7mm-08, kicks like a 6.5 Creedmoor and hits like a 308. Now how sweet is that!
@nickb8618
@nickb8618 3 жыл бұрын
When my gf started hunting she used my Winchester in 308 throwing 165gr seirra game kings. When she decided she wanted her own rifle we got 6.5 creedmor cause she kinda wanted just a smidge less recoil. I hunt with a 7mm wsm and I regretted immediately not talking her into the 7mm-08. 6.5 creedmor is a sweet little shooter but the 7mm-08 is the better option when we decide to hunt elk in the future. It is the happy medium between the 6.5 and the 308

@@nickb8618 yeah the new craze with the 6.5 creedmoor has been caused by the 1000yrd crowd, but within hunting ranges (say under 500yrds) the 7mm-08 does everything better. All for just a hair more recoil, if its even noticeable. Love my 308, but the 7 would be my next choice if i couldnt have it (308)

@@zander5344 from a hunting perspective, by the time the Creedmore is shooting meaningfully flatter than the 7-08, it doesn’t really matter. The Creedmoor (probably both, really) has lost enough energy by then to not be terminally effective on deer-sized game.

I fully agree with you on "ethical hunting distances". Personally I feel 300 yds is getting out there a ways, and 400 is a good max range. Watching most people actually shoot and hunt, an awful large percentage of them are having trouble at 200 yds.

I've handloaded my .280 Rem for 35 years. Using a 160gr Nosler Partition, 53.5gr IMR4350 I've taken Elk, Mulies, Whitetail and one Moose. I come within about 200fps of the magnum with MOA accuracy out to 300 yds. I always tell people when asked about it; "It does everything a .270 will but 10 grains heavier". It shines with handloads. I did use a 175gr for the Moose as I knew I'd only be shooting at under 150yds and it worked perfectly.

I have long been a "big bore" fan. My first hunting rifle was in 30-06. I still have a life long appreciation of it and the 338 Winchester. Maybe it's like never forgetting your first love? Still, the older I get, the more I appreciate the capabilities of the smaller bores. While I have never liked the 7mm Mag (or the 284, 300, or even the 357), I have appreciated other magnums, but in general a "standard" bore holds much more interest for me. I have been pleased with the performance of both the 7x57 and the 7-08 when given the opportunities to shoot them. Lately I've been looking at the older cartridges, most specifically the 6.5x55 Swedish. This video shows me that I need to broaden my viewpoint to include the "standard" 7's. Good video.

Great review. My pop is in his 70s. He asked me a few years back what caliber rifle would I buy for a long range hunting round with low recoil? I told him 7-08. Just hand load some 140 Berger VLDs and be done. You’d thank he found some magical round. LoL!! My pop is a great shot. He just can’t move around very well. So it is hard for us to get close sometimes. We both love to spot and stock. He has taken deer at 700 yards with his 7-08 with ease. I’m thankful I’m able to enjoy life with my dad and wouldn’t change it for anything in the world.

I’m not gonna knock anybody’s ability. Hunting, shooting, or in my dads case just being able to get around. Would I like to get my dad closer? Sure I would. But it’s hard sometimes to get him up a rocky hill and through some deep ravine threw a river. I’ve taken elk in the 900 yard range with my 260 Remington and 140 grain Berger’s. Do I do it all the time? No sir I don’t. My rifle and I can hold a 2” group at 700 yards all day long. Hit a 5” target at 1,000 yards 3 out of 5 times. A 10” target 5 out of 5 at 1,000 yards. I do believe there are people that are looking for that long shot all the time for bragging rights and I will never agree to that. If you don’t respect the animal that you are about to take its life, I don’t thank you should be hunting anyway no mater how far of a shot it is. I have my limits set on the conditions that are around me. If the wind is blowing over 20 mph than I don’t shoot past 700 yards. Now on a target sure, but not on a live animal. Good luck this hunting season everyone. Get your loved ones out and enjoy the outdoors. Meet new people and seek new adventures. God bless!!!

