I'm always a fan of having a Plan B lined up (even when you're not worried about being laid off or fired and you're in a job you love and not a toxic AF job). Do you have a plan B (or have you updated your resume and LinkedIn)?

Some of my best friends were co-workers and we've remained friends even after leaving the horrible jobs we met at. If you can't or choose not to make friends at work, it will be miserable by default. Some of your best opportunities can come from friends, you never know where they may go in life and they might want you to work with them. It's like the old term they used to use "Networking".

It's been 4 months now. I am hanging in there. Been 'promoted', without pay, to be assistant to the office manager. All while answering the phones (the guys refuse to learn the proper way to handle phone calls [purposely?!] so they are pulled from that duty and relegated to opening the front door for our guests, or, taking the car for a wash, or gassing it up. Occasionally they take out the garbage...but that's usually my task as well. Taking care of flowers, arranging, prayer cards, filing, unpacking urns, correcting directors work, ETC., all while learning the-special-way Excel is used for logging data...By the time I leave each day I am so frazzled, sore from running around the building, and blurry eyed. *all for $12.00 an hour Grateful for the paycheck but need more money an hour for this!

I had a job where my perfect performance review dropped to rock bottom. I asked my supervisor what was going on, she *_knew_* that the scores were bogus and I asked her to just be straight with me on whether or not I was going to be fired or not. She knew I didn't deserve to be fired, but they needed to show that I was fired for cause. I said enough with the games and took my report to the department head. Wrote "LIES" on the paperwork, made a copy of it and then told the department head "If you want to fire me, just do it." So he did. I just walked out, leaving almost nothing at my desk. When the supervisor took my side in the unemployment hearing I was frankly shocked. After the hearing though, she said she had already got another job and that if they could do what they did to me, they would do it to anyone, so she started looking for another job the day of my review. I was touched that someone would have my back like that. In the years since that, I have been very attuned to dysfunctional work environments, and I never stay there for long. I am so glad that I am retired now and no longer have to deal with the utterly toxic work environment that exists in America today. To everyone who is working, Look for a job that makes you happy, and work with coworkers that you enjoy being around. Life is too short to be playing stupid employment games.

Recap: 1. You start to get nitpicky negative feedback. 2. Work gets reassigned to other people when it normally would be assigned to you. 3. Red Alert: Your manager starts taking a lot of notes and doing a lot of summary, follow-up emails. Reply to clarify what they got wrong and what you've done. For your own records. 4. You're set up to fail. You're given a huge project with not enough time. 5. Relationships with people at work start being distant. Work friends might start to distance themselves from you. 6. You're put on a Performance Improvement Plan. Ask yourself if it's structured to help you succeed or setting you up to fail? 7. Gut feeling. Bonus: Be prepared. Build confidence because losing a job can major hit.

I recently got laid off and there were some clear signs I picked up on but tried to brush off as purely paranoia before I got the news. 1. Work that was supposed to come my way suddenly wasn't talked about anymore, 2. Manager's disinterest in what I was doing, 3. Manager saying "oh you don't have to be in that cross-departmental meeting if you can't make it", 4. "we're prioritizing our efforts and focusing only on what moves the needle" and 5. the worst of all, being asked to compile my working assets on the company's drive "so people can have easy access and don't have to ask you for it" (I'm a designer). All of that along with a random 1:1 with the manager set up on a Friday afternoon a week in advance. Like I said, I picked up on these, but wanted to believe it was just paranoia. When I logged in to that meeting and saw that the company's commercial director was also in the call, I knew right away it was over.

