I made a spreadsheet of the main things I buy at the grocery store. I have it in sections for condiments, dairy, fruits&vegetables, freezer, etc. I do have a couple of blank spaces so I can add something new to pickup. I keep this hanging on my freezer, and as I use items I mark them on my list, even though I may have backups, so that way next time I go to the store I can replace the items that I used. I don't really do meal planning, but like to have ingredients at home for whatever I may feel like cooking. I do try to incorporate leftovers into other meals, if possible, or I eat for my lunches. And I always watch for items to go on sale and stock up, when I can. Trying to get my husband to build me some new pantry shelves, so I can get things more organized.

Good video! Canned shrimp vanished from the shelves during CV. Two months ago I found it stocked again at Walmart. A few days ago I went tho $tree and the had mylar pouches of imitation crabmeat. I picked up a few and as soon as I got home I regretted not picking up more because the best by date was 2026 so they'll be good until 2027. Pantry seafood chowder 1 can small shrimp drained (1 cup) 1 pouch (1 cup) imitation crab 1 qt shelf stable milk 1 cup cooked (or rehydrated) diced potato 1 stalk or 1\4 cup rehydrated diced celery Salt and black pepper to taste Optional: 1tblsp butter and 1 tblsp flour to thicken. As always, great, clear instructions and common sense, AG! All sorts of reasons may stop me from getting out any moment now, so I am confident with what we have. I'm not crazy about tomato soup but laid in cream of chicken to use with rice,(and canned chicken). I canned my own chicken, (and other meats), but also have a lot of commercially canned chicken, (and other meats.) I go up and down the aisles looking for bargains and to get ideas. I have cut back to once a week. NO ONE is buying rice where I live; I wish they would. I had laid in a lot already. When India was going to stop exporting, I did not have to buy any more to put away. I was just looking today at the bouillon I had ordered on Amazon because it is next to impossible to find it on shelves that do not have MSG, which I am allergic to. It is now TWICE the price it was when I ordered it less than two years ago. I bought it twice and put it away, but I have been using some. Wish I had bought even more. I have all sorts of mix packets, but many of those also have MSG. I look high and low for those who do not have it. Dollar Tree has a VERY NICE spice jar of tomato basil seasoning, by the way.

Hi AG, Here in SE Missouri a 10.75 ounce can of Campbells Tomatoe Soup is $1.26 at Walmart. I believe all of our prices are mostly rising here. 🤔 I use to go into Walmart and fill my entire grocery cart and I’d cash out at about $100-$150. Now if I fill just the child’s seat with groceries, and put paper towels and tp in the basket I have spent more then $150. 😵‍💫 At first I was always shocked by the total and think it was a mistake I’d really check my receipt, only to find I had spent that much. 😳 You’d think I’m just a master stuffer putting too much into the seat area, but I have always done that because I’m short and I REALLY HATE standing on my tip toes trying to reach a can of whatever way down in the bottom of my cart.😣 I don’t shop carelessly anymore. 🙄However I am careful and try to plan ahead like you always teach us. I love being prepared. It feels so good to know that I can throw a meal together, in no time without leaving my house. 🤗 Thanks for always giving us the best lessons. ❤ You’ve helped my family alot. Just a couple of days ago I was chatting with one of my relatives that watches your lessons to and he said he has stored about six months worth of meals for his mom, and himself. 😄

Thank you for your video. Being a prepper I can honestly say that the price has not gone up for me, I'm still eating my 67 cent cans of tomato Soup I bought a while ago on sale and got a couple of cases just because I could. Next it will be the 87 cent stuff I bought. It's next in rotation. Mind you, the price of everything here is gone up 100% or more. I feel sorry for people who are just starting out now on their prepper journey. BUT! Better late than never. My advice? Quit. Quit feeling entitled and then quit every entitlement, the smokes, the booze, eating out, the movies, long drives in the car, the car, unless you're using it to get out of Dodge NOW! If you have a bug out location and you know your are going there, quit paying rent and put every cent into preps. Pay $20 a month on your bills and the computer reads "payment received" and doesn't issue those nasty disconnect notices. You can run forever that way and when they finally do catch up, you negotiate a payment plan, ... and start paying $20 a month again. Funny how it works. That, or everything falls apart and it don't matter anyway. No harm, no foul. They had 680 gram bags of the highest grade Steel Cut Oats in the discount bin and 50% off "too much" was still too much but I got three bags anyway. Chances are, if there's any bags left when I go back, I'll pick them up too. They are a forever food but they take water and 20 minutes or longer to cook. These smaller bags of stuff I pick up are great for topping up the five gallon buckets that still have some space left in them but only for smaller things. A pressure cooker would help in that cooking department, cutting down on both time and water. I've heard of people cooking up large batches at a time and pouring the oatmeal into loaf pans to cool, then cutting slices off it later to fry in bacon grease. I haven't tried it myself, ... yet. But it sounds reasonable. Haven't got the bacon grease? I wouldn't want to be you. Just saying. I took a case of Carrots, Beets, and Salsa out of rotation to be used. Slowly, slowly, ... Now to make three cases of each to replace them with. Thank god for abundance. Things may not be so easy in the future. Keep up the great work and good luck.

