I Repowered my 8550 with a (25000mk2) 844 cu. Inch engine from an Allis pan scraper. 450 plus horsepower.

really happy with the swap, fuel economy is actually cut in half compared to the original engine. I can run higher gears at far less rpm, usually 1600 or so.

I had to swap out the flywheels and front motor mount and make a new throttle linkage since tgis motor uses a cradle mounted injection pump instead of a flange mount which moved it back about a foot. tge hood will have to be widened out at the back so that it's the same width as the front to cover the larger turbo and intercooler. Hoping to get to that this summer. As far as the drive train holding up, time will tell but I don't pull anything with it that I couldn't pull with the old engine.

Looks like the 844 doesn't have a problem doing the job. I just discovered this engine was used in semis for a minute, the problem in that application was the remote mounted filtration system that caused bottom end problems. That and the cranks breaking at the snout.

The original 8550 engine was a destroked version of the 844 Allis engine. It was the only time they did that. The 844 was used in large Allis Industrial Applications like the HD21 Crawler and other applications. You could special order the 844 Allis engine in a White Freightliner over the road trucks. Not many were sold but there was one Carlinville, Il where I lived. Cummins Engine Company hooked up with Allis Chalmers about the time of the Fiat-Allis merger and supplied the 6 cylinder 855 engine for the late HD21, the 6 cylinder KTA-1150 for the HD31 and the V-12 VTA-1710 cu.in engine in the HD-41. All were build for a while in the Springfield, IL before the Jimmy Carter embargo of Fiat export a large order to Russia of crawler and other equipment sold to lay the oil and natural gas pipelines out of Siberia to SW Russia. Fiat would not cancel the order to Russia so they moved the entire manufacturing plant to Italy and finished the order on time.

The HD21 or the 21C was never equipped with an 855 big cam. The 31 and 41 were always powered by Cummins

Did you field weigh it at all after?. We had an 8550 that could pull more than traction allowed. Just not heavy like a Stieger, a lot of spin especially on dry stuff.

Who needs a hood? We have a whole herd of John Deeres, 2 Steigers, 3 versatiles and might as well leave the hood off all of them...Why the sam hell deere didnt make a hinge hood until the 7820 is beyond me..Those steiger panther hoods are heavy mofo's...

Fuel economy cut in half??.According to A-C,at FULL LOAD,the twin turbo A-C would burn about 9.86 gallons of diesel per hour in the 8550.Most lawn mowers aren't that good if you do the math. Most new tractors in the 300-350hp.class will burn over 15 gallons per hour at FULL LOAD.(example;J.D.8530 is 350hp.and burns just over 18 gallons at full throttle)