@@Nick-wn1xw sadly , the metric calibers never really grabbed the attention of most people in the USA, until the 7mm Remington Magnum came about . The 7 * 64 Brenneke is essentially the same cartridge as the .280 Remington ( ballistically speaking / and technically a spin off of the 7*64) a very effective and efficient cartridge , and perhaps the best 7mm cartridge ever designed. It is sad that people can’t see the worth in this fine 7mm cartridge, the Americans cling to their .30 calibers and always will . The only other 7mm caliber that gained a lot of popularity was the 7mm-08 , due to its ability to chamber in short action / compact rifles , and its mild recoil , and ample supply of commercial ammo , it has great capabilities, but still cannot match the versatility of the 7*64 / or .280 Remington to be loaded with the heavier 160-175 grain bullets . I love my .280 Remington, it will take care of any business I need it to do , with the exception of the availability of commercially loaded ammo , it has has great potential for anyone who has the resources and knowledge to custom hand load , it is considered the ‘ handloaders dream’ with so many 7mm projectiles to choose from , and today’s powders and primers which are superior to what was available back when these cartridges were first developed, the .280 Remington ( and 7*64 Brenneke) can achieve velocities that knock on the door of the 7mm Rem Mag .

I’ve hunted all over the world and I can’t agree more that the 7 mm 08 is an outstanding cartridge .I also have a 280 Remington that I’ve had it with extensively. I really like that cartridge and it’s my one gun if I can only go anywhere for medium size game. This is a well-thought-out presentation and for the reloader it’s hard to beat the 708. The discussion of long-range shooting for hunting is not hunting most guys can’t find the target if it’s more than 400 yards away after they shoot it and if it doesn’t drop which is usually the case. This is because the energy is out of the bullet by then they’re never gonna find the animal. I’ve seen that happen over and over again. We need more intelligent posts from guys like desert dog I can’t say enough about how much I like this video.

I cut rifling for Proof Research, and I for one am tired of the 7mms being ignored. I go months at a time cutting nothing but 6.5mms, then months at a time cutting nothing but .308s, and the whole time, nobody can tell me what these 6.5s and .308s are doing that the 7mms can't do better. I think the American shooting industry is ignoring the most useful caliber, .284. The .284s have higher BCs than either the .264 or the .308, and so chances are whether it is hunting or long range precision, a 6.5 Creedmoor or a .300 PRC, there is a 7mm cartridge that will do it better. The 7mms do best shooting the bullets of about the same weight as the .308s. Most .308s are using bullets in the 150 to 180 gr range. The 7mms dwell within about the same range, from 140 to 175 gr. The difference is that the 7mm will have a higher sectional density and a higher ballistic coefficient than the .308 caliber projectile of similar mass. In fact, even as you get into heavy weight match bullets, you have to get above 230 gr in .308 to get higher BCs than equivalent heavy weight VLD .284 cals. Consider Hornady, for example. Between the 6.5mm, the 7mm, and the .308, there is only one bullet in the entire lineup that beats the 7mm equivalent and that is the 250 gr Atip. If you compare the factory listed G7 BCs, the highest BC ELDX is for the 6.5 the 143 gr with a BC of .315, for the .284 cal the 175 gr gr with a BC of .347, and for the .308 cal, the 212 gr with a BC of .334. The highest BC ELDM is for the .264 cal the 147 gr with a BC of .351, for the .284 cal the 180 gr with a BC of .401, and for the .308 cal the 225 gr with a BC of .391. For the Atips, the .264 has a 153 gr with a BC of .355, the .284 has a 190 gr with a BC of .422, and the .308 has a 230 gr with a BC of .414 and a 250 gr with a BC of .442. So there isn't a single .264 caliber bullet that can beat an equivalent .284 caliber bullet and there is only one .308 caliber bullet. This is only one manufacture, but it is pretty much the same with Berger, with Nosler, ect. Very few .308 caliber bullets can keep up with the 7mms, and when you operate within the realms of commonly available bullets, the 7mm is shooting about the same mass at about the same caliber, it just arrives downrange faster and with more energy. The higher sectional density of the 7mms means that they penetrate exceptionally well. So you combine more retained velocity and energy downrange with good penetration and you end up with rounds that often punch above their weight, even harder than the .308 caliber rounds they are often compared to. The difference is mass usually isn't much, the 7mms will have more velocity because of their higher BCs, and so will expand better, and better penetration because of their higher SDs. The only thing the 7mms lack compared to the .308s is recoil. The 7mms are the true sweet spot between external ballistics, terminal ballistics, and recoil.

