I thought I was in the minority because I like the prequels as well, thought I was crazy about hayden christensen as anakin, I thought they could've found someone better. my favorites will always be the podracing scene in Ep I, Yoda vs Duku lightsaber, and yoda vs palpatine lightsaber.

He didn't even plan that Vader will be Luke's father and that Leia is his twin when he first created the story. Plus, a lot of his ideas were rejected and changed by people who were working with him in the originals (for the better mostly). In his own words, he wrote some scenes to the prequels while on his way to shoot them. Lucas is great at world-building, but don't act like he had some master plan behind all this. He didn't.

Lucas is good world builder but he sucks at writer and director. Just look how bad prequels that were all him are and how good Empire Strikes Back is that didn't have him much involved. Damian Howard You'll actually find there are millions and millions of us fans like me. The prequel hate is coming from people who had expectations for TPM and what it would be like, were 'betrayed' that it was aimed for children once more and went in a different direction. Just cynical oldsters or hypetrain youngsters. The irony that 40 year old men wanting their childhood back are getting annoyed that star wars was aimed for children and not them as adults is beyond funny.

Damian Howard I disagree: I want to like the prequels, but every time I watch them, I can't help but tell myself they're bad movies, with unrealistic characters. I mean, EVERY TIME!! The Jedi are supposed to be awesome, but they're just stupid, they totally deserve what happens to them. What I like about them is how Palpatine rises to power, that is really interesting! I think the Clone Wars animated series is really good, Anakin is actually a great character in them, not an idiot like in ROTS.
@adreanlinerusher
@adreanlinerusher 7 жыл бұрын
I don't think people disliked the prequels as much as they hated some of the characters and the under use of some of the better ones. I think Greivious, Duku, and Maul should have had more scenes. Less Jar Jar and more Maul, More Grivious, Cad Bane, Clones, less dialouge. Not having Plo Koon, Shak TI, and Kit Fisto done right was down right egregious. They would have been epic characters and when they were killed off in order 66 it would have done real justice to the backstory of the great collapse of the Jedi Order instead of just Mace Windo taking center stage only. Then Jengo Fett was just a short scene in the 2nd and didn't do much, I could go on about the LACK of character development but it was slightly better than Rey "yikes". I fully expect Disney to butcher the last jedi... the force awakens into one indiviual that is just learning how to use the force and then there is only one last Jedi... freaking yikes. There has been an awakening to me would be like 20 jedi's and new sith all vying for power "maybe not under the traditional sith jedi name "also would have added some carbon type freezing of ancient sith or possibly entrapped jedi, how cool would it be to have Revan back or Malgus vying for power with darth plauges if that is whom snoke turns out to be.

They really aren't amazing... They're not as bad as people have been screaming for years, Revenge of the Sith is pretty good and Phantom Menace is decent, but they're still sloppy, way too exposition-filled and create a shit-ton of plot holes in the overall universe. Also, a lot of the time, just plain boring in some scenes. Just because they aren't shit, doesn't mean that they're amazing.

Philip Hawkins Technically, yes, but people tend to use the word "decades" colloquially to mean "several decades". Filming started on The Phantom Menace in the summer of 1997, so right now, in 2018, that was technically "decades ago". But unless you're, let's say, 12, you probably wouldn't say, "The Phantom Menace was filmed decades ago." Being age 12 in 2018 conceivably would make it feel like Episode I was filmed by dinosaurs, but most people would probably associate the term "decades ago" with the filming of the Original Trilogy, rather than The Phantom Menace.

Not a liar, nor bullshit... Having grown up with the original trilogy, the knowledge of Vader falling into a volcano during a fight with Kenobi was widely known among die-hard fans of the saga. This was possibly part of the success of the saga - there were nuggets of info about a backstory that allowed a seven-year-old's imagination to really engage and run riot. The knowledge that there was more to this story than we had seen was pure magic. I am not sure of exactly when I became aware of this part of Vader's creation, other than that I was a child when I did. It was probably from reading about something Mr. Lucas said in an interview. Probably in "Star Wars weekly." How many people posting here remember that?

