101st isn’t airborne, they’re air assault so they don’t drop things by chute they sling load stuff under helos. They left the airborne part in there for heritage purposes.

It’s also meant to be a deterrent as airborne units have the ability to be rapidly deployed anywhere anytime. There were a few combat jumps during the GWOT as well. Different airborne brigades rotate in and out as the division readiness brigade that can be loaded on a bird and headed anywhere in 18 hours or less. Think of nukes, when’s the last time one was used? But we still have them and have them ready to go if needed as a deterrent.

It looks that way but you can’t really see how the DZ goes on forever past those trees in front of me. Nobody in the trees, it’s a long DZ.

This isn’t celebrating the whole country it’s the army’s 82nd airborne divisions week where they do family demos and have guys that served as paratroopers come back and get together. They do all kinds of events all week, some to demonstrate capabilities and some for fun.

They’re going about 145. The c17 is just big and appears to be slow even at 550-1000 ft high.

They also don’t want to be dropping stuff by parachute at high speed. They need the chutes to open and not shred to pieces. They’re still moving though, it just looks slow, but as someone who’s jumped from enough I can personally say it’s moving at a god rate.

To the fellow that erased his comment...the 82nd does NOT operate C17s!! So again, I guarantee the 82nd didn’t have anything to do with this drop. I retired as a C-17 FCC. And my wife is a current C-17 loadmaster....whom ACTUALLY drops tanks from C-17s!! The 82nd is army. And the C-17 is Air Force. Sometimes the 82nd jumps from c-17s. But they have NOTHING to do with the operation of the jet or heavy/equipment airdrops.

Plus im almost to the point of guaranteeing that is a McChord AFB Jet....where i retired from and my wife is currently stationed....as an airdrop, evaluator loadmaster. As the tail clearly does NOT have a yellow stripe. So ima have to say it’s a green tail. Bc Charleston and McChord are the only airdrop C-17 bases.

The 82nd has heavy drop riggers that work with Air Force loadmasters who are responsible for rigging it up on the aircraft. I was airborne and have family that commanded the rigger unit so I got to see the process as a paratrooper and also as a civilian seeing a demo from start to finish close up. The aircraft was out of Pope Army Airfield attached to Ft. Bragg but is still an Air Force bird. All kinds of different Air Force units rotate in and out of Pope. I know when I jumped not long ago my chute was packed by an army rigger every time, I was checked by an army jumpmaster every time and the loadmaster was the one who helped oversee our jumps and get us on the DZ.

I know it looks that way but that DZ goes on forever, nobody in the trees this time definitely not like the DZ I got used to.

Static line jumps are way more dangerous and have a much higher rate of injury. Lower altitude = less time to react to something gone wrong before you just burn in, all kinds of risks associated with the static line itself, hardly any real control of where your going in the air or where you’re going to land, and no soft standing landing, you fall fast and slam into the ground because you can’t flare your landing.

No, the 187th Infantry Regiment “Rakkasons” is from the 101st which isn’t actually an airborne unit it and hasn’t been for a while. The 101st is out of Ft. Campbell and they’re air assault so the don’t actually jump at all. This is the 82nd Airborne Division out of Ft. Bragg. There is also the 173rd out of Italy that is airborne and the 11th Infantry Division out of Alaska which is an arctic airborne unit. The 101st just kept the “airborne” part of their name for historical purposes.
