I have a female Blue Heeler who will be 6 in a couple of weeks. She is my second Cattle Dog. With all due respect, I heartily disagree with this video. The special needs of Heelers are the same for either gender. I have had dogs all my life with numerous breeds. My wife and I would never have anything other than a female dog. They are easier to train and much more affectionate than males. At least that’s been our experience.🤔🤷🏼‍♀️

My female heeler has been the best and loyal pup I've ever owned. A good thing with a female heeler if you have other dogs they teach other dogs how to act in the pack . She had an accident leaving her with only 2 legs working. One opposite front and rear . After a month of rehab at home with lots of work . She can walk almost like normal .....such tough animals . Durable, loyal, protective, loving and always wanting to please. The puppy stage is horrible. After that life really does get brighter with them .

I have my second heeler, first one still alive 16 years old and still playing fetch but brother grew attached after I had to leave her to go to boot. Anyway, second heeler is 10 months old now and she's finally starting to relax a bit. Best dogs ever, but those early development months will put you to the test for sure

I’ve had three female heelers and one male. All were totally awesome partners. You just need to understand the breed and the dogs needs. I rescued/adopted a 4.5 year old female from pound. She supposedly was. Surrender from a homeless person. Shelter spayed her, as she had pups a bit before surrendering. She was absolutely perfect. She is 12 years old now and I couldn’t ask for a better partner.

This representation of heelers is not our experience over 50 years of having this breed. Granted, we live rurally and travel daily with our dogs. The heeler females will nurture orphan goats, and they love toddlers. I find they are tougher than the males. They read livestock and signal if an animal has shifted its intent. They WILL HIT if I am in jepordy. We have an intuitive relationship. Pack psychology, no food treats. Our work dogs are off leash where suitable. They travel, meet other dogs, people with no problems. Health issues; this may upset some people, but they seldom see the vet. Average career 10 years, life span 15 years. My 6 working girls are awesome. Give them a job. They need that. This video doesn't represent my dogs. It's actually misleading.

I have a Blue Heeler girl, almost 2 years old now. She's the best dog ever but I also have invested the most time training her, a lot more than all the other dogs we had before her. She's been trained without treats, but with play, praise and her favorite toys. While she loves to run and play Frisbee she's not a Retriever and gets bored quickly. This means I need to use different toys in every session we have. Or she's happy whenever i toss severl toys at once and she's busy "herding" them all back to me. She's also more of a Sprinter than a marathon runner. She gives all she can and then she's tired. But she can do that several times a day, with a long walk in the morning. She loves training, doing stuff. I have to come up with new things for her to do all the time. Mental games make her tired too. She grew up with our now old male dog who is a Blue Heeler mixed breed and she is submissive to him and always has been. She also loves people but is reserved with other dogs until she's met them a few times. Overall she's the best dog ever and I'm thinking of getting a male once my beloved old guy is no more.

