I love this lens. Although 7Artisans doesn't really state it, this lens is best for cine work. The softness it produces is what we cinematographers look for. In addition, the looseness of the aperture ring is also something I look for. A stiff aperture ring makes the camera shake while changing adjusting the aperture while shooting handheld. Furthermore, the lack of hood con only mean that this lens when presented to cinematographers like myself, will attach a matte box like the Tilta matte box. Just by the fact that this lens has a click less aperture ring tells me that their main focus is for this lens to be used for cine work. For cine work, this is an outstanding lens. Surgical lenses are not the norm for a cine lens. If you notice, creators that select these surgical type lenses end up putting a mist filter on them to achieve a softer look which the 7Artisan gives without the filter.

Bought the Mitakon at a very good deal, love it so much, I sold both my fuji 35mm f/2 and f/1.4. This 7 Artisan shares the same optical design with even more aperture blades, should be very promising. With that price tag, it is a must have in your bag.

A review of superb integrity as always! You almost had me sweatin bullets tho Chris! I spent double the dollars for the mitikon good to know I’m at least getting a sharper image at lower apertures and a little nicer roll off lol. But if I’m a new buyer, folks I would be remiss to suggest anything other than “go with the cheaper option in this case!”. No offence mitikon, you guys built a tank of a lens! I accidentally drop tested that thing, from 7 feet high, not a scratch. Thank god.

Reminder - set focal length in Fuji menu when using IBIS. Bummer on lens hood. Lens cap issue might be solved w/a bit of electrical tape affixed to inside rim of cap. Bonus - depth of field gauge on barrel. Limited DoF might still make the lens good for “flat field” work (e.g., documents). 7Artisans after budget cuts, 10Artisans before😁.

I just received this lens yesterday and pretty much agree with all that you said. My copy also seems to have a mild intermittent "grinding" with the focusing ring. I'm sure it's just a bad copy issue. I also purchased the Pergear 35mm 1.2 to test and compare and in contrast the rings on that have much more resistance, I've yet to accidentally knock the aperture ring. I agree that a MK2 of this lens will have a better resistance so with that, I think I may just stay with the little Pergear for now. f1.2 if really more than enough in most real life situations. I really wanted to love this lens more than I do lol.

I've also tested this lens side by side with Mitakon, Purple fringe is the main problem optically, not only the edge of contrast, the whole field shifted into a magenta/pink of colour tint. The Mitakon version is a much sharper & better lens overall, Laowa is going to release a 33 f0.95 soon, I think that would be a true competitor to the Mitakon version.

@pal2tech: Thanks for this video and also for the link to the focus-peaking video. I've tended to stay away from focus peaking because I would like to have it switch on only when I'm turning the focusing ring. But unless I've missed some obvious X-T4 setting, once the camera is in M mode, focus peaking is displayed in the viewfinder constantly. It becomes pretty distracting. Is there a way to have focus peaking come on _only_ when you're actually turning that ring?

Regarding corner sharpness (or lack of it)... How much was it because of different distance from lens whether straight in front or diagonally? With this narrow depth of field would not exactly be surprised if there's a massive difference, especially when you're trying to take a picture with a lot of detail, but really close by.

I’ve seen so many videos where they check focus in the corners, correct me if I’m wrong, the wider the lens is, the distance from the corners is longer than it is from the center so the focus would be of. With that being said, if you focus on the corners the center of the object will be soft, I know this to be true on ultra wides at F2.0-3.5

I own some cheaper chinese lenses like Viltrox 23mm f1.4 or Meike 35mm f1.7. They have similar design problems, e.g. not clicking and easy going aperture or losing lense cap. For the Meike I bought a separate lense cap for the filter size of the lense. My English is not very good, thanks for your very clear and sufficient slow speach. This helps a lot to follow your interesting presentations.

I opted for this lens than the mitakon ver cos it’s lighter, cheaper and the difference in IQ isn’t that noticeable in my eyes and for the $200 difference this is a no brainer for me being on a budget. I also noticed that mitakon version tends to do cateye bokeh in some situation which I personally don’t like. I bought a cheap $5 jjc metal lens hood for my 7art 35mm and it’s doin fine.

