As much as I liked them on SNL, they were just embarrassing that night. They keep doing that awkward bit on every late show and someone needs to tell them it falls flat. Aren't SNL comedians supposed to be good at improv?

Yes right! but the problem is while PARODYING a bad awkward and terribly unfunny moment, the entire bit itself just becomes a bad awkward and terribly unfunny bit. At least some of the audience members did some polite fake laughing.
