Simply put, focus on a small handful of study materials, practice on topics you don’t know well about on spaced intervals, set goals based on what you can do now, take small breaks often between tasks, and lastly never isolate yourself for long stretches of time. If this video came a few years earlier, I would have saved months of silent pain, insomnia, burnout, anxiety disorders and loneliness. But I’m grateful for these types of videos.

Today, I took part in an interview where my math, verbal reasoning, and personality were put to the test. Interestingly, they prioritize on-the-job training over coding assessments. Their chief concern was my foundational math and communication capabilities, ensuring I'd mesh well with the team. As for preparing, I believe in a laid-back approach the day before any test. I avoid last-minute cramming because there's a limit to what one can absorb at once.

Was scared you were done with software related content. Very very good video. No one really mentions how isolating and grinding alone for long periods of time is detrimental to one's mental health.

This is why I don’t emphasize leetcode when I hire engineers. They memorize implementations and has 0 correlation to real world development. Please spend time learning everyone.

But requirements vary and ppl who work on proprietary software won't have any option. Companies like Amazon won't ask anything for 2 to 3 years experience but others ask a lot of tech stacks in JD.

@@sharathkumar1576that’s because most JD can’t be trusted. So companies find a way to see how their brain works as a JD using these coding puzzles. As a JD can they even answer software architecture questions or design decisions that matter in a certain a situation? I bet not. The more senior roles have harder questions than just these puzzles. People just don’t see it that way because they haven’t been there when the seniors get interviewed and grilled really hard.

Focusing on algorithms or trick questions is not software engineering work. Those who aspire to progress their software engineering career need to learn more than this. Be good at software design patterns, software architecture, doing unit tests correctly (maybe use TDD), etc. it’s decision making at the bigger things that make software engineering an “engineering” endeavour. If you’re just doing trick programming questions, then you’re just a smart programmer, don’t even call yourself an engineer.

1) Distributed practice/ Spaced repetition 2) Forgetting to review your mistakes 3) Deliberate practice - more practice doesn’t equal more success - put effort on your weak points 4) Take regular breaks - rest is important 5) Paradox of choice - more choices doesn’t mean faster results 6) Not setting clear goals - write them down - measurable and achievable 7) Dunning Kruger effect: people with limited competence in a topic overestimate their abilities 8) Don’t isolate yourself - do mock interviews

I paused the video to read through (what I think is) your problem questions and it was a huge reminder of how much I don't know. There were only like 3 questions on there that I could probably answer. I'm clearly not very good at system design lol

I seriously lucked out. Got a job in less than two weeks and the interview comes from a recruiter reaching out rather than me applying

Yeah but what if you are working full time and can't afford to not work your job? It seems like its going to take me years just to be ready to answer the random leetcode style question the interviewer is going to have me solve. Why should some stupid little trick be a barrier for my entry into a job where I won't have to know the trick in the first place. Ridiculous.