I've had both male & female Heelers, Blue and Red for over 40 years and counting. It's best to not have 2 females together UNLESS you have a pack and acerage, if you don't you will have fights. Fights that can get vicious, lost eye, deep tears, lost ears and a lost thumb when an owner tried to stop female pack mates from fighting. I've been lucky most of the time it was lost hair. I did have a great pair of females once, a Red I called Henry who was 3 years old when Buddy a Blue female Heeler pup entered the family. Henry was absolutely the most intelligent Heeler I've ever seen or had, she was Buddy's mentor , tuaght her the house rules, what Buddy could & couldn't do, where she could be & not be. Buddy was a strong willed Heeler and a blockhead for the first 2 years. Henry was animal cop, she enforced the Rules on the cats, goats and horses. I had broken my right femer and had surgery, leaving me on crutches for 6 weeks. On my 1st attempt to grain the horses our 2 gangster goats, Doc and Holiday mugged me for the grain ( a bucket full in each hand) Henry who was sunning herself on the haystack saw the mugging and leaped into action. From then on she was my bodyguard. Another she saw me having a difficult time exercising the horses, I turned them out in our corral , 1 Acre in size, I would stand in the middle, get them running in a circle for a while, reverse their direction for a total of about 30 minutes. The horses were taking advantage of my handicap and exercising half- assed. Without a word from me she entered the corral, got them up to speed and kept it up. At the time where I would reverse them she jumped back in, turned the horses and kept them at the same pace I always did. Or if a horse would get lose, I had one I called my corral clown, he was always up to something, he would untie himself from the trailer and wonder off to eat some desert grass, Henry would go get him and with his lead in her mouth bring him back. When riding horses ( we live in the desert South West) Buddy would take the lead while Henry would constantly circle the group, they were on the look out for snakes, many times they found them. They would then work the snake together keeping it away from the group until we were out of danger then run back and resume the patrol pattern. We had several vehicles, a Jeep CJ, 2 Mustangs, a 1st generation Bronco, 2 pick up trucks and a FL 70 Toter rig. I could tell Henry which vehicle we were going to use and say " Henry, load up in the Jeep or load up in the red pickup or the blue and when I would come out she & Buddy would be happily waiting in that vehicle. Henry could spell , most of the time we would take them with us and as soon as Henry figured out we were getting ready to go she would run grab her leash and wait by the door. It would led to such sadness when we would say No Henry, not this time. So we took to spelling" G O F O R W A L K" or L E T s G O , by the 3rd time we did that Henry was at the door with leash in mouth, sitting. I could write a book on Henry alone , sadly she passed away at 12 years due to cancer. That lead to research on dog food which caused us to radically change what we fed our pack. Heelers are the greatest, most loyal, intelligent, loving and aggravating breed I've ever had. They are bred for the wide open spaces of a ranch, they can work cattle 10 hours a day in the heat of summer or the cold winter of high ranges without issues. Their double layered coat protects from heat and cold, they have thick pads that do the same. I ve worked my Heelers from the deserts of Arizona and New Mexico to the Panhandle of Texas to the mountains of Colorado and British Columbia in the winter and they love the life outdoors. They're okay with short stays in small places for short periods but climb the walls after that.

Thank you for giving advice and sharing your experience! Would you mind sharing what you found is best to feed them?
@richardc7721
@richardc7721 8 ай бұрын
@@kcb8862 the best is mimic the way they would eat in the wild. Heelers are a most unique breed. Other dog breeds trace back to the wolf , the Heeler adds into its gene pool the Dingo. The Dingo is not a dog, not a wolf, yes its in the canine family but not dog or Wolf, they have their own classification, that is why Heelers are so different from other "dogs" Dingos are highly intelligent, close family structure and THE top tier hunter in Australia among other unique traits. One important difference is Dingos can not break down sugars, simple carbs, so is the Heeler yet commercial dog food runs 45-75% carbs. Dingos eat mostly animals, both what they kill and freshly dead, they do eat fruit and vegetation mostly from their kill. To the Dingo the favorite treat is the stomach and upper intestine. That provides the major source of fruits and vegetation, the difference is that its already being or is digested by the animal they eat. There's several good KZfaq channels from Australian on both the Dingo and the Heeler breeds, The Dingo Research Institute of Australia is a good one, there's a video on a Dingo pack that is isolated on an island in Australian, Frasier Island (I think ) it shows how intelligent they are. We feed mostly fresh meats, low carb vegetation small amounts of fruit, less than 5% by volume. Not everyone lives on or even near a ranch.We feed the meats and eggs & most vegetation raw. They have strong digestive systems. For times we can't, we use dog food that is cooked on lower temps, commercial food is superheated in high pressures kettles that look like ones used in beer making with temps over 1200F. That kills most nutrients then they add back a chemical solution of vitamin & minerals. By using low heat or dehydration you don't kill the food. My oldest daughter uses dehydration for their Heelers and a winter supply for themselves, getting snowbound for a week or or more is a fact of life in some places. The high sugar content of commercial dog food adds to the "Hair on Fire " rep that Heelers have, much like feeding your kid lots of sugars then sending them to school expecting them to sit quietly for hours, not gonna happen. Hope this helps. Feel free to ask more Q's anytime.

I have a female heeler and though she has high energy and is dominant towards other dogs, she’s the most trustworthy and loyal dog. She never runs away so i can feel confident when she’s off leash and she follows my commands. She’s three now and has her energy level is more stable. She’s wary of strangers but I don’t necessarily think it’s a problem and she warms up to people quickly after being introduced. One thing I noticed is she’s not very interested in playing with other dogs - she just wants her ball or frisbee.

