This.... is why no employees ever trusts HR. They claim or even train that they don't retaliate against harassment reports. It's all just legal compliance training. The reality is different unfortunately. The best move is to leave the team or the company if it's a major problem. Don't mention the incident even when HR asks during the exit interview. Best to avoid the exit interview altogether.

The best thing to do in these situations is start a new job hunt and leave. One of two things will happen if you stay: You'll get fired on some technicality or they'll drive your mental health down so far that you have to quit. Both not worth it. Better to leave with dignity and before you lose it.

My last job was toxic af that it ended like an abusive relationship. I wasn't liked any more, the first sign was not getting hours, I was excluded from meetings, left out on conversations, I was ignored whenever I asked something or said something, I found out that my coworkers constantly undermined me in public, so what it looked like: I come in 2 minutes late and I'm called out and made fun of in front of everyone, or I'll say something and my coworkers would exchange glances like there was an inside joke. There was such a huge shift and I got another job where I'm being valued

It’s called quiet firing it happens everywhere I’ve seen it and also been a victim to it myself a long time ago in my early 20s. Best advise is quit and leave them in the lurch. Companies sweat big time when staff leave because it puts the burden on then now.

It boils down to whether the managers like you, in a typical office. A certain number of managers are bullies/psychopaths, they always need a victim due to their own aberrant psychology and it could come down to them feeling that they can get away with it. One thing with bullies is that if you don't stand up to them they will carry on because they get a twisted kick out of it, it's basically like the playground. I'd say always belong to a union and if you get the sense you're being scapegoated, be prepared to confront them directly over it.

My management team told me they hope to keep me for a little ng time then even since after my confirmation, pay raise and confusing things that made me feel devalued, I still tell them voluntarily that they don't need to worry because I am staying there even if I have to concrete my feet to the parking lot I don't plan to leave them and in saying that its kind of a compliment to them that I DO value them and don't want them to sink if they mistakenly would replace me w a real dingbat because candidates can be anything they want to get the job but that doesn't mean they can handle a workload of 4 into 1 person, by myself and I like that

I feel like my company was trying to push me out. Even though I was doing the work of 3 people they refused to hire anyone else. So when they hired someone else after 2 years and my boss quit and was replaced, I just decided to quit since I did not want to train the new person, I did not get along with the new management, and I was afraid they were just going to get rid of me after I trained the new person. It was just too much to deal with all the hours I was working. I am so glad I quit.

I agree with all the points except 6:35 part where one should report to HR if a manager is being hostile or harassing to chase you out. From personal experience, HR won't do anything even if you have a legal team and instead, they will side with the manager unless you're part of a protected class.

Very good points! I have been in that situation in the past. In these situations, I blamed myself, questioned my worthiness, developed anxiety and became physically unhealthy. I am so glad I found the help that I needed and pursued my own goals by finishing school and to own three side hustles to sustain not only my happiness, but my sanity. It’s so refreshing to have people like you to help other keep an eye for these signs. I wish i would’ve found you earlier in my career. But lets keep the conversation going.. let’s ( in a way) expose employers. Livelihood is a necessity, not a choice.

