I believe is very the oposite of what "rock tunning" usually is. Loose bottom on toms and high tension on top heads for the high pitch. Having coated heads helps on the more "muffled" warm sound. Of course it will depend on general taste.

There are so many iconic bebop phrases…it makes me think there should be a comprehensive book or manual of some sort of these popular phrases. Your knowledge of the style as well as the way you approach teaching this stuff makes me think you could do this pretty well. I know I would personally love this kind of tool for my practicing.

1:40 “The foundation of most modern drumming is bebop”- I finally took the plunge in practicing bebop - Riley’s book was very lonely on the bookshelf, you kept popping up in my feed, and I was tired of sounding like a rock drummer playing jazz (and a bit bored playing rock). A few weeks in everything started to make sense and my funk chops and rock chops (and my sense of time in general) took a massive leap forward thanks to the bebop practice! I want to let you know that I really enjoy and appreciate what you’re doing. Thanks, man!

Craig! That is an amazing comment for me to read. That is exactly why I make these videos. I'm so glad my lessons have helped you. Jazz, rock, funk, blue grass, a groove is a groove and the drums are drums. The more approaches, techniques and styles we learn, the better. Cheers!

Great video. Among my many old drum tutor books, I have a book of Max Roach solos. It was only when I tracked down recordings of him playing some of the patterns that I realised what was 'meant' by the notation. Of course, 10 drummers will interpret and play the same notation in 10 subtly different ways. This taught me that 'feel' cannot always be adequately notated and has to be learned and developed through experience - from playing, listening, copying and a degree of analysis.

@@drumqtips Noticed a typo on the PDF, phrase 2, second measure, fourth beat, should be a quarter note rest? Loving the lesson, I just keep smiling when I play through it, sounds so badass.🤩

Q. Thanks for the lesson. I've been playing bebop for decades and still run out of ideas. Hopefully using some of these basic phrases when I feel I'm getting stuck will help me keep the ball rolling. And thanks for the downloads page!

Beautiful fills. I used to practice Jim Blakley's Syncopated Rolls book, but your video gets right to the point. Much better to hear it being played live.