I haven't even watched the video yet, but I'm just going to throw out the Palpatine/Mace Windu/Anakin moment in Revenge of the Sith. Its a perfect contrast and extraordinary moment when you realize that this is the same moment that Luke has in front of Emperor Palpatine on the Death Star. Sidious, the Sith Lord whos expertise is being manipulative enough to bring down the Republic and establish himself as the leader of the new empire, and take advantage of Anakins downfalls in order to bring to pass a new age of Sith. Anakin is standing front of Palpatine and Mace Windu, and Palpatine is trying to convince him to protect Palpatine in order to pursue his prevention of Padme's death. Luke is standing over the defeated Darth Vader while Palpatine is no the side convincing Luke to kill Vader and take his place as ruler of the Empire. We see here that these ultimate last decisions are what bring about the age of Jedi or the age of Sith. It is obvious here that Lucas planned on these two contasting moments/decisions for both Anakin and Luke to decide and give us a clear emotional moment to give light on why it is that Vader fell to the Dark Side and Luke didn't. George Lucas may have not done too well on executing the prequels, but he sure as hell had a vision for what he created, the prequels are much greater than they are given credit for.
@Palendrome
@Palendrome 6 жыл бұрын
Hunter N That's true, but even more poignant is how when Vader is watching Luke being killed by Palpatine, you can almost imagine Anakin flashing back to when he made the wrong choice watching Mace Windu die. He wasn't going to make that choice again.

palpatine's plan to convert luke was ridiculous. luke CLEARLY showed feelings for his father, and obviously hated palpatine and the empire. luke would have to be OUT OF HIS MIND to kill his father and take his place as the servant (yes, "servant" was the term palpatine used in front of luke) of his friends' murderer (palpatine said that all his friends would be killed).

The prequels are amazing. They helped flesh out the series and connected well with the original trilogy. People are slowly realizing that people enjoy the prequels. In fact most of the world liked them when they came out, but the small minority of people that were vocal about their dissatisfaction of them, made it seem that hardly anyone liked them. This wasn't the case at all.

I never had issue with the Midichlorians I always thought they were simply microscopic lifeforms that allowed living beings to access the Force directly. I never understood why people were so outraged at it because it doesn't demystify the Force it only explained one tiny thing about how it works in a more scientific way. Hopefully the knowledge of this idea having been around since the inception of Star Wars will get all those people still whining about it to stfu.

If you're able to "read Midichlorians" the way young Obi-Wan managed to of young Anakin Skywalker, that would mean that both the Jedi and Sith would be able to track specifically who was a force user. And not just have to "feel" it. Therefore making no sense that Palpatine could have lasted as long as he did without being discovered towards the end of Episode III, and only after he had revealed himself to Anakin. Or tracking down anyone who could potentially challenge the Empire (after Order 66) if they were trained, for having high Midichlorian counts. The issue is in the storyline and how Midicholorians, as explained in the prequels, would have played a role in the story but, apparently, did not. So it's very presence in canon is kind of useless. No surprise since you don't ever hear about Midicholorians ever again after Episode I.

I liked the prequels; I think they get a lot of unnecessary hate. But Episode 1 always annoyed me that George chose such a young age for Anakins starting point. In Ep 4, Obi Wan tells Luke when I first met your father, he was already a great pilot, and I was amazed at how strong the force was with him. I just wish we could’ve seen Hayden from Ep 1. No need to make him like, 9. He should’ve been 19-20 when Obi Wan met him.

Siren Song Well, Obi-Wan's words aren't really a lie. When Ani got himself drawn into the battle of Naboo, he had NEVER piloted a starfighter before, not even in a simulator. And what does he do? He saves the day with unbelievable ease. So technically, he indeed was the best pilot before everyone, himself included, knew it. I do agree about the age, though.

TCK No amount of George’s reasoning can convince me it was a wise move to show the protagonist as a cheesy child like that. I mean. We could have seen Luke as a young boy too to learn more of his motivations and history, but they didn’t do that and Thank God. I hate the child spin on Ep 1

5:19 I've always assumed (based on Luke's reference to an Imperial Academy) that the clones were created solely to jump start the army and were quietly retired in favor of recruits by Episode IV. After the Clone Wars, the Empire put an Uncle Sam "We Want You" style of campaign, using the remaining Seperatists (and later the formation of the Rebel Alliance) as a cause to rally volunteers into the Imperial Army.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I seem to remember a scene in EMPIRE STRIKES BACK where Han, Leia, Lando and Chewie, the latter of whom had a split in half C3-P0 on his back in a pouch of some kind were fleeing the Storm troppers and Boba Fett had Chewbacca and 3P0 dead to rights and Vader knocked Boba Fett's gun up and fired into the ceiling, totally ruining Fett's shot. I seem to remember that vividly and, yet, upon revisiting the film not long ago, that scene no longer appears. Maybe I just imagined it? Does that scene I describe ring a bell for anyone else?

