Well done review. Probably the best I have seen so far particularly because you mentioned the lens is optimized for close focus which is something I have also noticed. It can do landscapes as well, however, starting at f/2.8 and stopped down to f/4-f/8 is preferred. One thing that you missed is the lens has field curvature. You mentioned it, however, if you change focus slightly you can also get very good performance in the corners at a minor cost to the center even at very wide apertures (at close distance). So you can put your object in the corner and still have it sharp if you focus correctly. The resolution of this lens is also extremely high.

15:58 Hi Dustin! At these images a lot of the busy-ness is related to the fact that the bokeh balls are being heavily chopped off by the electronic front shutter when using these very wide apertures at very fast speeds. To prevent this you have to disable the electronic front curtain OR switch to silent mode (yep, full silent), OR, less reliably, put an ND filter. This is not fault of the lens. Edit: It's super noticeable at 17:48 too.
@DustinAbbottTWI
@DustinAbbottTWI 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Martin, I went and checked those shots, and yes, one is at 1/3200th and another a 1/8000th. The EFS issue is a pain, for sure, and in some cameras (the a7C), you don't even have the option of disabling it.
@MrtinVarela
@MrtinVarela 3 жыл бұрын
@@DustinAbbottTWI Honestly, sony needs to implement a system that automatically disables the front curtain above certain shutter speeds. I'm a bit appalled they're instead doing the exact opposite and taking away these features (or de-features?). Let's hope it's something that can be patched and they make up their mind. Try testing the silent mode in the meantime, and thank you for your time!

It's worth noting that the lack of focal length in EXIF is a Sony limitation. Nikon, Fuji and Panasonic will all record focal length set, Olympus will allow you to fully name the lens on TruePic VIII and IX bodies and record FL on earlier bodies when set for IBIS.

Thanks for this review. I’m only halfway through but had to pause and stop to ask a question. With what you’re showing and explaining with the aps-c and FF comparison at around 9:20, does this essentially mean that a 0.95 aperture cannot be fully utilised on an aps-c sensor? So that it’s actually misleading in the sense that you would need an aps-h sensor, as you call it, at 1.3 crop factor in order to actually be able let all the light that the lens is capable of into the sensor? I read on another video some guy had compared the 0.95 with the 1.2 and found there to be very little difference in the amounts of light hitting the sensors and how they performed in low-light conditions and as far as bokeh. The real world implications for me would be that I would rather have the 1.2 for some of its qualities (more compact lens, vintage bokeh etc) if most of the difference in aperture goes beyond what an aps-c sensor is physically capable of utilising. Am I making sense? If not, please enlighten me!
@DustinAbbottTWI
@DustinAbbottTWI Жыл бұрын
It's a complicated topic. The physical aperture is F0.95 for light gathering purposes regardless of sensor, but depth of field does change relative to the sensor size. I don't think I've tested their F1.2 lens, so I can neither verify or deny that report.

I keep hearing they share the same optical formula. Unfortunately, I have no evidence this is true. From the sample pictures I have seen they render very similar. The 7artisans is half the price, lighter, and has more aperture blades. I would say try the 7Artisans first and purchase from a retailer with a good return policy if you don't end up liking it.

First of all, a big congratulations for reaching the 100k Dustin! You rock! Keep up the great job as the best and real pro photography reviewer here on YT! Secondly wow what a performance of this cheap Lens, I have to confess when I first heard about this lens just thought Ahhh another hefty 0.95 lens toy! But it seems this time we see something real to enjoy without breaking the bank or back like Mitakon speedmasters! This lens could be a gem for videography specially while you will have a kind of a zoom range in a FF body considering 1.3x clearimage zoom to a 1.5 crop! BTW dn't you want to give yourself a present to celebrate the 100k on YT? Something like a Sony A1!😊 so we can both benefit from a few more megapixels to challenge apsc lenses more and also a real photographer "definitive" review of that high tech camera!

@@DustinAbbottTWI Yes and I bet it's worth it! The readout speed of that sensor plus 50mp is a no brainer itself, also 8k footage with Sony codes are way easier to work on vs R5 as far as I've heard. I know you really dnt need that much speed on yourself photography work but this camera can give you an a7siii addition to your a9+a7riii which in terms of video means a lot, plus having the fast 1/400s flash sync.😊

@@DustinAbbottTWI I found that big lens hood can also solve the issue. But this can be outof box lens to try. If one has to get thirdparty then viltriox offers autofocus and then there are fuji lenses too. So when one goes for 100$ range, it is for more creativity.

In my opinion, the price of this lens should determine the level of testing you should conduct on this lens. You are putting this lens through such Vagiourous Testing(*), I am afraid you will be disappointed in some if not many of the findings of the results in most of the lenses of this price range. This particular lens may be an exception, it holds up very well for such a lens in this price range. * hence making this video too long. If you are testing lenses from Sony, Leica, Zeiss, Voilangder, etc which cost 1000s of dollars then you can conduct an in-depth examination. etc then you unleash the power you can muster.

Yes and no, as if your priority is light gathering an F0.95 aperture is that large regardless of what sensor is behind it. That means you can let in much more light than an F1.4 lens. Faster shutter speeds in lower light conditions might be more of a priority than depth of field for some photographers.