Prices are up and down at our store in Ohio. Some meats are up...eggs and milk low. Fruits and veg down.. some packaged items up, some down. Honestly, I've been alive a bit now...this all seems kinda normal to me according to my experience. We are super flexible with our food choices and I always seem to keep on budget. During cvid, we hardly ever bought eggs, too expensive. Now they are fine. Didn't bake bread during that time cuz yeast was $$ and hard to find ..but flour was ok so did lots of quick breads, buscuits, pancakes, crackers, and tortillas. Flexible eating patterns will save a person a ton and help them. Today 9/5/23 my Walmart Great Value tomato soup is .68 cents a can.. I'm southern Ohio.

You've taught and inspired me over the past couple years more than you'll ever know. I love how you brought up tomato soup. Growing up I used to love Campbell's tomato soup but today it's not the same. I finally decided I missed good tomato soup so I made a few pints of tomato soup and hot water bathed it. Now, on some cold snowy day, I can open a jar, add some milk and butter, make a grilled cheese and smile. I've also made some salsa, which makes a great base for a Mexican totilini soup. Thanks granny for all you've done to teach and inspire me. Much love to you and Teddy.

You are so right. Being unprepared for the unexpected just makes it a lot worse when the unexpected happens. It is wise to keep some of the basic food staples, ones that you are used to using, in your pantry just in case something happens that prevents you from getting to the supermarket for a week. Maybe flooding caused the road to town to wash out. Or maybe you had unexpected expenses (vehicle repair, child's ER visit...) and just cannot afford to buy more groceries until you get your next paycheck or Social Security check. If you always keep the basics in your pantry as an emergency back-up, you can still put meals -- made from what you already have -- on the dining table. And most of these basic food staples are dry foods that could be packaged for long-term storage, so if that emergency does not come for a few years, you would not have the added expense of rotating/replacing those basic foods. Dried spaghetti pasta, dried macaroni pasta, white rice, packets of instant Ramen noodles, all-purpose flour, cornmeal, a 5-lb. bag of potatoes, some small bags of dried beans/peas/lentils, bouillon cubes, a quart bottle of cooking oil, a bag or canister of powdered milk and a canister of rolled oats do not cost much for the amount of calories they provide and they are good foods to always have in your pantry just in case you cannot do your usual food shopping trip. And you can use these basic ingredients plus whatever refrigerated, canned or frozen foods you happen to have (meat, poultry, fish, vegetables, fruit, cheese, butter, eggs...) to make some delicious, "made from scratch," frugal meals. For example, for breakfast you could serve oatmeal porridge along with rehydrated powdered milk, some sugar and ground cinnamon and some canned peaches or a jar of applesauce for a fruit topping. Or you could use one raw egg plus some flour, powdered milk and a little sugar from your pantry to make pancake batter and cook the pancakes in a little vegetable oil or butter. Serve with syrup, honey or fruit jam. For lunch or dinner, you could cook soaked dried beans in the slow cooker flavored with bouillon cubes or a ham bone from the freezer. When the beans are tender add dried onion flakes, a can of tomato sauce, some dried culinary herbs and maybe some canned whole kernel or sliced raw carrots and cook a little longer until all the ingredients are tender. Serve with homemade cornbread or homemade Southern biscuits/scones or a fresh loaf of homemade quick bread. Or make a batch of marinara/spaghetti sauce and serve over cooked pasta and top with some grated cheese. Or cook enough white rice that you can serve heated canned meat plus homemade gravy over some of the rice that day and still have enough leftover cooked rice to use the next day to make fried rice. Just stir-fry that chilled, cooked rice in some cooking oil along with some frozen or canned peas and carrots, some canned or minced leftover cooked meat, one beaten raw egg and a little oyster sauce. These are all frugal meals that are easy to learn to prepare and that most people like. Where I live in southern Nevada, all sorts of foods are readily available, and stayed available during the first year of the pandemic, but the cost of all food has gone up and stayed up. Either the package's price is higher or the amount of food in the package has been reduced or both. Fresh salad greens and other fresh vegetables vary a lot in availability and quality from one week to the next, but frozen and canned vegetables have been consistently available to those who can afford the prices. We buy our canned tomato products in multipacks from a wholesale club, so not sure how much the individual cans cost at regular supermarkets. Where we live, if one store does not have an item that week, a different store usually will have it. Our household shops for food at Sam's Club, Costco, Wal-Mart, WinCo, Trader Joe's, a military commissary and Amazon Prime. We can also look for a food item at the Dollar Tree, Von's and Smith's if we cannot find it at one of stores where we usually shop. We have zero loyalty to a particular store or brand. If the price is acceptable and the quality is good, we buy the food wherever we find it on a grocery shopping trip.