I was gifted a Femal Blue Heeler rescue, it was stated this animal would be perfect to my personality. Being I never owned a dog, and had always been a cat lover. My mom has a cat, this is what my experience has been like. 1 High Energy Levels, She is the most lazy dog I have ever seen. The cat has more energy in one paw than she has in a entire day. Also on that same note, there are many breeds I have seen that also have high energy levels, so it can be said just the same, Blue Heeler is no different in this. Also she only chews her bone. 2 Need for mental Stimulation, She knows breakfast time, dinner time, has her own bone and knows it is her property, and her own room and she knows that is her own property, and she is very happy and very content, with her smile that shows up from time to time and her grunt noises she makes. 3 Strong Herding Instinct, She does nothing, even when I am outside with her doing stuff, she is doing her own thing. The only time I seen anything in relation is if I am not moving fast enough for her, but that is mostly barking. 4 Potential For Dominance, cat runs the house, and she doesn't care. She is either laying by me, or chewing on her bone, or taking a nap. 5 Need For Extensive Socialization, Around people and other animals, she doesn't care unless someone puts their hands on me, this the only time I see her go into a stalking position and quietly walk up on them just like a wolf. 6 Health Issues, I find this redundant, because this very same thing applies to all animals that are pets, Blue Heeler is not special in this. She is also "fixed". 7 Not Ideal For Apartment Living, She might work well in a apartment. She is a ambusher, this is very clear. Cause she is always quiet. She only barks when it is dinner time, or I come back after being out without her. She knows the sound of my car. She doesn't do the random "bark at everything". Also on a side note, once again, this can be said about any dog. She prefers to be inside in the AC due to the summer heat, the warmth due to the winter cold, and also because it is dry when it is rainy outside. She is will only go outside when I am out doing stuff, like working on the car, or to go "bathroom" time, or to go with me in the car. That is about it. She not into the whole yard thing of chasing balls, and sticks. She leans more to the pamper of life. I think I did good with the rescue dog, in which cats had been my life, and this dog was the first time ever, considering when I got her, she had all the hallmarks of a abused animal. After having her for 3 years, no dog classes, I say things are going really good! if something happen to me, there is a high probability she would pass on too as a result of the disconnect from me by it. Looks like the constant ownership flip has ended with me....

Everything correct. But cats always run the house. I had the most dominant Border Collie girl in existence. She was the untouchable big boss of a pack consisting of her, another (male) Border Collie, a male Labrador Retriever, a male Yorkie and a female German Shepherd. But, even she knew, that the cat was the real boss.

All of these can be any heeler, male or female. But even then, not all heelers will show these traits. I have a female red heeler and she’s super cuddly, is happy living in our apartment and she’s a lazy potato when inside. She does have a high prey drive and needs a good amount of exercise/walks every day.

I’ve owned many ACD’s, mainly females. There are differences between male and females like in other breeds. As a general rule I would get a male and female as the girls do tend to live up to the name ‘bitches’. My males have been sweeter and more affectionate but my females have been extremely loyal and take charge kind of dogs. I haven’t noticed any difference in temperament between the reds and blues. I personally wouldn’t live with a pack of ACD’s running together. I’ve owned GSD’s before my ACD’s and the GSD are typically fine running in a pack as are Kelpies, Border Collies and many other breeds. I really feel that ACD’s long to be your one and only companion and working partner in day to day life. I’m sure in a real life working environment they would be better. I adore the breed but in all cases….get a puppy from a reputable breeder! Also, not one of my cattle dogs have EVER put it’s mouth on a child….EVER!! Mine adore children and even one of my females who doesn’t enjoy rough physical play will just leave the situation without biting. They are head strong, intelligent, resilient, loyal, faithful, hard working and fun dogs that require training, socialization and a strong pack leader (YOU).

So these are Cattle Dogs in General, it's not a set Male or Female traits. These videos are a waste of brain power at this point. I have 5 Cattle dogs, all indoor dogs for the most part ... all sleep in beds... all have a ton of love and snuggles. They are amazing Adventure Dogs and Guard dogs. Amazing with my kids. Great with other animals. I have had minimal fights (Maybe 2 actual scuffles). These dogs are great for a REAL DOG OWNWER. If you are lazy and don't want to walk your dog or give it proper training then don't buy a dog because they all need the same attention... just buy a cat 😂

Same with my pack! I have all females, aged 11.5 years to 1.5 years old. The youngest one (heeler mix) was recently in heat with no issues. They are all rescues. Two heelers (both deaf), two mixed heelers, an Australian shepherd, and a little 11.5 lb. terrier who is afraid of none of them! 😅 We have a daily off leash 3 - 5 mile pack walk that bonds them as well as exercises them. We often get compliments from other walkers, hikers, bikers and motorcycle riders. Sometimes we even walk with other dog people and have up to 9 or 10 walking as a pack. Great fun!!