As it often does, this really boils down to short action vs. long action, but as you mentioned, the 280 AI is probably the best 7mm cartridge ever created. Your ballistics are wrong on 7mm-08. You are trying to make it look comparable to the 270. A 140 grain bullet is just under 2800 ft/sec, 150 grain about 2650 ft/sec & 175 grain little over 2500 ft/ sec. It's a very good round up to 350 yards. It can't compete with the 270.

I was wondering when the 270 fan bois were going to show (they constantly troll videos from any cartridge). Like most other youtube channels, I usually just delete them rather than argue, but I will give you an answer since you were the first. FIRSTLY, I never said anything about the 7mm-08 being comparable to the 270; you made that up. Secondly, ANY loader (EVERYONE) can get 2800fps or more from a 150gr bullet easily and safely from the 7mm-08, just like I can easily get 2900fps from a 150gr out of my 270. Every load manual has safe 150gr 2800fps loads for 7mm-08 and safe 2900fps loads for the 270 (I load both, so I understand this). At 300 yards (ethical hunting distance to Jack O'Connor), the difference in drop is 0.50", BUT the 7mm-08 does it with 20% less recoil and way less powder consumption. The 7mm-08 wasn't made to compete with the 270, so stop trying to make it that (270 guys are very insecure). The 7mm-08 was made to be a very soft recoiling round, that is easy to load for, efficient, inherently accurate, fits in a short action, and can ethically kill animals at reasonable hunting distances. Jack O'Connor loved the 7mm-08's twin, the 7x57, just as much as he loves the 270. The only reference I made to the 270 was with the 280, which is indeed a fair comparison.

To be clear, when I referred to the 6.5cm as a "craze", my intention was not to suggest that the caliber would fade away but rather that the focus on it would fade back. There are many old cartridges that have outstanding reputations and are still very relevant. Hornady has advanced the shooting sports by bringing some great new purpose-built cartridges to market; the 6.5 and 6mm Creedmoors being two of them. This is a great thing for shooting as a whole and I applaud Hornady for their innovation, but the shine will fade and the venerable hunting cartridges that we have all owned and loved for generations, like the 7mm-08, will still be there when that happens. Personally, I believe the 7mm is the most versatile bullet diameter there is. I also believe that the 308 case is one of the most forgiving, pressure-tolerant, and ubiquitous cases ever created. Marrying the two to create the 7mm-08 made such perfect sense. It created a platform that was perfect for seasoned hunters and was quite tolerable for both women and youth hunters as well. It is a platform with which the shooter could load light and fast 120gr screamers that were perfect for varminting and predator hunting, or 140gr pills that are perfect for the majority of light-skinned North American big-game, and still have the option to go even heavier with 160gr sledgehammers for bigger game like elk and moose. All those options can be pushed at very respectable and ethical velocities from the 7mm-08 case, especially when handloading with modern components. Versatility is where the 7mm-08 beats everything else. Lots of cartridges can do some of what the 7mm-08 can do, and some may even do a few things a little better, but the 7mm-08 can pretty much do everything really well. So while I do own lots of rifles in other calibers (including two in 6.5cm), if I had to pick one, it would always be a 7mm-08 and it's the cartridge I recommend to anyone buying a first hunting rifle.

