My grandfather had a Chevette as his second car. His main vehicle was a '79 Thunderbird and he bought the Chevette to have a fuel efficient vehicle. I remember going places with him in the Chevette...including driving on freeways. I recall being passed by everyone else on the road. He would actually make fun of it and it's lack of power and speed. He used to call it a Chevy "Shove-it".

I drove one of these Pontiac 1000 cars (until I wrecked it) easy to work on, brake rotors that were too small, kind of fun to drive for a new-ish driver due to the RWD layout

My grandparents bought me one for a high school graduation gift. It was the four door version with all the available options. There must have been something wrong with Motor Weeks car because I had no trouble merging on to freeways or cruising at 70 to 75 mph. I had it all through college and veterinary school. It racked up over 150k miles with minimal issues despite being subjected to ignored or delayed maintenance it's whole life. Hardly the best car I've owned but it was a reliable and durable workhorse that never left me stranded or failed to start.

Chevette/T1000 was alright with Isuzu Turbo-Diesel and 5MT - preferably as a 2-door for weight reduction’s sake. The 1st gen Isuzu I-Mark (Gemini) was even better - basically a Chevette that was well-made and assembled properly, very good economy car

Here's a fun fact - Chevrolet Chevette/Pontiac 1000/ Pontiac Acadian were all built off what's called a T- car platform, which started as an Opel Kadett for Europe and a Chevrolet Chevette for Brazil back in 1973. This is one of the reasons the car tested was such a fossil in 1982, compared with early 80's Euro and Japanese machinery. The two T cars I'm familiar with are the Vauxhall Chevette introduced in my country in 1976 and the Isuzu Gemini which turned up in 1977, later to be re-badged as a Holden. Even these were obviously early 70's cars, just polished up to last into the 80's. The Vauxhall was blessed with a plodding 1.3 litre overhead valve engine and four speed gearbox. The Gemini had a 1.6 litre and four speed manual or three speed auto. Later Holden versions had a five speed manual. I know GM in the USA did eventually import GM products such as the Opel Isuzu, Cadillac Catera, some later Saturn products and the Chevrolet SS and Pontiac G6 but by then they just couldn't read the market at all so really none of them was a raging success.

Funny story. Back in 1981 (I was 11), I lived in a tiny town with competing Ford and GM dealerships. For some reason, my parents purchased a brand new Chevette ( probably related to the after-effects of the oil crisis of that era). Anyway, I remember two things about it: 1) The interior doors had little trim and were bare painted metal to match the exterior, and 2) It lacked power-steering. Although it was a small car, it ended being a deal breaker for my dad and he traded it within a month or so for a 81 Mercury Lynx wagon. The Ford dealer ran an ad in a local paper with a pic of that exact Chevette and a caption unflatteringly comparing it to the new Escort. The Chevy dealer knew it was the car my dad had just purchased and were a bit peeved, even going as far as reaching out to inquire why he had traded it in so quickly. I later recall the Chevette again in 87 when I got my license. The local Chevy dealer was offering for $4995 either a brand new Chevette or Isuzu I-Mark. I think GM sold them through their dealerships at the time.

I drove a number of those “better” imports which ere available back then. None of them were really any better than either the Chevette or T1000. Unless you got very specific halo models, most of them were just as slow and un adorned as these cars. The German based Opel T cars these were based on were only slightly modified to meet American regulatory and emissions requirements and configured to have automatics and air conditioning, which was not often installed in the European versions of cars in this class. Plus, these cars were actually the most reliable, well screwed together GM cars from that period. They were basically the only GM cars that actually didn’t break down or fall apart around you before the payment book coupons ran out. These were cars you could beat on, neglect, abuse and they would still run. But after 15 to 20 years, most had reached the end of their service lives and made their way to the salvage yards because they were neither desirable or worth anything on the used market. Oh, by the way, with decent replacement tires and newer shocks, these were actually pretty good handling and riding cars. The T series cars had good European driving DNA in their bones. It was quite easy to access it and enjoy it for minimal expense.

Hatchbacks were quite popular in the late 70s and early 80s just remember the accord first came as a hatchback, VW Dasher because a 5 door hatch, while early on it was only a trunk.

You should do a direct comparison between this great GM product and a East-German Trabant 600 manufactured in the same period. Not sure that Trabant was worse... I must say this video made my day... 0 to 60 in half-a-day going downhill, probably with the wind blowing from behind. Mast and sail sold as option.