Instead creating trouble: for those who work diligently & ignore them!! But, even ignoring them- make it worse & get harassed by team. Making me look like bad guy, when problem is dont check their behaviour they should focus on working, instead of ganging up on employees like me! Its called harassment & they should be accountable for consequences, not inflicting pain hurt onto others! Disgraceful! Ppl need get life or mind they’re business! Let ppl live & do they’re job! One day I refused to leave and they called the cops. I threatened to get a lawyer and they said go ahead. I did nothing wrong they had no right to do this. I apologize if I’m all over the place, but here’s my story: In late February 2022, I worked remotely for a small company located in Iowa as a featured web writer. I basically wrote articles that focused on how to use products from a well-known tech brand. I felt like I was on cloud 9 after years of looking and applying for jobs. I was doing something that I enjoyed, the people seemed nice and were eager to help me, I got to travel to Iowa (plane ticket and hotel room was paid for by the company) for company week in July and really enjoyed myself. They even told me not to be afraid of asking for help and to utilize resources. I even had articles that were doing really good with clicks and views. All of that changed in October. In the early hours of October 5th, my mom and I had to move out of our apartment because our jerk of a third-floor neighbor flooded us out, and we lived on the first floor. We had to stay at a hotel. We had no idea when we were going to either move back in or get another permanent place to stay. Plus, my mom had to do training for dialysis, and she needed a stable place to live. Thankfully, I had some PTO left and I told my former boss and the execs the situation, and they let me take some 2 weeks off to focus on moving our stuff out from the apartment so that it could be worked on. After the two weeks and still at the hotel, I went back to work on Oct 17, and my boss welcomed me back and told me that I need to do my employee evaluation. I decided to get it over with. I took the Zoom call, and that’s when they (the execs) told me that I was going to be put on probation due to performance. What really didn’t sit well was when one of the execs mentioned that they fired a co-worker of mine because “he wasn’t interested in improving his performance.” He was hired a week after I was hired. I felt that disclosing his termination during my evaluation was a bit unprofessional of the execs to do. I might be wrong, but I heard that when you do an employee evaluation, it isn’t a good idea to talk about other employees. Anyway, the execs were like, “We don’t want to let go of you, and that’s why we’re putting you on probation.” Then, they talked about what they enjoyed about me, as if that was going to make things better. After the execs left the call, my boss told me that she was surprised that they were going to make that decision regarding my employment (she participated in the call), but that she would make sure that she would help me make improvements on my performance. They didn’t give a certain time frame for the probation, and I was hoping I would be able to redeem myself. We finally moved into another apartment in early November, and I had to take some more days off to accompany my mom with her dialysis training. Both November and December were very busy when it came to work. Not only was I writing articles and reporting to my boss and two other people, I was also answering tickets from people who read the articles from the website, and the volume was usually high. Plus, answering tickets was very stressful because you have to make sure that you’re providing accurate information, and many of the tickets that people sent had very complex questions. The co-worker that they had let go of was doing the same tasks as I was doing, so that meant more work for me. Then, around that time, my boss wasn’t available as usual because she had a family crisis. She basically made sure that two of my co-workers with more experience made sure I was getting everything that I needed to improve my performance. My workload was very heavy. One Thursday in December, one the execs wanted me to join Zoom call, and I was nervous. I joined the chat, and they wanted to let me know that I was getting a bonus, and told me that I deserved it for working hard. I was relieved because I thought they were going to fire me then. Then, they decided to change the format of the web articles. On Jan 4th, My boss told me to join a Zoom call, and I already knew what it was about. They basically said I was being let go. They even talked about how they enjoyed me and how I was such a hard worker. I hated it because I felt that I had fitted in. A few weeks after I got let go, I decided to check on the co-worker that they had fired prior to me. He told me that they had fired him two days into his probation. The whole, ”He wasn’t interested in improving his performance” explanation doesn’t make any sense because how can someone tell in two days if a person isn’t showing interest in improving their performance? To me, that’s not enough time, but of course Iowa is an “at-will” state. It was a shock to me when the execs brought it up because I felt that this co-worker was doing better than I was doing. I hope he’s doing okay. Another thing that kind of makes me wonder was that a month or two before I got flooded out, my boss reached out to me to see if I could answer tickets from customers, and I said yes because I remembered seeing the task as part of the job description when I applied. Guess what? She had asked the same co-worker at the same time and we both were trained at the same time. So, I feel that they were already planning to let us go. Also, while I was out due to the flooding, they were interviewing with one of the freelance writers, and they hired him to replace the co-worker who got fired. I got to meet him, and he was nice. But that goes to say they were already making changes within the company. When I was employed at that place, I felt a sense of belonging somewhere. Even when I went to Iowa for company week, I enjoyed myself. They even gave everyone a t-shirt and a water bottle with the company logo. We even took company photos. I wore that shirt and used that bottle with pride, and I was hoping that I would be able to attend this year’s company week. Now that I’m no longer working there, I can’t even bear to look at the shirt and the bottle. They say it was due to performance, but sometimes I wonder. Maybe they saw that I enjoyed my job “too much”. Maybe it was due to me being the only Black person working there at the time, and they just chose me as a diversity hire. I will never know, but I do feel that something was a bit off about the situation. As for me, I’m currently applying for jobs and I’m working on getting a Google certificate for UX design through Coursera. Wish me well.