I always suggest 7mm-08 any time someone asks what to get for a first time hunter, kids included. I own a few rifles, but I don't have a 6.5 and don't want one! I never bought into the hype and all it is in my opinion was some thing to help sell guns and ammo, wich from a business standpoint is perfectly fine with me, my 7mm-08, .308, 30-06, 7mm rem mag and .300 win mag will do everything I need them to do. Getting off the subject a little bit but in the states that have legalized centerfires such as the .35 whelen to be used in their "Primitive Weapon" season, all that is is a chance for gun companies and retailers to sell a gun and some ammo and scopes etc... perfectly fine with me but I call it what it is. I live in Louisiana and i don't call it "Primitive Weapon" season, I call it "Sell A Gun" season :)!

I have a 7x57 in a Ruger No. 1. I absolutely love this rifle, it's a tack driver and very comfortable to shoot and it is a very handsome rifle. I'm a little older now and I have a fair amount of hunting and shooting experience. My 2 favorite rifles are now the 7x57 and a really sweet Kimber 25-06. I have a nephew who has been an avid bow hunter for several years and now wants to start rifle hunting. He's in North Carolina and has been talking to about what .300 Win Mag he should buy. I have a very nice one that he has seen and that he admires. When I started with the.300 Win Mag I lived in the Pacific North West. There I was hunting elk, mule deer and bears. I now live on the east coast and the .300 is too much gun for this area, for that matter it's too much gun for this side of the Rocky Mountains. Now I did get a lot of use for it out west and in Africa. Back to the 7mm. I made him a deal, I will loan you my 7x57 to hunt with in North Carolina this upcoming season. I'll loan it to you now with ammo so you can spend the next several months getting used to it. If you can kill a "Wall Hanger" buck with the single shot 7x57, and still want a .300 Win Mag,I'll give you mine. Do you think I did the right thing? In my opinion the 7x57 is an absolute perfect round for everything east of the Rockies and most things west of them.

I believe the "Bell" you have mentioned is indeed Walter Matiland Drympold Bell, more commonly known as "Karamoja Bell" because of the region or area that he traditionally hunted. I've read much about him. But that's not why I took up the 7x57. Back in 2004 I went on a plains game safari. I carried a .300 Win Mag. It went smoothly, I took all the game on my package. As I was leaving at the end of 10 days of hunting, my host showed me his rifle... A Malincher 7x57 and he had an amazing trophy room to show.

My vote goes for the .284 it's a rebated case that's volume is close to an 06 case. They are big in F-class matches. With long barrels they can run 180s up near 3000fps. 7-08 up to 7 rem mag seems to be the right zone for the 7mm bullet.

If you draw a line up the middle of Texas and go all the way to Canada, you probably have about 80% of all hunters to the east. In that half of the US, probably 90% of all game are shot at less than 150 yards. In most cases, less than 100 yards. For the eastern half of the US, a 7-08, 6.5 CM, or 308 gets the job done. In many areas the old 30-30 is still king. As soon as you go to the other half of the US, the rules change fast though. Instead of deer being 50-100 yards away, they're 150-400 yards away, and the wind is blowing 20+ mph. There may not be much cover to stalk for closer shots. Many of us are getting older and don't want to low crawl 200 yards through cactus and rattlesnakes either. A 308 with 150gr bullet in a 20 mph crosswind at 250 yards is a bad situation. The wind can blow the bullet 15 inches off course. Then you have a miss or a gut shot. Out west, a high BC bullet with higher velocity is what's needed. A 280AI, 6.5PRC, or 7 rem mag are outstanding for longer shots in the very windy western US. It's important to pick the right cartridge and bullet for the game and situation you're hunting in. It makes no sense to me, to go deer hunting in Louisiana or east Texas with a 300 WM. On that same note, going hunting with a 30-30 in the Texas Panhandle would be a challenge.

