropriately for the occasion it doesn't matter what the shades, tones, or tints are. Just do your own thing in the end but be smart about it.

Also for anyone starting a clothing brand, please know that a lot of established fashion companies produce entry point styles with slogans because their cheaper to produce and are waaaaayyy easier to sell.

Reggie calls out brands for being pretentious. Meanwhile the entire video comes off as pretty pretentious. I get what you mean about using these tropes and themes to make a statement and doing it poorly. But personally I'll just let the market do it's thing many of those brands will fizzle out and I couldn't care less if they ride some hype train for a bit. They are just trying to be creative, hustle hard, be edgy, cultural appropriate and make money etc etc 😆
@THECASUALco

Trying to help people make better stuff so they can succeed in this industry is hardly pretentious. Every single reason has a solution AND insures you don’t have to follow hype. Most brand fail miserably and never make money and part of the reason is they don’t differentiate. Stating a truth is never pretentious unless you take offense to it.

@@THECASUALco you right on some level. For sure trying to help is the intent same as saying be creative on a shirt is intended to help that person. You offer a solution which is what to do better. What you miss is some of these brands are doing that part to if just isn't written on the shirt. IE every shoe purchased we donate one to charity (Tom's) or supporting scholarships for HBC etc etc. They aren't always fashion heavy people like yourself who know what they are doing or how to express it but instead a business sometimes not as creatively controlled by a single visionary but are a collective. In something as saturated as fashion it's sink or swim and majority will sink. I just find it funny that the critique comes off similarly to what your are criticizing. I'm glad you are giving advice to those of us who are looking to start a brand and flourish. I took no offense to what you said. I've seen many brands fall and I've worked with many of them. Maybe they would have benefitted to your advice.