Are you a fan of canned corned beef hash? Don't be. Make your own. Fine dice 1 can of corned beef, and 1 can of potatoes. Gently mix. Cook in a lightly oiled non-stick pan on med heat. Press the hash down evenly around the pan. Season however you like. Use a top for the first part of cooking to retain moisture. Be patient to develop a little crust on the hash before turning. After turning, remove the lid and finish cooking. (I toss in diced onions/peppers at the start) This won't save a ton of money (unless you add more potato)…but it is a MUCH better product, more meat, and less fat. I get 3 - 8oz portions from this recipe. Freezes very well.

Yes! Wise advice. People here in The Netherlands frequently have mini fridges instead of full size ones and they like to buy food almost everyday because it's "fresher" or they say they "don't know what they will be in a mood of eating". 🤪 It's very usual to find items portioned in tiny trays that are good for a single meal for one or two people. Stores love to do it, obviously, as people buy superfluous items more often that way and they also don't pay attention to the price per weight but how much it costs to make a single serving instead (making high European prices more palatable). 😬

Here in southeast Mississippi, we had the same problem with no canned shrimp. Plenty of fresh (I'm an hour from the coast) , frozen (a lot from China and other Asian countries, but some also from the coast), but no canned. The store managers said they ordered it but did not get it. Finally, a few months ago, there it was! At a higher price, of course. It was Bumble Bee, but because of the price ( almost $5), I only got 1. They had another brand I'd never tried nor heard of, so I didn't get it. I may try it and see how it is. Product of Indonesia at Walmart. I was just at Winn Dixie and didn't think to look. It wasn't on my list!.

Just watched your video my experience in my nearby grocery store and Frederick Maryland ..28 ounce diced tomatoes and hold tomatoes five for 5 dollar I got 10 cans two separate days and they Messed up ..I had to stand in line twice just to get my money back 5 is five dollars it didn’t seem to compute with anybody in the store I had to go back two separate times for two separate days just for my money back totally Ridiculous maybe they couldn’t believe that the Cans was just 1$ for 28 ounces of 🍅

Agree. Best to prepare as much as possible. Stores may be SWAMPED and folks mte. Be a bit crazed. Best to be safe & secure. Keeps family members safe children/aged. From encountering crazed ppl. Bad weather, flooding, or downed power lines. Stay home or get to safety while traveling home. I found that reorganizing gives a sense of focus of supplies. I'm like...oh I forgot I had that. I've limited space and have a list. Of what else to grab. 👍🧐🤔👋 years back I encountered a lockdown of a snow warning ⚠️. It was early and couldn't think of NOT* having milk. I walked to the store like 2 blocks, but almost fell on the sidewalk. Coming back. I had a infant, in a baby papuse * thing . The storm warning advisory of a lockdown of at least 3 days before roads could be clear and they were right. Just stay put.

@femvetusa5263
@femvetusa5263 10 ай бұрын
Acid type foods will rust the can within a few years depending on humidity in your area. Non acidic foods will easily last for a decade or more.

Check the date, and try to use within that time. Many foods will last longer, but not always.
