I built an electric go-kart about 6 months ago and made a video about it. I always saw these videos on youtube from the 2010s and there were people using dc series-wound motors on go-karts pushing around 50kw. I wanted to do a second version of my electric go-kart with main upgrades being the power, belt drive, front brakes, and just everything is nicer.
This is probably going to be a 4 part series.
I built this on a haase blizzard shifter kart frame

I just wanna say Way to go! This is a very ambitious build! Can't wait to see the next video! 😆 Also, side note and none of my business but please please please be careful with this much wattage. Triple check all of your wires and connections each time you change something. This is enough power to weld with and one stray short can cause serious injury. Can't wait for the next vid, Cheers mate.

Dude, I admire your goals! I’m 55 and when I was a kid my brothers and I would take the motor out of out Ski-Doo TNT 440 snowmobile and put it on our go kart. It was a 2 cycle motor but the speed was insane! The thing is, stopping was a bitch, but not having any suspension made us 2 inches shorter every time we rode it. Hello Kevin, I was wondering how you came up with the HP rating on that motor. I'm not sure if I'm doing this right (I think I am) but I come up with (ohm's law) V x I=P 48V x 300A = 14,400W / 745.7W (which = 1 HP) = 19.31 HP. Getting ready to build an electric bar stool racer and just wanted to make sure I was calculating this correctly, if I'm wrong could you please send me the formula you used so I can check it out and see where I went wrong. Thanks and looks like you have a nice project going on there.
@Kevin.OBrien44
@Kevin.OBrien44 2 жыл бұрын
yup that's exactly correct. If you want to find the real power drawn you would have to monitor the voltage while you draw 300A because the voltage might dip a significant amount. Like for mine it is 85v fully charged but dips to 65-70v under load.

Socks in the garage. I see you too are a man of culture ;) Love the build. I wanted to do a racing kart frame for my build. But after months of looking I couldn't find anything reasonable under $1500. That pulley is pretty balanced for eye-ball weld! Any details on the motor controller you are going to use? What kind of belt system? Looks like 200mm width? Or is that stuff coming up in part 2? ;)

Those seals are U-Cup seals and you can find them somewhat easily in online catalogues that are ok for dot3 or dot4 fluid. Just basic hydraulic seals. I would recomend something like HNBR or Viton with a teflon backup ring. Urethane is good, but if there is ever water in the system, the urethane will absorb the water and break down from the heat.

Idk who told you it was rated for 300 amps but there is no way that motor is rated for 300 amps that thing would fry instantly. Maybe 30 amps tops. The controllers can be rated for over 300amps input power but you'll never get the out of one small motor like that.

How would I test the output of the motor vs to input of the controller? Where I put the clamp meter? because ive put the clamp meter on various wires and measured bursts up to 450 amps and over 200 continuously
