Budget hack: I started saving mayonnaise packs. My coworkers eat out a lot and I asked them to save them for me- they were tossing them out. I put a pretty little basket by the staff fridge with a small thank you sign. I’m using these packs to add to DT tuna packs. I know- too much mayonnaise isn’t good but each pack has a tablespoon of mayonnaise ( that’s not too much), and it adds some bulk to those DT foil packets of tuna. More filling. Helps me enjoy a budget friendly lunch. 🙂

Blessings from Chicago. I'm so blessed to be prepped so I don't have to shop for years, baring a power failure. My freezers are full. I've dehydrated, canned and vacuum sealed for 5 years. I've helped other seniors do the same. Some of their family members mocked them. Now many of those family members are asking for help. Prayers for us all. It is getting rough here just going out. ❤❤

Dried beans can be planted so you can grow a crop. If you know the power will be out, fill your washing machine with water. Use this water for hygiene. Large laundry containers can be used for the same reason.

We bought a grow light, and I took cuttings from my tomato plants, and am hoping I can grow tomatoes over the winter. Tomatoes are self-pollinating, as long as you tap gently when the flowers are in bloom to knock the pollen a little bit. We bought Greek Oregano (the leaves are smaller than Genovese Basil, but the aroma and flavor is more intense), and I’ve moved the plants indoors. Here’s a tip: turn the grow lights on at night-cheaper to run at that time. This is my first year with grow lights, so I hope to have fresh in-house (literally) tomatoes and basil.

We've been growing with lights indoors in the fall through winter and it can work well. I also have one window that is south facing and it gets lot of light even in the winter and the sun warms the window area too. We grow herbs, lettuce and even the micro tomatoes. Anything fresh is very welcome and good for our nutrition.

AG: Good list of tips. A couple of weeks ago I was startled to find out I was terribly low on fishing tackle. Especially lead weights. I was shocked to discover how much lead weights had shot up in price. If there're any fish catchers out there better stock up.

Everybody benefits from preparedness. We do, by having what we want/need if there's a crisis and everybody else also does because they have less competition. Countries would be more resilient if more people prepared and bought essentials in advance. We'd likely have had less inflation as many people would stop buying when prices go up due to shortages or any other reason.

I do as well... enough to last for about 200 flushes. I store it in the basement on a pallet with thin plywood between the layers. If they collapse I also have a small rain catchment system that would need to be purified to make it drinkable but for flushing will be fine.

Milk jugs are not sturdy, and will leak after a few months. I would replace them with sturdier containers soon!

It is unfortunate that some of us live with less-than-optimally-maintained water supplies. We often find out after the fact that certain contaminants were above "acceptable levels"; even when we have no after-warnings water that sits smells awful here.We filter all of our drinking water, but many do not.I have tried to bottle the water here and no matter how sterile my containers, the water gets nasty, if not moldy. I have commercially-bottled water and bought ultra filtration systems for water that I will quickly store.

I do reuse my milk jugs but only for water I am using for non food purposes. They are in my chest freezer to use to help keep my fridge food cool, then when melted, use it for dishes, toilet, hand laundry, water plants, etc.

Milk jugs can not be cleaned well enough to be reused. Use gal water jugs.

@user-oe6wq7pu8d I don't buy water, I buy milk in gallonson sale and divide it up and freeze it.. I then wash them out well enough to fill with water and freeze. I have them for ice blocks if my fridge goes out or to thaw for toilet, or cleaning.

Hi AG, you made a good point about seeds and growing something indoors. Even simple herbs like parsley and basil work well inside in a sunny window or under grow lights and there are even micro tomatoes that are a nice fresh flavor to have in the winter too. I am a long time gardener and I still try to learn something new and like to share ideas and tips with others. Finding now that the seed companies either can't keep up with the new demand for seeds or they just know now that they are in demand and like food, they are raising prices often for smaller quantities of seeds. Being able to share seeds and save your own will be a good tip and skill to have. Always a good point to buy only what you're willing to eat. We are trying to rotate and try anything new so that we're sure if we want to keep buying or stocking it. Like your picture outside in the snow, it's getting to be that time here in Colorado too! Hope Teddy is doing well too.

I was stuck on the road last night for three hours😮 that’s how long it took for emergency towing to change my tire. I’m gonna make sure I have a hydraulic pump so I can change it myself if it happens again.

@@ultramagapatriot5874 earlier I was on my way to work and the tire was low. Gentleman help me out because it wasn’t working correctly. He put too much air in the tire hence that’s why I ended up on the road stuck on the way back two gentleman offered to change it. But I thought I was blessed to make it that far off the freeway having a bad accident. Wanted to wait for professionals..