They’re easier to find overseas. Remember that the 1st gen Isuzu Gemini, Opel Kadett C, and Holden Gemini were the same car. If anything I’d prefer the Isuzu Gemini because it had better build quality (although it didn’t look like the Chevette due to body panel styling) and were actually fairly reliable.

We use to call them a "Vette, no the other Vette". I had the 'pleasure' 1978 (Chev) Vette with a stick. Slow and crude. It made mom's '79 Horizon seem like a luxury car. The early Escorts were close to the Omni-rizons, but something always felt off. That said, T1000/Chevettes may have been slow tin cans, but they weren't know to set you afoot very often.

MotorWeek Retro Reviews are my favorite of all automobile reviews. But then again, I'm really old! lol. When I lived in America, I worked for a GMC/Pontiac dealer in Northern Illinois, the Pontiac 1000 was one of the service department's biggest moneymakers when it came to repairs. They were constantly breaking down! Among many other cars, I own an Opel Corsa Elegance, its pathetic 4-cyl has a whopping 75-hp, just about as slow as that Pontiac 1000! (Much better gas mileage though!) I remember the MWRR you were talking about, the LeCar was at the very bottom of all the econoboxes they tested. The LeCar was a complete Pile-O-Crap! Did you ever do a video on that particular MWRR yet? I really like your channel, BTW.

This was a messed up car with the kickdown not working. They were slow cars, but not that slow. I feel it was irresponsible for them to publish this knowing it wasn’t working properly. The Chevette is remembered by most as a damn good dependable car that was as dependable as gravity and never failed. They thrived on neglect.

A 1981 Mustang hatchback was around $7500 with a few options...and if you wanted 4 doors the Fairmont was around the same price. I don't know if the insurance cost was much better on the Chevette/1000 but really at this price point, there were some much better domestic offerings.

As a car enthusiast, I like your MotorWeek Retro Reviews. For one thing, even though I bought my first car (a new Mazda 626 sedan in late '81), I never saw MotorWeek at the time. In that respect, it is interesting to see your take on the show along with reading the comments. For another, I realized that the American car industry had already entered its dark age and wouldn't recover for at least three or four decades. So, I muse along as you dispatch MotorWeek.

Good video. This exactly summarizes my perspective on GM. The biggest reason GM continued to make these is the CAFE standards in place back then. Unlike now the standards were not tied to sales. So GM could bring the standards up with the mere availability. Hence the Pontiac 1000. They sold almost none but they required no additional investment and double the CAFE average when combined with the Chevette. Yes other cars were better but GM didn’t care and didn’t spend any marketing dollars on them. By 1983 there sales plummeted. There only big years were 1980-1982 they were reliable which is more than can be said for the Citation or the first two years of the Escort or K cars from 1981-82.

Wasn’t the Chevette based on the Opel Kadett C? That said, by the time this review was done, the C was replaced by the FWD Kadett D in 1979, per Wikipedia. Pretty sad that they had basically introduced the T-body as a “world car” minus the claim of being a world car without actually keeping them in sync. Mind you, the C hit the European market three years before the chevette hit our shores.

My first car was an 84 Pontiac 1000. 4 door automatic. Power brakes power steering aftermarket cruise control and air conditioning. It was a great car. Roomy dependable. Good on snow. Fast enough. And easy to fix. Better than most of the offerings in this niche today. The review here is nonsense. It was not a race car. Not designed to be. But I got mine up to 90 mph. And I got a few tickets

The engines in these cars were made by Isuzu. I wonder how much difference it would make putting an Iron Duke in one. Didn't Pontiac make the Iron Duke? The biggest gas engine in the Chevette was the Isuzu 1.6. The Iron Duke was a 2.5 I think. If I had a Chevette that was in great shape I wouldn't mess with it. But if I had one with engine problems I would either put a 2.5 Iron Duke or a 2.8 V6 in it. I've seen people put 350 V8s in them. But that's too much. I think the 2.8 V6 would be perfect for the size and weight of the Chevette. I think the biggest engine I would try to swap in would be a Buick 3.8 turbo from the Grand National. That would be insane

My Honda Fit - one of the last - gets 130 hp from 1.5L, has tremendously more space in the same footprint, and still only weighs 2550 lbs. And yes, I had to search around a bit to find one with the manual trans, and it gets MPG in the low 40s if I stay out of the fun part of the tach, high 30s if I let the VTEC kick in (yo) a lot. One thing GM should've done was when Vauxhall and Opel replaced their versions of the T-Body they replaced it with a new car around 1980. Why GM didn't do that for the Chevette is beyond me. Maybe they could've had a decent Civic and Corolla rival and not had to sell their own Toyota's later.