Sometimes. If you're terminated sometimes you can collect unemployment (depending on where you live); also depending on the role and company you might get a severance package. The VP I reported to engineered one of the key sources of staff withdrawing from my group. The only notice I ever got of this was when my peer, that I coordinated with, informed me they were withdrawing. They had legitimate concerns but they could have been addressed. VP knew about the whole situation, knew there were issues that could have been addressed, but never once informed me. I found out months later that he had facilitated the mortal wounding of my group. I got fired today. It’s been leading up for months ever since I first stood up for myself. It was a full on slash in the amount of inclusion in important meetings and info after that. I was continually being given impossible tasks outside of my work title without any training and expected to figure it out. I was told I was going to promoted in the first month I started, and start being trained, yet I started doing the new position + my current one. Literally at the bottom of the pyramid while still doinv jobs that were 2 positions above me + any IT work. I was a receptionist yall. Doing. IT. Work. To make it better, a toxic co worker was involved, totally taking away any good i did do. Micromanaging me, completely going over what I did but in the most random way like I would open a box of face masks and she would come around the corner and fold the corners differently. So odd. She would slam doors or call me stupid when I told her that I didn’t need help nicely. I would bring it to my boss’s attention and was told “it was just her personality” “she had a hard week” I went in and did my all everyday, but a month ago was told to recreate the book that gave directions on what my job was to do. I re wrote everything, finally thinking I was getting recognition. I wish that I would have realized I was creating the new training book for the person who’d replace me. A week ago, was my breaking point. I was told I wasn’t working urgently or hard enough. I cried, the boss also attacked my parenting & personal life. Over the weekend I fully prepared to be fired. Today we met again, she asked what She could do differently, i told her. She argued, interrupted, was shaking and trying to defend everything I had said with little actual proof. She told me to start looking for a new job so that she didn’t fire me and i couldn get unemployment. I said i was there to do my job and wouldn’t quit. After while, she was approved to let me go. I didn’t cry one bit this morning until I carried all my stuff to my car and dropped my strawberries then the tears starting flowing. The worst part of being fired is feeling so disposable. She told me to my face she doesn’t care about her employees she cared about the profit for the company.

There is negative feedback from the start. It’s part of the training I’m getting. My supervisor didn’t even want me to get an interview said I was overqualified and then the owner got ahold of my resume and wanted to interview me. My training hadn’t been very good and I’m told on the one hand to give it months before I get everything and on the other telling me to go fast and frowning in me taking notes. I’m told in a daily basis about my mistakes by either my supervisor or other senior employees that are a good 20 years younger and one in particular doesn’t like me. 😞 it’s a small business and I really need full time work. My living situation is also difficult. I’m trying to reinvent my life but I seem to be hitting speed bumps. Just wanted to vent, thanks for listening since I have no one to talk about this with

Males usually are more “open minded” and “direct” , I made a lot of mistakes and he called me out but he pushed me to do good and I eventually did, female managers that i dealt with are fake, i ask them for feedbacks they say “dont stress too much about it” and then gossip when you make mistakes 😂

My god... it's like you use to work at UPS. This is exactly what they'd do to PT Sups. The paper trails. The setting you up for failure. The constant ridicule and asking when you will resign already. They will even let their favorite employees get away with coming to your area, harass you with refusal to stop or do work. And vandalize you car. And all the drama starts the moment you get a complaint about you sent to HR. You were doing just fine your whole career until that happened.

And running your area with 100% efficiency. But it’s hard changing someone’s mind when they’ve already made it. That and the sort for my area kept changing every week. Having to swap out the labels. Memorizing all the zip codes for the state. Him making my area twice as big. Writing me up for almost running out of labels. Even when he told me not to print out too many. And I rolled with the punches for as long as I could. I could go on all day about the things they have done to me. I walked out on that job. After years of commitment and dedication. And he laughed me out the door. All because I didn’t have the tools to combat against the harassment back then.

I wish that I had seen this video years ago when it happened to me. These points are spot on, but the tricky thing about these scenarios is that, if you're a person who is really pressed to be successful and "win", you really try to make things work, not realizing that it is an unwinnable situation. When you're going through it, the gaslighting can really do a number on your awareness and ability to trust your gut. Unfortunately, I fell for the "perfect professional" professional advice when I entered the workforce, and wasn't aware of the reality of the corporate world.

A dead giveaway that you are about to be fired from a toxic workplace is when everyone seems to have a running joke that you're not in on. All your co-workers know you're about to be fired and want to stick around for the show, the only thing worse is when smart arse customers are sitting around with a big smirk on their faces and you're about to be fired in front of them.

