Between that and soaking my nails (which always resulted in my polish chipping due to water-swollen nails shrinking), I stopped going to salons 5 years ago. And guess what? My polish lasts longer!

@@SCSilk I find that difficult myself - cuticle care is so much easier when you've soaked your hands (and my cuticles need it!) but nail care is so much worse. My solution was to do the two parts on different days, but obviously that's not an option for a nail salon - imagine if your manicurist said "I've fixed up your cuticles, come back tomorrow and I'll actually paint your nails."

Because a lot of ppl working at the cheap salons most ppl go to don't have any training or a license. You will notice a big difference if you get a manicure in a nice hotel or at the spa.

I can see you're influenced by Ana from Bliss Kiss who does great nail care articles, who in turn is influenced by the great Scientist Doug Schoon, who should be recommended reading for anyone into nail care.

+Oyku Pul yup :) you can be a nail tech and still helplessly addicted to minecraft ;) although I only recently retrained & qualified as a nail tech after becoming disabled and needing a less physical job I could do working from home. Originally I trained as a farrier (blacksmith) back in 1997, then I was a professional competition groom, stud manager, riding instructor and finally examiner / NVQ assessor in horse care & management, so I got into nail art only in the past few years, as most of my life my nails were too broken to bother with.

They cut and pull on your skin and cuticles too. I was watching the video Cristine made to show how to file your nails and she said you shouldn't file them on a seesaw motion and that's what the people at the nail salon do!!!

3:10 I think the reason for me personally why I trust you more than a nail tech is because you don't like to "lie" (like when you screw up and you're not afraid to hide it) so I know I can trust you and I know that you're not lying because you have no reason to (such as making sales or making something deceivingly simple on purpose).

9th of may 2020-- I was an optician for several yrs. As I was the most patient employee and the worst salesman, I was always drafted to teach the newbies how to put in/take out contact lenses. No joke i taught one lady to put her cL on her knuckle to insert it because she had 1.5 inch long nails...shoo!! We got equally creative on how to remove them--Lol...thx for brightening this gloomy time

This video is really old but I wanted to share a tiny bit of wisdom with y'all that I learned the hard way. When Cristine says "don't leave the cuticle remover on your skin", she's right! I thought it just dissolved cuticle skin, so no big deal. I was using the "slow" (3-9 minutes?) version of the Sally Hansen stuff. I think I left it on 15 minutes. BOY did I regret it. I polished my nails after that and a week later, noticed that my nail lines looked a little rough & ragged. Thought nothing of it and polished them again. Another week goes by and when I take off my polish, this time I've got huge white patches on the edges of most of my nails. They had lifted. I went to a dermatologist, who gave me some fungus stuff just in case, but this ish had to grow out, there was no curing it. (A friend who went to beauty school confirmed that cuticle remover can do that kind of nail damage.) Took six months to get better. I'll never use cuticle remover again, or if I do, I'll do one nail at a time and clean it off immediately. :{

I really love this video. It's super helpful info, and fun too. I keep going back to this and upping my game. My at home mani's are getting better and better. Don't know if I can ever get that close to the cuticle without touching it. Really difficult, I just keep practicing, and the peel off base coat makes it easier to practice!

Holy crap, I used to get so frustrated painting my nails. My polish would chip in a matter of hours. I was inspired by these videos and bought some polishes from ILNP, including Cityscape which is a beautiful black shade with holo glitter, and top/base coat. After using some of these techniques my polish looked great for 9 days. Not quite 2 weeks but still awesome.

I have been following these tips and tricks for a few months. Used to be I could never get nail polish to last longer than 24 hours. Now they last a week until I have to clean the house, but by then I'm bored and ready to have a new colour so it's perfect. Also good quality top and base coat help so much!

I can't even imagine nail polish lasting a week let alone 13 days!! I used to wear it allllll the time and it would chip after 2 days! That's why I started using gel and nail wraps! But I kept watching your nail art and a bunch on instagram and it looked so fun that I made my own braided nail polish stickers and sealed them with a gel base and top coat! I use the same prep technique and I also leave space so that the gels and wraps don't touch the skin, so maybey that was my problem with nail polish all along! I used to get it all over my skin, I could not paint my nails nicely (and it would wash off my skin after a few hand washes anyways). Wow!! This is such awesome information Christine, i can't wait to try a few nail art ideas with nail polish! :)

You don't paint under the nails. If you go to a nail tech(like myself lol) they'll seal the free edge and you won't notice it.

i just ordered some black holo witch and the quick dry glossy taco and base coat in the description and my manis have only ever lasted 3 days until they were unbearable so I'm so excited to have my manis last a week, and they're also my first ever indie polishes! edit: its now 3 weeks last and WOW those last so long! thanks for convincing me to get indie polishes! i will be purchasing munch the cat, unt peel off base coat and a few more holos. I'm also going to try doing some nail art! thanks cristine!

Some people doesn’t have a cuticle, just like my friend, or some of them have a cuticle but they were really small that you can’t see it, if you really have no cuticle, when you push down your cuticle, it will not feel like it stick from your nail

So, I have to thank you Cristine. Apparently my hubby has been passively looking over my shoulder while I watch your videos and finally understood why I protect my nails. Before dinner this week, I opened the lid of a container of parmesan cheese, he grabbed the container to pull off the plastic covering seal because he didn't want me to pop a nail off. Then today while we were at the pool with friends, twice he was like " don't push that button on the umbrella with your wet nail, get so-and-so to push it" and " you don't have a spoon, gimme that pop top can to open it." I over-hear him telling a guy friend "The nail stuff is real, she just bought a cart to hold her equipment for easy access. And she showed me this video about all the things you have to do to keep from breaking your nails and stuff." I listen to the videos on closed caption, earbuds, never bother him with my KZfaq past time. So he has definitely been sneaking peeks.

Christine, my nails are so short (because I bite them...shun me 😂) but I started trying to not bite my nails. I either paint my real nails and not bite them or I put on fake nails and don't bite them (obviously). I was wearing a beautiful silver scattered holo polish on the 23rd, and I still had a few presents to wrap. I naturally began peeling the price sticker off of a pack of highlighters and it lifted the polish from the ENTIRE nail. That was the end of that mani.
