In 2012, an 85 year old woman named Marilyn Hagerty would write a seemingly innocuous food review for the Olive Garden restaurant located in her home town. After being published online, the review would get attention from high brow food critics and redditors. Many felt Marilyn’s review to be comically detailed to be written for a chain restaurant. She would face a wave of online mockery for some time. Today I tell you all the story of Marilyn’s Olive Garden Review, and how she turned the tables on her detractors.

Older people have such a rigid idea of what's proper and when. Like drinking lemonade on a cold day, calling after 8pm, watching a movie on a weekday etc. It's like any deviation from what's normal causes a short circuit. It's kinda hilarious. This lady is adorable though.

As someone who lives in a small Midwest town, everyone lost their damn minds when we got a freaking Taco johns! Everyone piles into Applebees to drink and watch a game. People in larger towns/cities don’t realize that in small towns we don’t get a lot of options, so we appreciate the few luxuries we have. Even if it’s an Olive Garden.

💯 Was in and out of homelessness as a teen/early 20s. Soup kitchens were where I ate most of my meals back then. I gotta say Olive Garden looks pretty good and fancier than Swiss Chalet. There's no Olive Garden around me, so I've never been. I know I wouldn't feel comfortable in an actual fancy, expensive restaurant. I was brought to one once. I was appalled at the prices and just wanted a poutine; which ofc such a place is above (fries, gravy, cheese curds.) The closest they had were pommes des frites; super skinny long French fries that were limp and tasted like disappointment. Perhaps they weren't properly made, idk, I just know they were overpriced and ruined fries by trying to fancify them. The fries weren't the worst of the experience, but certainly the most memorable 😅 Those people can be pretentious if they want. The rest of us keep it real and have a better time spending less money.

Went to a local very expensive Italian restaurant since my ridiculously snobby cousin was in town and she couldn't palate the likes of OG. Stand up Straight: Right. The quality doesn't get serious until the price gets to something like 5X, and I just can't stand to spend that kind of money even for a really great meal, on the principle of the thing. Upbringing by parents who both lived through the great depression as kids, and who knew and taught the value of a dollar and frugality (which I respected a lot), I suppose. Far easier for people to waste lots of money and then demand that everyone take care of them because they are "poor" though. (And I'm not talking about actual poor people here, but whiners with little to no self discipline).

When you live in a safe, rural Midwestern town, you best believe an Olive Garden opening is major positive news. Anthony was right - this is how America eats. All the best memories I have of eating out with friends and family are at places like Applebee’s, Souplantation (RIP), Denny’s and Texas Road House, not the fancy places. Birthdays, graduations, road trips, late night high school hangouts. Casual dining is where you go regularly because it is both affordable and a fun place to hang out, with atmosphere as homey as the company you keep. Dennys has crap service and mediocre food, but we still visit again and again on road trips because that is tradition. The beautiful thing about chain restaurants is consistency - you always know what kind of food and service you are going to get.

Amusingly, she achieved a bit of fame and fortune, because a bunch of nobodies decided to mock her. Kudos to Bordaine (sp?) in all of this. But for me, I MUCH preferred various hole in the wall Italian eateries with good food and far less decor at similar prices. The flipside is that, if you're still having a job and too busy to interact with people online at 85... I mean, you gotta stop the hustle at some point. Plus, most people have jobs and are busy. It's not like the trolls are spending hours of their lives hunting her down and tormenting her. They're probably going "Haha, look at this dumb review, I'm gonna take 2 minutes to tell her that it's dumb on my break." Honestly, people who think "Wow, this person posted a mean comment. They obviously have no job and don't contribute to society at all because they could have used that one precious minute at work," is somehow even more sad. It's like confessing that you don't have any free time to yourself, and taking the time to respond like that shows the trolls that they won and makes their victory even sweeter because the "Lol, you suck," comments got to you because you didn't ignore them, you actively told them that despite your busy schedule and things to do you took time to tell them "Fuck off. I'm much better than you, and better than these comments. I'm above replying to you.... Wait..."

@TheDodicat hate to break it to you but after 15 years in the food industry unless your going to a 5 star restaurant the food is going to be microwaved or flash cooked. It's a sad but true reality. Even small family restaurants that I've worked for have primarily used microwaves. I had to fight to make fresh dishes at my last place of employment. I literally had to show everyone (owner, other cooks, and management) that it was fast, easy and totally worth having the customer be happy with their food. It takes an extra few minutes to make something fresh vs frozen and microwaved as long as its prepped ahead of shift, but the restaurant industry is more interested in fast because people get upset when they have to wait 15 minutes for their food.

As I recall I was about 10. To me that was as enjoyable as the surf and turf many people were eating, and I could get steak or even the occasional surf and turf at home). Looking back, I was a weird kid, but I like being at my college "fighting weight" of 120 pounds (though no longer all solid muscle) over 40 years later, and things like salads are key to that.

Lesardah: And of course, the irony is, that there is plenty of hate for literally EVERYTHING on the internet, so it's not like ANYTHING said would make close to all the haters happy (from what I observe, and of course, I could be wrong, but it sure seems that way). So many people need to GET A LIFE. As someone who had a life partner (girlfriend, but didn't marry) from a small town, the wholesomeness of many people in such places is awesome. Like my girlfriend's best friend next door neighbor father who at age 85, was still an active farmer, muscular, tanned, and hard working, and pretty much unstoppable. Wouldn't have believed it if I didn't see it year after year, decade after decade, as I aged normally in my computer geek office job.

In short, this is why Anthony, is the man. He checked himself, stepped back and took a look, and not only saw Marilyn for who she was, but decided to step forward and join her. He had years in the business, he knew, food is food, we all eat… I grew up eating this food, and was thrust into high end food (through starting as a dishwasher) early on. I walked away from the business when my kids showed up (read Kitchen Confidential) because the business and it’s culture, was not something I wanted to be a part of any more… People cook, serve, work hard, whether it’s McD’s or the best digs in Manhattan. The abuse, being served up in this world, is just ugly. Bourdain, stepped up, and recognized this for what it was, an honest review, about honest food, prepared by honest people, for honest people. Rest in peace Anthony. You were one of a kind.

Extra crazy part is, even if you did not know anything about the town, the history of her work (chain restaurant reviews), or her age. Her review is not pretentious or does not make out the restaurant, or its food, to be anything extra special - just nice, comfortable, and reasonable. To Bourdain, props for having class. To the haters, what's sad is that their lives are so pathetic, they feel good about themselves by mocking an old lady who is wise enough to enjoy the simple things in life instead of hating everything or attacking everyone who doesn't think like them. For one thing, maybe Marilyn has the wisdom and perspective to appreciate being 85, and being healthy enough to enjoy going to Olive Garden and being able to enjoy (and digest) the food. Given her response, compared to her detractors, well, it says it all. But of course, the "cool kids" need to mock her for her decision to have water, assuming they know why, even they actually know NOTHING about it (or her health, etc). Brilliant. (NOT). In a world full of science deniers and political hacks who aren't old enough to have an excuse for being so clueless, the haters should look in the mirror and spend some effort GETTING A LIFE more and whining less.