You are correct about the .284 being probably the best 7mm cartridge of all time but that Winchester badly screwed things up. I am building a custom hunting rifle using a Borden Ridgeline 'Medium' action that allows the full potential of this cartridge to be realized. This was also the most popular version of the Ultralight Arms Hunting rifles......supreme bench level accuracy, speed, flat shooting, light weight and energy without the recoil. I am hoping with the advent of medium actions for mid-length cartridges by Borden and others for the .284, 6.5x.284, 257 Roberts, 6.5x55 Mauser, 6mm Remington etc. the .284 will make a well deserved comeback as a superior hunting cartridge that it is.....as you mention it was way ahead of it's time and poorly managed. I've shot a ton of deer with my Winchester Model 100 in a .284 but am now will take this to another level with this custom build.

You gave each cartridge it’s credit dues and it’s shortcomings. Anyone new to the 7-mm cartridges listen close to this video. It’s pretty much spot on. With the advent of the new supreme bullets for the hand loader and the great factory ammo a new world has opened for the big 7-mm. That in conjunction with the highly accurate rifles being built. Good bullets in a 1-7 or 1-8 twist make the big 7s do their thing way out there. But that’s all kinda new stuff for the 7s. You nailed every cartridge dead on. Great video. I have shot .270 for nearly 30 years and reload, my pet load is 140 gr sierra game kings and even after 30 years this gives me slightly less than 0.75 moa in a Remington 700, deadly out to at least 340 yds. This is because initially, it was named for the groove diameter (.284) , not the bore diameter (.275). Notice that the 275 rigby, which is the 7x57, was given the bore diameter name. the 308 for instance, is also the groove diameter, rather than the bore diameter. Many cartridges are not named after actual bullet, bore, or groove diameter for several reasons.

Here in the North East where the woods are stupidly thick and the hills and ravines are high and steep and a long shot is under 200 yards the 7mm/08 serves as IMHO, the perfect deer cartridge for the reasons you mentioned. As an old National Match shooter, the most fun I've had on a hunt is when I bring out my M1 Garand in 7mm/08, peering down the irons at lunch or dinner and bringing it home. I especially like the expressions when I tell people that the old battle rifle is a 7mm.

A fine video Sir Desert Dog. I think today is the third time I've watched it. The one advantage the 7x57 Mauser has over the 7mm-08 is that in a standard length action with good hand loads you can seat the bullet farther out to take advantage of the 7x57's larger case capacity. Otherwise they're two peas in a pod.

Actually, you'll find that the 7mm-08 will easily handle really long bullets. The actions were meant to handle heavy 180-190 target loads for the 308.

My first center fire hunting rifle was a Argentine Mauser in 7mm, great gun and got me started. Having said that, I now love the .30 rifles and dont use the 7mm. When I go out of the .30s I go up to a .35 Whelen and IMHO that will take anything in North America...Im 73 now and have been seriously hunting since about 14 or so and cant remember ever taking a shot on a game animal much over 400 yards and most much closer. I suppose if I lived out West it might be different but it is what it is and if it aint broke dont fix it. Great review on the 7mm and I learned something, thanks.

Great reviews when bias is not present. In 4 decades of hunting, the vast majority has been with 7mm cartridges. The .280 for most, 7 mag, .280 Ackley, and ‘08. I agree with you the 7mm-08 is my choice for the best 7mm cartridge for me especially where the majority of my hunting is whitetails in the southeast. Hand loads take the cartridge to another level. Thanks

I have over a dozen rifles from .22 caliber up to .358 and the 7mm has become hands down my favorite caliber. As someone who primarily hunts Deer I consider it the perfect balance. I like my .257 a lot, .264 is also good for deer, .277 is so close to .284 that it is almost negligible. But I feel that the 270 is kind of a one trick pony as are the other lighter calibers. The bullets at the heavy end of the 7mm spectrum to me are more well suited for Elk sized game and yet you still get great performance on critters as big as Elk with minimal recoil. Does it get any better than that? Paul Mauser nailed it over 100 years ago.

I like the 7/08 for most hunting situations here in Texas for deer and hogs. When hunting from box stands with long shots I prefer the 7mag 26 in barrel And high magnification scope. The weight of that rig will tame the recoil and make long shots easier . .

