ABOUT TJ:
TJ Tollakson is the original Dimond creator and the accomplished CEO of Ruster Sports/ Dimond Bikes. Tollakson began racing in 2001 and quickly proved himself a force to be reckoned with on the bike course. TJ is a proud husband and father to 3 children. You can usually find him pounding the pavement in Des Moines, IA or tinkering with his newest idea at the Dimond Bikes headquarters.
TJ has 10 Ironman podium finishes under his belt, with his favorite being his Mont Tremblant victory. After a bumpy road filled with surgeries and numerous setbacks, TJ used this race to prove he was still at his prime and leads the pack. One of his latest accolades was an IM PR of 8:04:17 at IM Arizona. He retired in 2021 with his last race being Ironman Des Moines 70.3 in his hometown.

Impulse signed up for Indian Wells 70.3 happening in a little over a month. Gathering as much cold water gems of knowledge as I can! Already started my cold showers yesterday!

I am really enjoying your videos. They are so clear and easy to understand. I finally podiumed a full Ironman and qualified for Kona, so I'll be watching a lot more. I have become a fan of cold water swimming. It definitely has a very calming effect on me. I have done Coeur d'Alene at 53 degrees, and Alaskaman, where it dipped to 48 degrees. Your info was really good. Especially, about not going in the water under 60 degrees. That is what the day before is for! I am deciding, today if I will throw my name in the hat for Norseman. LOL. It's on my bucket list. Again, I appreciate your great advice and smooth demeanor. Thanks!

Thanks, Steve! Water below 50 degrees can be very challenging and takes some strong mental fortitude. Hopefully you can race Norseman soon! Thanks for watching.

The two tips I have benefitted from that might be added: 1. Fill your wetsuit up with water before the race, and 2. Pour a bottle of water slowly over your face, prepping the breathing response/pattern.

Great points. Filling your wetsuit with water should be done in cold or warm water just so the suit fits properly. I have never tried a bottle over my face but it makes sense.

I only have cold showers, no ice baths, can this still be enough. Also I bought a thermal shirt to wear under my wetsuit. Will this be good enough?

It will still be helpful. Please remember to test out and practice with your thermal shirt. Sometimes, that shirt can cause restrictions or get super heavy in the water.
