This saw is around 17 years old and gets used daily for cutting metal and plastic stock to make parts for the business. The saw has been getting noisier over the last few years and the last month, that noise became unbearable. Of course this all had to happen in the week between Christmas and New Year. Finding parts and getting them in-house was a PITA!
Harbor Freight had no parts available for this model saw that was discontinued so 10-15 years ago. Their new model saw is nearly identical, having a few new guards, safety features and paint scheme. However, they have no cross references for parts.
In this video, we'll be reassembling the gear box with new bearings on the worm shaft. Also cleaned all the sludge out of the gear box off camera while the gears were out of the box, highly recommended. End result was eliminating all the horrible noise and getting rid of a lot of backlash in the gears.
I think the root cause of this problem was an assembly error at the factory. I suspect the set screw may have broken during installation. That made it feel tight but the bottom of the screw didn't hold the spacer in place properly. Over time, the thrust force from the worm pushed the shaft and bearings out of the housing. You can see where the spacer has a gouge worn in it where the set screw was. With the upper bearing loose, the bottom bearing had to do all the work. Over time, it wore out and started making noise. Now reassembled with a high quality set screw and new FAG bearing from Germany, this thing should be good for many more years.

Luckily Grizzly has an identical saw and their updated parts ordering page is excellent.

You can look up the bearing p/n on their site or simply measure the ID, OD and thickness.

Good info, I've had 6 of these bandsaws in my business over the last 20 years, currently have two and shredded both gearboxes on the same day! A bearing in one (same bearing as you), the brass gear in the other. They are slightly different models, the brass gear is the same but faces opposite direction in the "Red Bandsaw" (harbor freight) gearbox.

Is the red one the 4" x 6" model? I have the green version of that saw, about 25 years old, and it's still on the original gears. I did pick up a new gear set for the big saw and it's all steel.

@@The4Crawler No, for a while they sold a red 7x12, it was a little cheaper with smaller bearings, smaller motor, and aluminum gearbox. Runs just as great as the green 7x12 honesty though, I've run an insane amount of material through them both.

@@natemccann8050 I guess I've never run across one of those models then. I started with a green 4x6 and then moved up to the green 7x12.

Good video. I have the smaller CM 4x6 that dates back to 1983 and it works great. I wish the new ones were built with the 1/2" thick steel bearing adj arms and solid steel bearing carriage. The cast frame is much better on the older units and seems to be thicker.

I also have a 1999 model CM4x6 saw, it's still going strong. I use it as a vertical band saw now.

Now if they only made equipment like they did back then all would be great.

Yes, so true. At least this machine uses standard bearings, so easy to look up the ABEC number, or the bearing number is also in the parts diagram in the manual. Only thing they don't show is how to disassemble and reassemble this machine, but luckily there are a few YT videos showing some of the steps. Hopefully this video will fill in some of the rest. The saw is cutting so well now, smooth and silent. I guess these parts had been slowly failing for the last few years that I didn't notice the increasing noise day to day.

Looks pretty similar to the Central Machinery / Grizzly saw. If you can find a parts manual on-line, look up the exploded parts diagram and p/n there and compare it to the one on the Grizzly site and if they look similar, they probably are.