It’s like american’s have their fazes if it comes to cars. In the 70s and 80s it was how bigger how better. they had those gigantic v8 sedans. Like Oldsmobile cutlass saloon.. Cadillac.. checrolets.. Buick’s ... and some huge stationwagons. Than in the 90s came. And it was like they went european style and stepped into toyota camry’s honda accords honda civic’s Toyota Corolla’s vw jetta’s sedans and dodge mini van’s and picks-up were just work cars. This was also in the beginning Of the new millennium. And than the last 10 to 15 years it’s like the gasoline was endless and cheap and and the how bigger how better came in a different level..normal families in oversized dodge rams ford f150’s. Silverado’s chev’s suburban’s and vans like toyota sienna’s and honda Odessy’s. And what’s next? In all those times europeans’s didn’t changed they still drive their compact hatchbacks and stationwagons. Like bmw 3 serie audi a4. Totota prius. Toyota corolla. Volkswagn golf’s opel’s. French cars.. small city cars.. like we always did. And it never changed.

Generally speaking, Americans WANT the big, comfortable cars. Generally our roads and spread-out lives require cars. We tend to change when we HAVE to. :)

@@AllCarswithJon but what was happend in the 90s when everybody drove normal sized and compact cars sedans. Like accord and corolla. And what was the reason that americans were able to step in the huge cars again?

@@jdnrotterdam2150 : A few years ago we had a German support engineer to work for a month in our company here in Michigan. He initially wanted to rent a small car, like a Corolla, but he finished up getting a Dodge RAM truck with a V8 engine. The guy simply fell in love with that truck, said he wants to pack in his suitcase when he returns to Europe. Moral of the story: don't jump to conclusions until you experienced driving in US... Wide open roads can be an eye opener.

@@bkucinschi i do believe that a dodge ram drives great. But what was the reason that people drove smaller before and go back to huge? Like they sis with those american flagships in the 60’ 70’s and 80’s. But stopped in the 90s

@@jdnrotterdam2150 : It's a long story... Before WW2 people in US went through a lot of economic hardships (the Great Depression basically subsided only in 1942, based on economic indicators). After the War the Americans enjoyed a pretty good standard of living, the industrial production converted back to civilian production and the automotive industry could provide enough cars for everybody. Gas was cheap, driving distances quite long compared to European countries... why would choose a small engine, sacrifice comfort and safety for a few pennies? Look at the engines in the 50's and 60's ... like, say, the famous GM V8 of 425 cubic inches for a sedan (that's 7000 cm3 by the way...). In Europe of course everybody was poor after the war, economies is shambles, few people could afford a new car. and when they could they were quite small. I think the classic VW Bug was 1100 cm3. On top of that, the taxation was based on engine size. In France they used to have nice big cars&engines before the war (Delahaye, Voisin, Bugatti), but after the war I heard (but not sure...) they taxed based on cylinder bore, which favored long stroke engines. Gas was always heavily taxed in Europe, so it got more expensive. But as US suffered from the 1973 oil crisis, people started to consider smaller engines. The conditions here encourage big vehicles, such that when times get a bit better people return to bigger vehicles, that's probably why car and trucks did indeed become larger after that. We still have cheaper gas than in Europe... but that's slowly eroding, and the standard of living is slowly but surely going down the drain, especially now that Feds print money like there's no tomorrow. Soon we'll be lucky if we can afford to drive a lawn mower.

Enjoyed the look back at this horrible car. This is a good reason why GM lost so much market share in these years. They made terrible cars.

Truly an embarrassment to the Pontiac name. On the other hand, "Knight Rider" debuted in 1982, making the Firebird all the rage. Law of averages? ^^

In the SUVs and crossovers, the hatch is not so obvious. That's why they do better than traditional hatchbacks.

This is way GM dropped Pontiac and other divisions. The Chevette perhaps was a good Chevy, give the same car to Pontiac, why? Does Pontiac sell Chevy's? So Pontiac is now a Chevy division.

Pontiac always had rebranded cars. Even back in the 1960's Pontiac had cars that were similar to what Chevrolet had. The difference was different taillights, grills, and hubcaps. Some Chevrolet Bel Aires, and Impalas were also sold as rebranded Pontiacs.
