These bikes are super easy to work on. They were originally intended for beginner riders to experience a safe ride with a good boost of power. I always use original Honda motor oil with every change. 🤠

So far this is what I have purchased - side covers, carb kit, battery, brake hose. About $150. Side covers were a big chunk of that.

I’m in the UK and really enjoy your channel. Recently purchased a CB400A from ‘78 and love it. Currently getting to know the bike and sorting out a few issues. I think you are really on message with these Hondamatics which are quickly becoming valued classics. Keep the videos coming!

I used to find that the brake master cylinder was the point of failure in the front brake from this age of Hondas. Sediment builds up and clogs the outlet and it just gets impacted by the action of the piston. I would recommend testing the master cylinder is actually pushing out fluid before relying on the brake lines to resolve the loss of pressure. I never used to any additives to the oil come flushing time (sometimes would use a turkey baster to squirt diesel through the drail hole to flush out any sediment in the crank cases) but kept the oil change intervals short (1,000 miles) until I had a few under my belt before going to a 3,000 mile normal operating range for further changes. The project is looking great!

That’s a good idea with the turkey baster.

I’ve just purchased a bike that’s been stood for 2 years and it’s 36 years old and I’ve drained the tank and carbs. I put fresh fuel in and it wasn’t running so good so I put a full one shot redex in and it’s running perfectly.

If I ain’t mistaken you can put Sea foam in the oil the Same way as motor medic

Just take it real easy riding around with only a rear brake while you wait for that front brake line. The CB400A doesn't have nearly the engine braking you get from a bike with a manual transmission. She definitely gets most of her stopping power from that front disk. On a different note, the engine sounds really good. As to using engine flush in a motorcycle engine, I've personally never done it. I have done it from time to time in car engines, mainly when I bought used cars and found nasty looking engine oil and no way to know how frequently the prior owner changed oil. Interesting to see there are quite a few of the motorcycle guys on KZfaq running Rotella in their bikes. I've used Seafoam in the past in crankcase oil as an additive and in fuel in one car. I've not really seen anything negative or positive. It was originally made as an oil and fuel treatment for 2-stroke marine engines, hence the name. So, it might be good to use in your two stroke motorcycle engines. Have you ever tried it in one of them?
@motorcyclerewind
@motorcyclerewind 10 ай бұрын
Definitely taking it easy till I get the front brake sorted. When that happens the training wheels are coming off. 😂 I have used sea foam in engines also. This motor flush is cheaper. That was my determining factor.

Could you potentially use an air compressor and air gun on the caliper to push out the piston? I think I have seen someone do that, instead of grease.

I have the same year bike, but regular manual tranny....a few questions for you, Are there any steel braided lines available off the shelf for these bike(is it not worth it versus a new OE one)? Why didn't you just bleed it 1st to attempt to get the feel back, curious(age perhaps)? Please make a video of the brake line swap?lol

Not sure if you'll respond to this but I had a question about the oil you used - Just picked up a 78 Hawk Automatic recently as well and changed the oil + filter (I used the same Shell Rotella T4 15w-40) and am having some white smoke coming out of the only the left side exhaust which wasn't happening before the oil change. Did you have anything like this happen? The Clymer manual calls for 10w-40 which I learned afterwards, so I figured that might be the issue but could also be something else entirely. Let me know if you have any advice, thanks!
@motorcyclerewind
@motorcyclerewind 20 күн бұрын
That’s the same oil I use. Was the oil level low before you drained it? Could have been Smokey before but level went down and it was smoking less. Feel free to email me(motorcyclerewind@gmail.com) your contact info and we can chat about it.

@@motorcyclerewind Oil level looked fine before I drained it. (drained 3 quarts) I'm going to take it around the neighborhood when the weather clears up and see if it continues. Just thought it was odd only smoking from one of the exhaust pipes. I'll send you an email if I can't get it figured out, thanks so much!

Two speed transmission. Have to be in neutral to start. You can shift to 1 then 2 while riding. Or just shift all the way to 2 and don’t shift again until you have to start it again.