What I like most about ‘Rogue One: A Star Wars Story’ is that it’s faithful to the ‘limited technology’ and older clothing styles that were around at 0 BBY, unlike Episodes 1, 2, & 3 that depict the Star Wars Universe being somehow “more technologically advanced” than it was decades before Episodes 4 to 6. To me, watching the prequel trilogy was like seeing a film about Jesse James and his outlaw gang using radios and M-16s to pull off bank robberies in the 1870s. The prequel films’ technology was ‘too advanced’ and these films lacked the ‘gritty, simplicity’ of the original three films (Episodes 4 to 6). What made ‘A New Hope’ such a great sci-fi film was the way that Tatooine was depicted as a planet with a hostile terrain, populated by blue-collar, unrefined, beings. In spite of being an Outer Rim Planet, that was of not of particular interest to either the Galactic Republic or the Empire, Tatooine had the most ‘noble’ beings in the universe the and the most ‘treacherous.’ ‘Rogue One’ was ‘as faithful’ to its progenitor ‘A New Hope’ as it could be, showing the Star Wars Universe at 0 BBY being parallel to ‘our Universe’ in 1977.

Ugh, I once sat and listened to one of those supposed adults go on and on about how George Lucas ruined his childhood. I mean, I love Star Wars as much as anyone -- it truly was an integral part of my childhood, and I still keep up with it today at frenzied levels -- but I've never thought that any disappointments in this series altered the way I saw the original movies (or the first of the Expanded Universe novels). This whole "ruined my childhood" thing seems pretty damned juvenile in and of itself, personally. Do you really give other people that much power and influence over you?

Original? AT-AT like tanks moving across a white plain to destroy underpowered rebels, an old teacher of the Force from the past teaching a new Force user, and an emperor throne room seen... that's original? Besides this, there is also a lot of humor that isn't very Star Wars and will just date the film (badly), and political messages and virtue signaling that has no place in this series. Also, they don't know how space works (gravity, no decompression, ect.). The film looks great, and there is some good choreography in the fights, but it just overall failed for me. Originality is always something to go for, but you can't ignore logic for it to work, and in a series as big as Star Wars, you have to make sure everything fits together in a way that makes sense with what came before it (mostly), which this new trilogy hasn't been doing very well. But hey, what do I know, only having grown up with Star Wars for the 17 years I have been alive. (If you like the movie, that's fine, just know there is some legitimate criticism toward the movie.)

I've liked the prequels since I first saw them in theaters, and I still do to this day. No matter how much I like them, I have to admit that Episode I suffered from pacing issues and long, drawn out conversations about negotiations. I understand it was necessary, but it didn't need to feel like an exposition dump. Episode II suffered from the fact that they had to put Anakin and Padme together even though Hayden Christensen and Natalie Portman have no on-screen chemistry. I loved Episode III and was only saddened by General Grievous being used so briefly.

The main thing we need to understand is that if some of those facts weren't mentioned in the original trilogy, maybe they weren't that important or needed at all and that's why they weren't mentioned. My point is that, for example, deleted scenes aren't only deleted to make hype around them or because of a time limit, some of them could break the whole atmosphere of the movie, although they are made by the same film crew.

That last one, I think, was always my sentiment. Yes, Midichlorians somewhat rationalize access to the force, but the force itself is never explained. It's a one step remove, nothing more, from the question of what the force is. (I actually thought it was clever. We have organelles in our cells called Mitochondria that are essential for our accessing energy in the universe- from our food at least!)
@morsecode980

Ik this comment is old and if you learned about this already by now then I digress but regardless; George Lucas planned to explain exactly that in his Sequel Trilogy. The Force itself was gonna be a bunch of microscopic entities called “the Whills.” They were supposed to be sentient beings that controlled everything and created the Star Wars universe, and the midichlorians acted as conduits to connect to them
@jaeusa160
@jaeusa160 7 жыл бұрын
Indeed, Midichlorians were just a reflection of the Force following family genetics. This was always true in the series. If gifts in the Force follow family bloodlines, then there's clearly some (implied if not stated) biological agent responsible for the potential. While the mysticism is still present, potential in the Force was never portrayed as simple piety and belief but only ever genetics.