When bosses say they're going to hold you to "higher standards" such as when you join a union where they advocate for more pay and benefits and they also ask you "how long do you plan on working for us?" when they're giving you their performance evaluation are the red flags you should not overlook where they really don't want you to work with them.

A year ago, they hired someone and had spoken about management to him and taking over from the manager, I tried to have a conversation with my manager and it didn't go well. Now they've hired another and the manager is mentoring him in this position and has not have a conversation with me. This man is being mentored to be my manager and the process does not seem fair. I wish I saw this video early. I was just released from my first tech hr job. I was in training and shadowing for 2 1/2 months. No complaints from anyone. Things were great and then the third month I was “PIP”, the reasons listed were refutable with proof and did not relate to my performance. Since the manager literally followed up and said I was doing good in HR. 2 weeks later I was micromanaged, publicly undermined in email, and blamed by someone I didn’t work with for things that weren’t true. This carried on for the next 4 weeks. Yesterday I was fired “for not making the progress” they wanted. They couldn’t look at me as they talked. I left confused. Almost 5 months in.

It’s a shame that you have to link your mistreatment to an accepted form of discrimination in order for HR to be involved. It should just be “I’m doing a good job, and being bullied and undermined by psychos for no reason, deal with it.” The fact that they don’t care unless a buzzword like discrimination is triggered shows that the only thing they care about is the company image, nothing else. Btw if people want to know the cause of the disastrous lack of productivity in the west which will rapidly lead to our collective demise, it’s not that people are lazy or entitled, it’s that we’ve internally accepted and even promoted the idea of psychopathic behaviour in the working environment, turning it into such a toxic hellscape that the only sane thing to do as a reasonable and self respecting individual is reassess one’s life goals and decide to aim for frugality and freedom through quiet quitting, van life, or early retirement. I think psychos in the workplace are destroying western civilisation, together with their short sighted bosses who promote them. Encouraging dog-eat-dog, psycho behaviours, far from driving up productivity as we’d think, this has actually backfired and now no-one is doing their jobs properly, because doing so gives them no stability, financial reward, company loyalty, promotions or kudos.

I literally asked for more hours and if i could swap a day because i had something to do for graduation requirements. I had the person who i was swapping with and my old boss said okay, so i check later and i see that my days got completely cut to 2 days in a week. This Week & Next Week. I've had enough of this because i was there for months (I'm still in high school) so i decided to just call it quits and focus on school. They had the nerve to hang up on me multiple times when i tried to confront them about this and then they picked up a few hours later. Needless to say I'm happier

He hired a woman to replace me with an tried to belittle me one day by saying that he was surprised that I hadn’t made any mistakes doing the job (which I never had before and never came across as incompetent in any way) so right in front of her I told him to worry more about the 5 employees who chose to be unemployed than to work for him, the whole room was quiet and the new hire looked really awkward…a couple days later I got the phone call. 😂😂😂 I have a better job now and didn’t even need him as a reference. 😉

My employer gave me all the failed projects, but I turned them around, except financially of course because gobs of money had already been spent. On the one project I asked the current PM to keep managing it, while I focused on deliverables. The project reviewer started in to me about how poorly my project was performing financially, I said not my problem, I’m responsible for deliverables only. She was pissed. I got a new job shortly thereafter.

I’m not too sure anymore. Maybe it’s my paranoia playing up but I feel that I should be looking for another job. Team members are leaving and they are not being replaced and we are expected to do the work of thirty people when there are only ten people left. I’ve been there for six and a half years but my face has never fitted in the team. Work is being taken away from me and I’m the only one working in the office so I am getting all kind of requests which is distracting me from my main task. I’ve also been asked to train the new starts but I am still expected to do my own work load and check the new starts work as well. I also have to take calls from the new starts in regards to helping them with a task. I think it’s time for me to look for a new job but the grass is never greener but it’s probably better then where I am.

