76 New Baby

I was student teaching a Health Class,
At the Lab School in Terra Haute,
It was my final semester as an undergrad,
My teaching degree was very close.

But I still had a lot to learn,
Times had changed very fast,
After two years in the Army,
And another two years attending class.

But student teaching borders the real world,
Thinking back six years from that day,
Summing what I knew way back when,
The real world was no longer that way.

The students seemed much younger now,
Than we all were back then,
But they had learned to play along,
With the student teachers assigned to them.

But one day I realized the change went deeper,
As I looked down the first row,
A little girl who never said very much,
Had a new baby in tow.

I looked around and turned my eyes,
To gauge the class take on the situation,
And I was confused and mystified,
When the class had no reaction.

The class as a whole ignored the girl,
As if they had seen it in the past,
It wasn’t surprising to the class at all,
Seeing a new baby in a high school class.