I switched from my 7mm WSM to a 7mm-08 a few years ago. After one season with the 7mm-08, I sold the 7mm WSM. After doing a significant amount of research, I found that the 7mm-08 ballistics are very similar to the 308 w/a noticeable difference in felt recoil over the 308 and my previous 7mm WSM. On the rare occasion I will get to hunt elk or mule deer out west, the 7mm-08 will still perform that function as well.

Always an outstanding video. I agree with Ethical Hunting. Because I feel the average person hunting may shoot up to 150 yards and every once and a while out pass that unless your in the mountains or flat areas. But many people believe they have to be able to shoot a spot on the moon for some reason. I've hunted for years and have taken many deer and hogs but must of my shots are below 120 yards. I have many rifle calibers and the 4 I use most are 243, 270, 308 and 45-70. Meanwhile my 30 06, 7mm mag and 300 win mag are resting in the safe. Thanks again for another great no bull jive video.

Love the 7-08, I had one built in a custom competition rifle. Less recoil and better BC's than the 308s(in bullets suitable for a short action) and better ballistics than the 6.5 creed. 2750 fps with 162 Gr ELD-X. The thing is an absolute pleasure to target shoot all day long and hold its own to well beyond 1km. But going along with what you said, my 308 is what I take more often then not when heading out hunting with 180 class bullets. When I think of a magnum cartridge for hunting I'm going with a 30, or even 338 calibre. Cheers

Thanks for the video I've always underestimate the 7mm calibers, now I can see that there are some serious cartridge in the 7mm family. I would also love to see a 30 Cal complete review as I am a 300wsm shooter. My belief is that a 30 Cal is a better hunting cartridge for big game (big wild boar and elk deer). But I must concede that some 7mm shoot flatter and has less recoil than some popular 30 Cal. Thanks again for those great videos.

In a multinational Scandinavian Moose-Hunting Survey across Norway, Sweden, and Finland, they studied all the calibers used to see if there were noticeable differences. They had over 14,000 samples to evaluate, using animal distance traveled after the shot as the metric. Out of all cartridges, the .458 Win Mag and .45-70 had the best performance, but were the smallest sample sizes. The .30 bores had the longest travel distances, and accounted for 50% of all bore diameters. The 6.5mm and 7mm bores had the next-shortest distances to the .45s. All animals were obviously killed, but why do the 6.5s and 7mms do better? Less recoil allows more consistent and precise shot placement, and doesn't dislodge optics as much. You can get more shots in a practice session with a 6.5x54M-S, 6.5x55 Mauser, or 7x57 Mauser than you can with a .30-06 or .300 Win Mag. As you gain experience through practice, your chances of putting a bullet through the vital zone increases. You also will encounter internal scope damage and base/rings coming loose less often, especially with the lower-chamber pressures.

Thanks for your comments on ""ethical hunting" distances. I couldn't agree more. As a former guide and packer, I saw way too many instances of hunters shooting at anything they could see, just because they had the latest super boomer magnum rifle. If they animal did not go down, immediately, they didn't even bother to go check for blood. Just sickened me, wish companies would quit marketing "long range rifles". Learn to stalk, for god's sake.

True. We also have .375HH guys hunting elks and surprisingly they usually have more than one hole at the animal even they so much talk about how good the caliber is as it have tons of power and big bullet. Then .308win or 6.5x55se guys have only one hole. It's not about caliber it's about shot placement and good bullet choice. Too big cartridge gives bad shooter too much confidence.

@@desertdogoutdoors1113 Good to know. A lot of people seem to regularly emphasize the long range shots @ 350+ yards out west. They tend to make the case for a 270 or 7mm mag or a similarly "extra flat" shooting cartridge. Looks like I don't need to upgrade then, which is great.

I'm in agreement that the 7-08 is the all around best 7mm at ethical distances. I live in Oregon where we have a forrested jungle on the west side and the rest is high open desert. The 7-08 is perfect for the "wet" side up to Roosevelt Elk, but on the dry east side I prefer my 280 AI for elk hunting where longer shots are the rule (still ethical distances) and I want more authority to go along with the flatter shooting. Hammers rule!