Lolol i feel you at 72 i changed my first flat a couple weeks ago. Am gonna get a small floor jack to carry. Took me almost 7hrs with a crank jack. Fortunanely was in my remote driveway on sunday so could take some breaks while trying to get it done. And i hav a small car. I also had fixaflat that didnt fix it at all. Apparently ran over some nails the day before. Found 3 in my tire. And no noone would come help.

I bought a air popcorn popper, I was looking at Popcorn, and the best value was at Dollar tree, I bought several bags, and put it in freezer, and then put it in a new clean container from Dollar tree, too.

@@canelareina3795 We keep our bags of popcorn in the refrigerator, I think I heard that there is a little moisture in the kernels and keeping it refrigerated keeps the kernels fresher and they pop better. We only pop ours on the stovetop with a little oil in a pot with a lid too. I think the Jolly Time popcorn at the Dollar Tree does say it is non GMO corn but keep watching labels, some companies change ingredients without notice.

this is how I started prepping,I have also receivd food as gifts from people who don't know I prep.occasionally people will bring small food items to my mosque thinking it will gt used therebut is actually wrong for how wecook coomunity meals so I have been toldto takethem home. I also love to have a wide variety of spices and condimentsin my stash.. next spring I will try a few more different seeds in my little deck garden

Cheap short-term food storage for someone living in a dorm room or renting a room in a house or staying in a motel room and who does not have access to a stove, refrigerator or freezer: packets of flavored instant oatmeal, instant Ramen noodles packaged in plastic bowls or Styrofoam cups, small pop-top/pull-tab cans of corn or other veggies (to add to the Ramen soup), a jar of peanut butter, small size cans of bean dip or cheese dip, pouches or packets of tuna salad/chicken salad/salmon salad, a box of plain saltine crackers (to spread with the bean dip or tuna salad, etc.). Easy beverages include a small jar of instant coffee or a small container of flavored instant coffee drink mix, packets of instant cocoa mix, a pouch of powdered milk, tea bags and a small container of Tang orange flavored instant drink mix. All of these cost less per serving than bottled juice, bottled tea or bottled/canned milky coffee drinks. Shelf stable, inexpensive no-cook desserts include smaller size cans or plastic cups of diced fruit, pudding cups and flavored gelatin cups. Even if the emergency is just three days of being snowed-in or you ran out of grocery money before payday, it is good to have a small stockpile of inexpensive, quick food. Slightly more expensive non-refrigerated foods suitable for feeding just one or two adults who do not have the use of a kitchen include small size cans of beef stew, chili with beans, chunky soups, packets of Melba toast, rice cakes, graham crackers, boxes of flavored crackers (such a Wheat Thins and Cheez-Its), pouches of flavored instant potatoes, packets of instant rice or pasta mixes, snack-size packets of cookies and shelf-stable individually packaged pastries and cakes (such as Little Debbie types), small packets of salted nuts and meat jerky. Some of the whole fresh fruits can last for days without refrigeration and serve just one person, such as bananas, whole apples, whole pears and navel oranges so it is good to be in the habit of always having one or two pieces of fresh fruit in your room providing you eat them before they get too ripe. These fresh fruits cost less per serving than dehydrated fruit snacks. To eat this way, you will need a manual can opener, an electric kettle and a small saucepan along with a hot plate or butane stove to safely boil water indoors to make the Ramen soup and hot beverages and to heat canned soups and stews. You will also want a supply of paper plates, paper bowls, paper napkins, paper towels and kitchen trash bags to make clean-up after a meal or snack easier. It does not take a lot of water to wash one small saucepan, one soup mug, a soup spoon, a fork and a dinner knife (for spreading the peanut butter or cheese dip on crackers), but you could use disposable hot cups and disposable flatware instead of these -- with the exception of the saucepan. If you have use of a microwave and the local power grid is functioning, you do not even need the saucepan or the hot plate or the butane stove. Of course if the local power grid does go down, you will want that butane stove.

Well. Those are great. There was a time I stayed at a mo. Rental small br with small stove, 1 of those like college doirm fries and bathroom w a small shower. 8 mo. It cost in 2008 $800 mo. In 2011 I moved into senior living gated complex in same area. 2br., full size kitchen, lr. 901 Sq ft. It stared at 700+ a mo. Now, 10/23, rent went up for ladt 5 yrs. Especially, since 2020. Last 2 yrs, $75 > yr. I am now paying $1,090. Unbelievable !!!!. This is on SS. NI MORE. THIS TIME , THINGS ARE REVEALING QUICKLY IN CORRUPTION. THOSE WARRING ANGELS ARE HERE ON EARTH, WAITING FOR GOD TO GIVE THE COMMAND. EVIL IN AMERICA AND EARTH WILL BE DESTROYED. BUT, BE PREPARED, AMERICA WILL GO THROUGH MORE THAN THE LAST 31/2 YRS. PRAY FOR AMERICA AND ISRAEL, THE EARTH. GOD IS ALWAYS LISTENING😊