I’m sorry for my English. It’s not the best but anyways I wasn’t really a pets person, where I live if you don’t have a cat, your house will get infested with rats in a heart beat so I’ve always had cats around and I’ve never owned a dog in my 30 years of life. 2 years ago I “temporarily” adopted an adult (Don’t know how old she was but I know she wasn’t young) female blue heeler. She was in terrible living conditions and I said what the heck, what’s the worst that can happen. Now I can’t see myself with her, I was blown away by how smart she is, i go out on my bike with her and if she sees a bunch of people ahead of me crammed up she would turbo ahead and bark at them like if she understood there in my way and it’s almost comical on how serious she takes our biking sessions 😂 she’s a different dog when we’re out and about 😂 like the moment we Ieave the house she switches from being this lovable jolly dog in to a “this is no time for games maaan”. love my manchas she’s a great dog if not the best. I have a female blue heeler that is about to turn 8 and she listens off the leash, we live in a apartment, she is extremely well behaved, smart, and pretty lazy. This is my second one. I think you are completely wrong.

Nothing Wrong with Video . I think it’s a Good Video for People who buy dogs because of their looks . And then they work 8 or more hours a day and put one of these dogs in a crate damn near all day , all week . Just like all these idiots that have to have the latest Fad and buy a Belgian Malinois now because their put in a movie 🤦🏻‍♂️ and unfortunately , especially for the dogs, there are so many who don’t use Crates or E-Collar’s properly!

My dogs work cattle and the females are the best for what i do. A female is all I will work with. The males are harder headed, females want to please. I have three females now.

I have 4 belgian malinois and my female blue heeler is chill minds her own busines quiet and pretty calm compared to my fur missiles. So I have to disagree. In fact, I prefer females over male heelers

Any of the reasons listed to not own a female can be applied to the male blue heeler also. Geeze . They like acres to run on and are not apartment dogs. If you treasure your plants, trees, bushes the female dogs are not so apt to mark their territory with them as male dogs do.

A male or female you haven’t made the point and I totally disagree with you I’d say if you have trouble with female dogs, it says more about you than the dog

Nothing really informative here, you can save a few minutes. They are hyper, confident and might be deaf. Interesting fact she skipped, they might be deaf because they bred in dalmatian.

I’m sorry, but what do these traits have to do with the females? These are all challenges that come with either gender.

Both sexs deserve a big yard and a rural setting ,city living never gives the breed a chance to develop its potential and causes behaviour problems The dog really needs to work hard run hard and to please a tough boss not a mummy or daddy type When you see a cattle dog look at you with that intense stare it needs a d wants direction not a weight twining treat

Not sure why this was targeted towards a female Heeler, they all share the same traits!!! Sex of the dog does not dictate how they act, it is on the individual animal.

Why does this video have "female" in title? Makes no sense, it generally speaks about Heeler as a breed without regarding its sex. What's more, male are much likely to express dominance compare to female.

Sorry, but this is just the most superficial blah blah dog-video I've seen in a while: 1) All of the "7 reasons" can be stated for: Australian Shepherds, Border Collies, Collies, Shelties, Kelpies, Berger de Pyrenees or any other intelligent herding dog. 2) None of these reasons has any connection to the female gender of cattledogs or all the above mentioned breeds. If you have an intelligent dog that needs physical and mental work, but you don't provide it, you'll get an underchallenged problem dog - simple as that. No matter if female or male, no matter if cattle dog, sheep dog or any other herding dog. It's always and everywhere the same.

I love my female blue heeler. Just got a pup last November. My first blue heeler was a female and lived for 13 years. She was the best dog ever. I live in a suburban town basically. She was short and hefty. My male is a brute. Last time at the vet he weighed 80lbs. He’s all blue. Blue tint with the Bentley mark. He’s about 6 years old. My little lady is awesome. She’s tiny. Smart as the other 2 if not smarter. She weighs around 38lbs. Can be a nasty bitch tho. But it’s all up to the person how the dog is raised.
