Here are some highlights from the 1980 Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade with all of the original commercials included of course. These originally aired on NBC on November 27th, 1980. Happy Thanksgiving!
1. Nestle Toll House Morsels
2. General Electric
3. Promo for "Godzilla Hong Kong Phooey Hour" and "The Flintstone Comedy Show"
4. Promo for "Barbara Mandrell And The Mandrell Sisters
5. Child World
6. Coleco Head To Head Electronic Football
7. Child World
8. Promo for "The Sound Of Music"
9. Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade (Featuring The West Point Glee Club and Marilyn Michaels...who is totally not lip syncing)
10. McDonald's Gift Certificates (The boy at 7:16 is Kirk Cameron)
11. Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade (Featuring Todd Bridges and the cast of Broadway Musical "Barnum". That is Glenn Close singing...this was about two years before she became a film actress)
12. Zales
13. The Generals (Reminds me of the internal speaker in old DOS computers)
14. Nestle Crunch
15. Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade
16. Nestle Toll House Morsels
17. Karen & Her Magic Carriage
18. Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade (If you had told me before watching this that I'd hear Ed McMahon sing a song about Thanksgiving and would feel some genuine emotion toward it...I'm not sure I would have believed you)
19. Promo for "The Sound Of Music"
20. Child World
21. Coleco Head To Head Electronic Baseball
22. Child World
23. Promo for "Intergalactic Thanksgiving"
24. Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade (If you had told me before watching this that I'd hear Sister Sledge sing "We Are Family" while riding a giant Turkey...I'm not sure I would have believed you. And that appears to be actor Robert Vaughn in the crowd with the fancy camcorder at 22:22. Also featuring a rare glimpse of costumed characters from "The Aristocats")
25. Nestle Quik
26. GE Spacemaker Microwave Oven
27. TCR Slotless Racing
28. Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade ("Didja ever try stuffing an Eagle?" With Famous Amos, Scottish dancing, and the cast of "Brigadoon". If you had told me before watching this that I'd hear a couple sing while the Loch Ness Monster looked on...I'm not sure I would have believed you. And LOL at Ed McMahon's Budweiser plug..."I know those folks!")
29. Team America Super Stunt Dirtbike (♫America...F*** YEAH!♫)
30. McDonald's
31. Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade (Featuring the Happy Dragon balloon. This balloon was retired in 1981 and was brought back briefly in '91 and '92 before retiring again. Though it has been kept in storage since then it is currently the oldest surviving Macy's balloon)
32. Nestle Crunch
33. Rubik's Cube (First released by Ideal Toys in the U.S. that year, this was just before it became a national craze the following summer)
34. Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade (Featuring Popeye. Out of all of the music to use from this movie they chose this? They should have had Harry Nilsson drunkenly slamming on a piano playing "Blow Me Down" or "I Yam What I Yam". Also Featuring Linus The Lionhearted balloon and terrifying Clown man)
35. Promo for "Dick Clark's Good Old Days"
36. Promo for "Number 96" (This was a remake of a popular Australian soap opera...it was cancelled after one season)
37. Child World
38. Coleco Electronic Quarterback (With Mike Starr)
39. Child World
40. Promo for "The Sound Of Music"
41. Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade
42. Electronic Detective (With Don Adams)
43. Ronald McDonald House
44. Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade (Featuring Smokey The Bear balloon)
45. Flash (With Joe Namath and Jim Palmer)
46. Rubik's Cube
47. Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade (Featuring Underdog, Lacey J. Dalton, Dean Butler, OH GOD that terrifying Clown man again and Danielle Brisebois)
48. American Tourister
49. Polaroid (With Mariette Hartley)
50. Bell System
51. Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade (Featuring The Lone Ranger)
52. Rayovac Batteries
53. Toss Across and Mouse Trap
54. Bell Phone Center Store (Giving someone a landline telephone screams "last minute gift"...but those kitschy 70's phones look pretty awesome)
55. Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade (Featuring Casper the Ghost, the cast of "Sesame Street" and Kermit The Frog balloon)
56. McDonald's
57. Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade (Featuring Stephanie Mills and Henrietta Hippo. If you had told me before watching this that I'd hear The Spinners sing a Sam Cooke song next to a giant moth...I'm not sure I would have believed you. Also featuring Mother Goose. "Nice going Mother G!" Unfortunately the end of the parade wasn't recorded so no Santa)
58. The Generals
59. Nestle Toll House Morsels
60. Bell System

1980. Reagan just came into office, inflation and the economy wouldn’t recover for another couple of years, and from the sounds of some of these musical selections there’s a Disco spillover. What a great video time capsule. ❤

The Sesame Street float with Bob singing that wholesome song really got to me. 1980 was the first year I can remember, 77 baby, so seeing that cool float and the whole parade with MC Ed McMahon was really cool

14:57 I’m kinda fascinated by Ed McMahon’s Thanksgiving carol. I’ve Google’d several lines from it and the lyrics don’t appear to be anywhere on the internet, so I can’t find any information about it

Probably just an original song written specifically for the parade by somebody at NBC or Macy's. If this recording had included the credits there might have been a blurb about who authored it.

