engine came in with low compression and the owner wanted to know if the crank was hurt or just the top end....

My 2010 renegade 800 ptek with about 2000km crapped out this weekend and was ruining on just one cylinder. I changed the plugs and i thought it fixed the issue but was maybe just lucky for it bit. After a 30 min ride it went back down to one cylinder with zero compression on the clutch side. I stumbled across this video to learn more about the engine and how it goes together to try to find the issue. I just wanted to say there isn't a lot of sled videos on the internet like this that I could find. Keep up the great work and making good content. These videos are amazing.

Put the housing on the head then do your spring trick.

I dont trust assembly lube and 2 strokes so i mix the ultra slik with some 2 stroke oil .. klotz or amsoil whatever i got on hand.. very good work bud

Awesome video, I am getting a 2009 MXZ X 800R and PTO side compression is down, owned didn’t know by how much but going to strip it down and freshen it up. So glad I came across your video.

They are good engines as long as they are maintained properly…. Be sure to isoflex the PTO bearing every year or even get the “bearing buddy” and give it a shot of grease one a year. I personally would rather just pull the seal once a year and re-isoflex that way i can remove old grease that may still be there and inspect the bearing but thats just me

@@dabraapshack8754 thanks again, this will be my first 2 stroke toy and sled, and I am all over maintaining everything I own from bikes to boats to mowers. Looking forward to this one, first sled owner. Plan on checking running gear (hyfax sliders, drive wheels), change chain gear oil and check chain and adjuster, pull clutch and clean and isoflex crank bearing, clean chives with Brillo pad, clean clutchs of any dirt, tear down to wrist pin and build up, clean carb. Anything else you would suggest I check?

This is great. Have the same sled & blew the engine. Will be very helpful having this video to reference. Plan on making a video of it too. Is there anyway to to check the condition of the water pump without cracking the bottom end? Thanks in advance.

When you have it apart you can pull the water pump cover and check it out, but it can also be serviced without cracking the case

Just finished my rebuild on 10 ptek and thanks again!!! What's your recommended break in procedure? 30 km of varied throttle and nothing above 7000 rpm? 500 ml of premix too a full tank too, right?

i mix the first 2 tanks of gas and use the first tank as break in period, during which time i use the full range of throttle, never holding wide open for more than 2 seconds. Everyone has their own break in tactics.

Just curious,I just got my MXZ 800 etec back from the dealer and they say the compression for the mag side is 140 and the Pto side is 155 . What would you recommend I should be doing with this info? Do you think it’s rings only or new pistons also? Or nothing at all at this time. The machine runs great for now. Also they said the rave valves were not closing completely. Thanks

I would think it most likely be the rings but its hard to guess without seeing the cylinders. The 800 etec should be 150psi and I give them a max difference of 10%(15psi) so it should still run okay, and could do so for 1day, 100days, or 1000days but now is most likely the best time to get after it because it can only get more expensive. If it locks up you could be looking at a full rebuild whereas right now could be just rings and gaskets

Hey man awesome video ! But where did you get the 0.016 -0.025 ring gap tolerance from? Im being told 0.013-0.023 . 0.013 being absolute minimum.

Ring gap can vary depending on ring material and different manufacturers can have their own specifications for their pistons& rings

Hey, good video. I just rebuilt my 800 a few weeks ago, using the same pistons and a SPI block. It lasted for one ride, seized 3 times in 40 km. Have you ever had issued using wiseco pistons? I was always told from a lot of people they need more clearance but with a nikasil cylinder you can’t bore it out any. Did you measure everything first or just the ring gaps? I just assumed that the pistons would have worked with the cylinder, but I guess my clearance was too little.

I always measure everything just in case but i have never had an issue with weisco parts and have never noticed or been told they need extra clearance….i love weisco products

Weisco pistons use tighter clearances generally. You have to be careful with them. Good long warm ups and you need to wait for the coolant temps to go up before you give it a lot of throttle.

How do you clean your bottom end without pulling it apart. I have a bottom end that I need to rebuild how do I get rid of the old oil that's in the crankcase. Thank you

Pour gas, diesel, WD40, or any other petroleum based cleaner or solvent in there and spin it around and when you are satisfied with it pour some 2 stroke oil in there and spin it around some more so it is not sitting dry

So when someone marks a position to what cylinder it is to be installed in because that cylinder is clearanced for the position and ring end gap

When i check ring gap if i disassemble afterwards i will make sure that it goes back on the piston I checked it on and in the cylinder I checked it in but for the most part the pistons should be close enough that it doesn’t matter what side you put it on but once you check ring gap in my opinion you have chosen its spot and should remember to keep it, the rings, and the piston together

Hey man I have a question for you if you wouldn't mind I have 09 summit everest 800 and I have no spark and the lights don't even try to flicker when pulled over anything you can recommend to check I checked ohms on external coil seem fine checked red blue wire at Budd port and when pulled gets about 2 to 3 volts

Sounds like it could be an issue with the stator or the voltage rectifier/ regulator but its hard to know ow which one without getting hands on

@dabraapshack8754 ty for the reply wish you where around here to check it out lol I checked the plug with the 5 wires 3 yellow and can't remember the other to colors but I had ohms reading on the 3 yellow I had the volt reg out man that's something else to get at but didn't know how to test if bad cause the service manual doesn't have any specs to check

@@bradstone6093 the 3 yellow wires have to be checked with your voltmeter on AC not DC and should read between 40-70 volts AC between yellow wires

I believe it’s just engine assembly lube.

I was told after the fact that this machine had run low on coolant and got hot the day before she pooched but they said it did not overheat, just got hot, and i am pretty sure i said in this video that it looked like it got hot…so yeah heat is what i think killed this engine