Cold shoulder from the the management team is the main indicator I have seen. Also keep an eye on your boss's body language. Lack of eye contact being the biggest one. Daily communication will also dry up. Your boss will seem embarrassed or generally uncomfortable in your presence. The decision to get rid of you may be made several weeks in advance of the actual firing. Once that decision has been made you have become irrelevant to the company and basically dead to your boss. in my experience the signs are pretty obvious and unless your boss is a trained actor or a sociopath you will be able to see it coming even if there has been no paper trail or verbal warning.

Yeah my supervisor was showing alot of signs and she had attitude behind it. There were times I wanted to report a retaliation case on her, but thought maybe I was overthinking it in fearing losing my job. But yeah the 1st thing I noticed was my hours were being scruffed even when we had payroll to spare b/c she was asking other part timers to stay longer, but wouldn't ask me. Then she assigned different ppl to do my job and they wouldn't even finish it.... go fking figure. Anyway I was on my final warning during those times and now they fired me b/c I overslept lol I still came to work only to get the last bit of hours I could grab b4 the sendoff. Oh well Fuck Target.

You get the silent treatment from the boss, and when they speak to you it is in an almost silent tone of voice. Then if you are paid hourly, they only give you enough hours to cover the cost of your benefits and payroll deductions resulting in a paycheck for $0.00. I saw this happen to people in the workforce over the years working before they were fired. It then happened to me, and I was already prepared because I had already updated my resume. Then I found another job three days later, and gave them my two week notice before they could fire me. Another trick I have seen pulled is your weekly hours are cut so drastically, and they only give you three or four hours for the entire week. Hourly paid employees may also notice everyone's hours getting cut. Then they give you the excuse that corporate wants us to schedule people for fewer hours, and to call them in if we need the help. Then when this happens, when you go to work there are people working who are not on the schedule. They do it because they want you to believe everyone has been cut but they never call you in. The other employees hours were not cut when they were called in, and their weekly hours are still the same. It just doesn't show up on the schedule. 12:36

The big flag I should have paid more attention to was when they decided to bring in a consultant. This person started proposing a solution that I pointed out had some technical flaws and I think that pretty much sealed the deal. Besides unreasonable work load for a team of 5 and moving the goal posts constantly. I was actually relieved when they called me in that Monday to tell me I was done there. It was a pretty toxic environment, plus there weren't even windows in the office area where I worked - it was like working in a cave. Now 2 months later I'm about to start a new gig with +20% higher pay.

This is a really great video, EVERYONE IN ANY JOB should see this, especially if you work in an office environment. She is describing to a T the dysfunctional culture and setting of an office where knowing how to "play ball" and navigating the politics of the office is absolutely crucial. I wish I had seen this in my younger days, I would've saved myself a lot of anguish. My small piece of advice - as much as possible, try make yourself inexpendable in some what or manner for as long as possible while crafting your backup plan and eventual exit.

You should’ve also added change of bosses. When I was younger the boss that hired me died and someone took his place that didn’t like me and I was let go because he wanted a relative of his to take my job. Now companies are sold all the time and employees are fired because they aren’t needed or they contract the jobs out to a different area. Many times this comes as a surprise because they assure the employees they’ll still have a job. One of “The Office” series went into this as the manager was told to fire a retain amount of employees.

I remember having a toxic boss who was trying to fire me. She was giving me unreasonable assignments and consistently switched deadlines, hoping I would not meet them. What she didn’t know is that every Saturday, I would sneak into her office, go inside her files on me and find out what she has planned ahead of time and always exceeded the deadlines. It drove her crazy. Finally I found another job, and she was relieved…. Initially 😉 A week BEFORE I gave her my ONE week’s notice, I saved all of my work files, emails and contacts and saved them to a personal hard drive. Then deleted everything from my desktop and laptop. Since I was doing all of her work, she literally had a nervous breakdown after I left, and quit.
