Check out my $80 custom operator controlled discharge chute (OCDC) made from hardware store components. No welding needed.

I just obtained a Lesco commercial mower and I couldn't justify paying a silly $300 for a blocker when 90% of the parts are already on the mower, a freakin glorified door mat they use as a "blocker", some $3.00 springs, a rod and a handle with a $300 price? Screw that. Home Depot at the screws aisle and $20 later you have the same exact purpose item. I love this idea and I thought i was screwed. I forgot we are in a new day in age where things are Covid priced and many people have complete alternative ways. Thank you for this idea man.

Nice job, great score on the mower! Couple of suggestions. Lower your eyebolt to the bottom edge of your plate = better leverage. Your "J" hook could be cut closer to the curve & chamfered = much easier to hook while riding the mower.

Great design. I plan to make one very similar. I recommend tying wire rope thimbles inside the paracord loops. This will prevent abrasion of the paracord and will make it easier to get the mid-loop on and off the hook. Thanks for posting this video!

Looks like the functionality is there, but you might want to angle that 90-deg. gate open position just a little downward for safety reasons. Then again, seeing this vid is 5 years old now, and that is a K-Holer engine with over 1k hrs. on it, you probably don't have to worry about this mower anymore anyway.

Glad you liked it. One thing I would have changed: Where the carriage bolts on the deck contact the plate, I would still holes to allow it to close 100% flush.

Maybe you can add an L bracket and screw in a couple of strong earth magnets. Just a thought if you want a tighter fit. Might have to change your title to under $100 though. :-)

Could you tell me the pound rating for the tension springs you used? I’m going to make one of these for my Exmark Radius E 52”.

30-40 lbs/inch tension force. Don't remember exactly. A quick measurement of my setup led me to these springs: www.mcmaster.com/9654K157. The most important thing is .75" OD X .1" thick wire will give enough clearance for the shaft. A couple of these may also work. www.mcmaster.com/9271K655. FYI, I have been using mine since last year and no issues yet. I would suggest drilling a couple of holes where your deck carriage bolts are located so it closes flush.

I thought the need for a chute blocker was to stop the discharge when needed? This appears to be a mulching block off that can be opened. Maybe i have the wrong idea of what a chute blocker is.

I usually leave it open by hooking the loop in the Paracord. It works very well even on rough ground. On small lawns that can be mulched, I just leave it shut. I get your point though. Never thought of it that way. It works well for both though and after a season, it's holding up well. It's proved itself to be a very handy tool.