5:41, when shooting against a wall, the distance from the center to sensor is longer than corners to sensor. So the lack of sharpness could be an effect of the F/0.95, no? Not all lenses are flat field, and I doubt cheap ones are.

One point I would like to add about the f 0.95 is that if you are shooting low light somewhat farther away from your subject, focusing is not a big issue. My purpose in getting one of these lenses is for shooting groups of people indoors in low light at say a wedding reception.

Be careful, because 7artisans has indeed 0.95 aperture (geometrically), but max T-stop is very close to Fujinon 35mm 1.4. It will render amazing blurred backgrounds but will give you comparable amount of light as Funinon (minus AF).

I have a few lights and as I have my college during day time coming and drawing at night is kind of relaxing but can't record as my current lens has 2.8 f stop. I am planning to buy one lens that will give me the liberyof shooting some film footage for my job and also those of my artworks during night. so which f stop would be a better option for me a0.95 or a 1.2 or a 1.4. I actually don't have a lot in my pocket and at Max can just buy one lens. So if you can help me a bit would be great. Lots of love from India

I just received mine in the mail and something is rattling very loud inside the lens. Edit- I found out the rear element is spinning freely. The lens appears to still work, but that goes to show the build quality is crap

When I saw the sample photos of the 7Artisans on the net, I immediately noticed the bokeh outlines on the 7Artisans vs my Mitakon which I have used extensively. It can get distracting at times (especially backlit foliage). I think the Mitakon is better in sharpness, the bokeh, and the Mitakon is a little brighter. Is it worth the price difference? Depends on your priorities. I kept my Mitakon. I have sample images in my channel of the Mitakon used on weddings and pre-weddings quite a lot (second only to the Viltrox 23mm). One thing I'd like to add, if you're shooting on very wide apertures, sometimes manual focus is a lot faster as the camera won't be hunting as you are directly controlling where you want to focus. Of course, it'll be really hard if your subject is running or moving erratically but for weddings and portraits where you can predict the direction of the movement, you can be faster.

Greetings Mr. Lee. • A joyous 2021 to you. Thank you for your efforts in making this great mini-review summary of the 7Artisans 35/0.95. • May I ask if you've done a review of the Mitakon 35/0.95? If given a choice, which would you prefer? The 7Artisans or Mitakon edition? As hard as it may seem to lock focus at 0.95, is the Mitakon more manageable in yielding acceptably sharp images (at the center) than the 7Artisans? • Also, Laowa will be releasing its 0.95 edition at 33mm (www.fujirumors.com/laowa-argus-33mm-f-0-95-specifications/). Unfortunately, it's aperture ring is still clickless. Thanks again!

Thank you for this review! I'd mention that this lens looks very much alike Mitakon Speedmaster 35mm f0.95, thugh the front part of the lens is visibly shorter. In all other respect I would think it was Mitakon...

Do you have any kind of rattling in your lens? Mine does and I found out it’s the rear element rattling around. It actually spins freely

All manual lens? F0.95? I'm watching this from behind the sofa. Sounds like hard work! And yeah it does sound like a faff, with those non-clicky rings and the ejecty lens cap (I'd hate that!). Against that, I think your photos where objects are only half in focus have their own beauty. Like you say, it has a place.

Great review! Do you have any thoughts on the 7Artisans 55mm f1.4? Have you reviewed any of their other lenses. Thanks.

I've had mine for a year and a half, and it's a really nice lens. Nice and soft at f/1.4, and very sharp at f/2. The build quality is much better than their 25mm, but not quite as good as their 12mm. Of the three it's definitely my favourite, even if it's hardly a normal focal focal length. Seriously considering this 35mm for that. Note that now there is the even cheaper, brighter and clicked-apertured TTartisan 50mm f/1.2 available though. Got one of those on the way in MFT mount, really looking forward to trying it out. It looks a little weird, but if it's as good as the 55mm optically, it might be the better option.

@@orangorill I was also looking at the TTArtisans 50mm f1.2 but what I’ve seen but I think it’s clickless. I’m ok with that. I have the 7 Artisans 12mm and love it.

@@orangorill you are correct, the TTArtisans 50mm does have a click aperture ring. Tats great news. Now to decide which to get the 7Artisans 55 or the TTArtisans 50???