Yesterday I made up spaghetti sauce and hamburger. And put it with spaghetti squash. Reason I did that is it’s a lot easier on my diabetes to have the spaghetti squash than spaghetti. So I’ve now had two meals. And I have two meals in the freezer dryer Along with some other things so I’ll have those two meals that I really like later spaghetti with spaghetti squash any time. And I have been known to take that with me when I have to even stay in a hotel just put some hot water with it because I don’t like eating out so much anymore.

I am learning cold stratification techniques so I can build up perennial food plants and create a food forest. In 2018, something told me to stock up. I had a small budget. So I started limiting my food intake to less than $1 a day. It enabled me to put $2 in extra supplies every week away for the future. I built up an extensive amount of supplies that I rotate through and keep refreshing. I started with cheap pasta from the international aisle. I filled up these sturdy gallon jars from the Dollar Tree.

Thx AG for more great tips. Sprouting seeds is so easy to do and it dramatically increases the nutrient value of the seeds/beans you are sprouting. You can take it a step further and grow micro-greens from seeds almost as easily. Both are awesome no cost ways to multiply and elevate the nutrient density of some of your dry stored emergency food supplies. "You have to adapt." I love sprouts on salads, garnishing home made soups (or canned), in my stir fries, on top of chili canned or homemade, in pork (whatever) fried rice, on a tuna or chicken salad sandwich, in a veggie omelette, etc.

Good hint I got from someone: If you grow potatoes and harvest them, don't wash off the soil on the ones you store. Or keep the stored ones in a container damp soil. They last a lot longer, once harvested.

I managed to stock up pretty good since summer 2019. Now the past yr ,when i use down 2 or 3 items then i replenish those. Its alot easier now, tho i still roll my eyes and shake my head, at how much they cost now. I will buy them long as i can till the cost gets prohivitive. On SS with my big 3.2% raise but then medicare is goin up more. Their COLA is apparently higher than mine?????? I dont get it!!!! Lolol some days like today i think i will starve to death in a house full of foods, that i do like , cause nothing looks good or i dont want to cook. I hav literally 16 granny style bag recipes of cans sitting here to make it easier on those days and i dont want any of them. Absolutely nothing sounds good.

I'm old as mold as well, and sometimes the incentive to cook and make a bunch of dirty dishes just to eat something I'm not in the mood for isn't there. That's the time to reach in the magic hat of time...go back to childhood and make a bowl of tomato soup and a grilled cheese sandwich.

@colorado. Last year's big 8% COLA was gobbled up before my first check was deposited. Rent up 8%, NV Power up 14%, SW Gas up 4.8%. Won't talk about how high food went up, but we're told everything is fine. It's a shame how corporate greed has stepped in. They want us reduced to eating bugs, having nothing & being happy til they dispose of us so-called useless eaters. God bless us all. 🇺🇲

Excellent advice as always AG. 👍 I did my initial stock up by spending an extra £5-6 a week, for 6 months, then re-evaluated, & did 6 months more. AG. You being up a topic that deserves its own segment. How much is enough? I can't see a 3 day reserve as anything but delaying the inevitable. 7 days? Well that would assume we prep for a grid rebound. 3 weeks? Isn't that scary to think the structure will be compromised 3 weeks. This is where I begin to worry. If the grid is down 3 weeks it might as well be down indefinitely. If that is the case, only the fortunate ones will be able to farm and replenish their used stores assuming thugs don't figure out where these people are. And who can farm, guard and protect their stores at the same time?

I got 4 tiny eatable tomatoes a hand ful of strawberries and a few tiny potatoes. 🤗 It’s a good thing you taught me to prep, or I’d be very skinny really soon. 🙃 Your snow looked beautiful 😍and I’m so looking forward to more moose videos. I save mayo jars and parm cheese shakers for things in the freezer. I also keep pop bottles for any dry goods that will fit through a funnel❤

Let me tell you my system , start small 78hr pack of food that doesn’t need cooking, expanding to a week , then start adding easy heat up meals , go for 3O days , by then you should have cooking , start stock piling rice beans caned food of the things that last and you like, don’t forget water , I have 1O cases of water for myself and a emergency Sawyer filter , and coffee filters with bleach , 5 drops per gallon, look it up

Pool shock for water purification works well. If I don’t need it before goes out of date my pool gets shocked.