Benovix The Epic Gamer Jar Jar was supposed to be considered annoying considering he was excelled from his kind and even the Jedi are reluctant to use his help. The Ewoks defeated THE empire with sticks and stones.

I like the prequel's despite the bad dialogue in them, mostly episode II but I and III had their fair share of bad speeches. The blockade of the trade route in one confused and annoyed many people who saw it the first time! That did not bother me one bit, it was the rubbish way Darth Maul was defeated! The Empire Strikes Back Remains my personnel favourite and always will!

Lucas had a plan. He also had a plan for sequels. I so wish we could've had that instead of the thoughtless cash grab we got instead.

the fact that the emperor conquered the galaxy using trade laws and playing both sides, is the reason people have been taught not to like the prequels lol

Jason, you bring up a great point. The politics confused me, when "Phantom Menace" came out, I knew what a "trade law" was but didn't understand it's significance. It wasn't until Revenge of the Sith years later I understood what Palpatine was doing, believe it or not. I think bringing the role of government is what confused some children (such as I). Mind you, I saw episode 4,5,6 years earlier and understood the plot.

Well, the Originals plot is really straight forward, no need to think of anything, just watch. Prequels had some political commentary and a villain who used Republic against itself. I like him as a manipulator he is, instead of just another bad guy with an army. Trade laws weren't even important, just an excuse to get Naboo, Palpatine's home planet in trouble to get him more support during elections and to show on an actual example how spineless the Republic leaders have become. Trade laws can be replaced with any other reason for a conflict on Naboo, what matters is the conflicts itself. Even looking at Phantom Menace itself, George made it pretty clear who Sidious really is, IMO. I was surprised that there were people not realizing who he was. That final shot of Papatine's face on Qui-Gon's funeral right after Mace mentioned the Rule Of Two was all I needed to get it as a kid. So that means that even though Naboo is saved, the bad guy got what he ultimately wanted - to get the high position. Which even on its own, without Ep.2 and 3, makes sense. Although to be fair, as a kid I was more interested in the aliens and lightsabers than political manipulations and seeing the fact that the bad guy actually won, but not only there was enough of "lightsabers" and rich world for me, over time I started appreciating the political aspects and presentation of Sidious as someone so, well, insidious. He was able to manipulate the society into fighting itself, set up good guys to look bad and himself to be seen as a great savior. His Sith name really fits. There are some historic and political parallels with him. Way more interesting than "a bad guy came with an army he got from somewhere and took over". Another thing is that some people believe that politics shouldn't have anything to do with Star Wars... Politics with Star wars... politics and wars. Politics have everything to do with wars though. Even Originals had a bit of politics in them, like in Ep.4 when Tarkin talks about end of the Imperial Senate and control over territories. It is important. The Force Awakens for example didn't have any politics, so many people had to buy books just to figure out what the hell has happened to the Empire and what's the state of the New Republic, why the hell Resistance is some group that's not a part of New Republic's forces, and what the hell the First Order even is: Imperial remnants (if so, how many) or a new group, is it a union of star systems or planets, or a small group of terrorists? TFA didn't answer any of that, making people confused. If in Prequels one just needs to pay attention and will see the answers within those "boring political dialogues", with the new films you need to buy books since they don't give you much to work with. Politics have everything to do with wars, unless you don't even care what the fight is about.

It's not so much that Vader is Tarkin's lap dog as it is that he respects Tarkin's position as lead officer on the death star. Vader is all about imposing order so he respects it where it exists.

CMZIEBARTH I think Tarkin is more mysterious then we know. He had no fear of Vader, what so ever. Why? I bet he's Snoke. It would explain why TFA is a rehash. He most likely wanted to recapture the glory of the once powerful Empire, as he was a part of it. That would explain things nicely.

Here's one more (apologies if anyone else has already mentioned it)...Yoda in TESB says Luke is "too old" to begin the training of a Jedi. This presages the prequel revelation that Jedi training begins, essentially, upon detection of force sensitivity at or shortly after birth. And I love the prequels.

One minute in and you already wrote something less cliched but also more powerful than anything that was in TPM. "...a child born from the force." That is so direct, so fucking badass and gives so much more weight to that image of Anakin than anything that was in episode 1. Well done!

The clone soldiers didn't become storm troopers. Storm troopers were always trained recruits. The clones had accelerated aging, so by the time Luke and Leia grew up, those from the clone wars would be really, really old. And the cloning facility itself was lost during the war.