I am in manufacturing and not an office. I can relate to the "impossible tasks" and the "unnecessary difficulty" as I am being given more and more work and expected to complete it in the same amount of time. A new engineer even commented that I was set up for failure because all the test procedures are not released on line yet. I am supposed to figure everything out and get it done. I build a piece of lab equipment. I build it and put it in the lab for testing. Slowly I have been given the task to do the testing after I build it just to put it in the lab and have them do the same testing. The reason is so I can find all the issues and fix them so the lab gets a perfect product and simply runs through the same testing without failure so the unit will have what they call "first pass quality." It's redundant and since I don't use any of the chemicals and a lot of the testing is done with the same test unit, the results are different and it's like I'm doing the testing for nothing. I feel like they are just doing it to make me quit or to make me fail so I get fired.

A woman I once worked with was forced out of her employer (a large toy manufacturer) and they followed the classic script to get her to leave: it started with a poor performance review, then isolating her by moving her to a cubicle surrounded by packing boxes in a relatively unused area of the office and finally depriving her of meaningful work. They gave her 3 months to find a job at another company so they wouldn’t have to pay her severance. But 3 months later she was still there so she was called into a meeting with an HR rep, her manager and a corporate attorney and told her job was being eliminated and offered her an enhanced severance package which for her to receive it she had to sign away her right to sue the company. I’m so glad I’m retired so I don’t have to deal with this kind of crap anymore.

I had number 5 happen to me before. I was temping so I was fair game anyway. Had to complete 17 tasks each day but I was assigned some tasks that I was not trained not to do. Sacked by the client and escorted off the premises. Not crestfallen about what had happened as I didn't like the job or the people. Went back to the agency who found me another temp job working with nicer people, much better. Sadly they only required my services for a few weeks and I was let go again, albeit on happier circumstances.

Hey get your resume up-to-date. Corporations don't owe you anything, so you are your own employer. Do you do more than expected in your job, are you mentoring others, and asking for feedback? Are you thanking others for helping you finish a task, a report, a collaboration, etc. Always thank others for helping you. It builds trust and they will go out of their way to help you later. Document your work, ask for feedback from your Supervisor and ASK for work. What I did as a Supervisor, (now retired) was preach to my team was the four Cs: Communication, Collaboration, Cooperation, and Coordination. No one can take shots at you if you do these four things and of course, document your work.

What if it's a small office and there is no "HR"? A woman in my office, I've been there 15 years, has decided SHE wants it ALL. She wants everyone but her and her "staff" gone. Problem: my boss of 15 years, isn't well and wants to retire. This woman wants to buy all of his clients and push him completely out. It's all very sad for everyone involved. This woman has no ethics, she has no scruples, she'll back stab anyone who tells her "No." If I quit then I can't collect unemployment. Yeah, it's California. OMG her assistant is THE flying monkey.

I can say that every single point you outlined has been happening to me over the past 7 to 8 months. Not just me, but the only other black person that reports to me. I went to HR, they did nothing. They basically were working with my boss the harasser. They overloaded me with work in hopes that I couldn't meet their ridiculous deadlines, but I did--although it meant I had to work 75 hours a week. Then they told me my position was being eliminated. However, two days before they informed me of that, I filed an official complaint with HR of discrimination. I hired an attorney.

From what it sounds like, they are trying to frame it like you left on your own.. when it sounds like you where fired without actually being fired. But you will need that confirmation from HR because if you were fired, it opens them up to wrongful termination lawsuit if there was something going on. But I would check with the HR department if you can because it doesn’t sound like you were fired.. it sounds like they’re gaslighting you into thinking you were fired.

Bottom line: it's all about cutting costs. Companies nowadays seem to put the burden of more work on the employees who give their all (and make the most $$$) while not telling others who make less $$$ that they should put down their cellphones and learn something. It's like it is being done deliberately to make businesses fail.
