70 YEAR OLD CLASSIC PROPLINER STILL FLYING! KF Aerospace Convair 580 startup, Taxi, and Takeoff.

Always a treat to see these birds at my home airport of Kamloops (CYKA). With the shorter fall and winter days coming, I was especially pleased to grab some close up startup and taxi of this gorgeous bird in daylight. (September 26th, 2023)

I remember one of KFC pilots, Dan Kenny, that man could fly the 580 like nobody's business.

580 was my favorite on old Frontier Airlines. Awesome aircraft. One actually had to fly them.

Frontier had a commuter hop from the airport in Topeka to KCI in the 70s. The convair 580 was often the equipment. I flew over to KCI once by myself. Me and the crew. Weird experience.

I was fortunate enought to fly on an Air Chathams ConVair 580 to Chatham Island, New Zealand eigt times and return. An excellent classic air liner.

These were common for airliners for NY , PA, NJ, & Mass. in the late 50s and 60s. I think I flew the first time on one of these from Newark to Pittsburgh in 1957. Probably Eastern Airlines, but might have been United or American. Might have been the piston version. On return flight, the #2 engine was shut down mid flight, but no noticeable effect, except prop was motionless, lol.

I was attempting to find out if this was a conversion done by Aero Spacelines. During my search, I saw a picture of a DC-3 that had been converted from its original configuration with radial engines to a turbo-prop. I flew as co-pilot with Jack Conroy from Midland, TX to Santa Barbara, CA in that airplane. It was stored in our hangar (where I worked), and as we were pulling it out of the hangar, I asked Mr. Conroy if he was "the" Mr. Conroy. I'd done all of my training past my private at a flight school across for Aero Spacelines, so knew that the owner was Jack Conroy. He then invited me to ride as the co-pilot. That plane was then converted to a three engine turboprop.

Flew on the 580' with Frontier back in the late 60's between Alamogordo, NM and Lincoln, NE with SO's in between those cities..... Albuquerque and Santa Fe. Connected in Denver via Frontier's first 727's.

The turbo prop version is extremely rare; very few were built for numerous reasons. Many of those were later converted back to piston engines. Their reputation for safety, reliability, and profitability with operators was well deserved. It's an exceptional aircraft.

Actually there were over 180 CV-580 conversions alone. Add in the CV-600/640 conversions and that's a pretty successful program.