Yes, that was definitely Robert Vaughn in the crowd with the fancy camcorder at 22:22. I was wracking my brain trying to remember his last name. I knew he was Robert Something and even tried doing a Google Image search with a screenshot from your video but I think it was too small and got no results. Thanks for this upload. Great blast from the past.

Wow! This is gold right here, thank you! I see the Smurfs making their appearance at 10:09 on NBC ten months before the premier of the Smurfs cartoon series. I don’t remember the parade because I was in kindergarten at the time, but some of the commercials definitely rings a bell. Thank you again and Happy 🦃 day!

My favorite part is the Sesame Street float. It’s interesting to see an early Telly Monster, as this was the year that he became a major character on the show. On a more grim note, David (the black dude who helped Mr. Hooper run his store) is noticeably absent. This aired a couple of months after he went on a drug-fueled rampage in Nashville. He remained on the show until 1989.

Ed McMahon must have been prescient to call Diff'rent Strokes a "long-time running" sitcom when it was 2 years old at the time and would ultimately run for 8 years.

Happy Thanksgiving, first of all! 4:52 Call it a hunch, but I'm pretty sure the sound guy got yelled at for starting the tape late (also, "there's gotta be somebody watching the show" - on NBC in the late 1970s/early 1980s; not many) 9:34 As it happened, at least Bryant Gumbel would have a little bit of time for his day job hosting NFL '80 since NBC had the late Thanksgiving game 21:35 An off-model Mickey Mouse balloon sighting 43:35 An equally off-model Bullwinkle balloon In addition to the rare non-New Zoo Revue sighting of Henrietta Hippo and Freddy the Frog (I guess Charlie the Owl declined to appear); I saw a couple of Smurfs in the background (I wonder if NBC had already secured the rights to begin airing the Saturday morning cartoon for the 1981-82 season) as well as Daffy Duck.

11:47 I remember a different voice when I first heard saw that commercial. It made me think that first voice was more fitting when he said "Hmmm...". 17:37 I recall an earlier Child World commercial with a cartoon bunny. 17:47 I've played almost 9 innings of that game in a store. No employee stopped me (thank goodness), but my parents told that me we were leaving. 18:46 Gee! I don't recall ever hearing about that Thanksgiving special. 27:52 I've seen these commercials as an Evel Knievel lineup (with the same music). The one I got was a stunt-n-crash car. 30:47 This was some compilation of commercials made into one. One of these was with that baseball player chewing gum, maybe *that* was my first time seeing a Rubik's Cube. 31:17 I remember when that live-action Popeye was being released in theaters, people were making a big deal about it. In my opinion, the movie is fairly good. Maybe a fairly good movie wasn't enough to make a follow-up. 32:56 Linus the Lionhearted was canceled by the time I was born (but you can *now* see it on KZfaq). I wouldn't have thought he would make such an appearance by 1980. 34:10 I have the one on the right and it still works! 37:43 Smokey Bear is his name. Leave out the "THE". 40:13 When Lacey J. Dalton sings, it's like she's-a-shakin' real fast! 45:11 I recall when "The Legend of the Lone Ranger" was advertised. I wonder how it compares to the one with Armie Hammer and Johnny Depp.

Happy Thanksgiving! 1:29 To make you feel nostalgic in case you’re missing the mediocre USA Network’s Cartoon Express. - *looks up Child World in Wikipedia* Huh... you learn something new everyday... 4:50 not lip-syncing? I’m not sure I believe you. ;) 7:41 “longtime running series ‘Diff’rent Strokes’”. I’m not sure if being in a third season makes it a “long time”. I guess maybe if you’re comparing it with other shows introduced in NBC around this time... 11:49 “This sucks. Let’s play Stratego.” 15:43 I admire him in being a good sidekick to Carson. But the only genuine emotion I feel when hearing Ed McMahon sing is scoffing laughter. 21:00 ...but they DON’T “have all their sisters with” them. They are missing a sister. Liars. 27:04 The couple remind me of Wayne and Wanda from “The Muppet Show”. In fact, if it WAS “The Muppet Show”, the Loch Ness Monster would swoop his neck down and eat them. 31:58 You’re right... not rousing AT ALL. 43:07 If you put up a picture of Danielle Brisebois when she was with the New Radicals, and said it was the same person, I’m not sure I would have believed you. 50:43 Oscar not being a grouch about Christmas? Is he not feeling well? 56:38 Later on, Mother G had a failed rap career.
