It’s been one wild exciting ride for Spinosaurus! From its earliest discovery, to its irreplaceable loss from the ravages of war, to its renaissance that seemingly began from Jurassic Part III to Dr Nizar Ibrahim’s 2014 paper, and then with another bombshell this year in 2020.
I’ve followed the arguments, counterarguments, theories, countertheories, proposals, counterproposals for the longest time and yet, I’ve actually never done a Spinosaurus review! Well, what more auspicious way to start than with this, PNSO’s amazing 2020 revised Spinosaurus. How well will it stand up to scrutiny against the latest scientific evidence? I attempt to find out!

I just wanna point out that the quadrupled posture is actually inaccurate now after finding its capable of standing bipedal without support, how theropod limbs are meant to carry weight etc. Several papers from mid 2014 onwards discuss this It feels like quadrupled Spinosaurus isn’t going anywhere especially in model form tho. It’s a beautiful model but hopefully someday we’ll get a 2020 Spinosaurus that can stand properly eventually

Thank Ryaquaza. I mentioned this at the end of the video. Besides the ability to support the arms there is also a question of where the centre of mass would actually be if you modelled using different tail volumes, for example. I may elaborate more in a different video but if I started talking about centre of mass in this video it would have dragged it out even longer and started sending people to sleep lol. In a way it's a good thing this was a small model, because when they do have a more confirmed consensus, that's when I want PNSO to come out with a 1:35!
@vesuvius115

Indeed, the new 2020 tail was very muscular and long, changing what we thought was its center of gravity, the tail was a counter-balance, which made Spinosaurus walk bipedally and more upright then other dinosaurs.

Thank you Michael I'm delighted to hear that! I love dinosaurs and have been self learning for the last couple years, and I love models, so I tend to mix the two. Spinosaurus is a real delight, and the papers were actually much easier to read compared to some others I've tried that are way beyond me. If we can understand the science a little more, we can appreciate these models and enjoy them (and appreciate the artistic teams who put in so much into them) more too!

Amazing figure, it also fits in 1:35 scale, as the figure is based on the specimen who new tail vertebra belonged to, which was around 10 meters in length.

Good point and thanks for bringing that up! In fact some of my other Spinosaurus models in the 1:40 and 1:35 are about the same size too, so I'm happy to consider this 1:35 with the rest and call it all good! Any differences on my shelf I close one eye and put to age and acceptable deviations 😉

Damn. This is the PERFECT Spinosaurus figure, the sculpt and the colors and everything! Only gripe I have is how small it is, because if it was a little bigger it would’ve displayed so awesomely (imo) with other large carnivore models that are available. But other than that, DAMN!!! I HAVE to get me this...

This is definitely a must have! I prefer 1:40 or 1:35 but when something like this comes along, with so many things coming together in such a beautiful way, I just have to ignore scale. That being said, I've learnt declared scales in models are not always correct. For example my this one is about the same size as my 1:40 Carnegie. CollectA also have been very disappointing in completely ignoring declared scales. For example I really loved their 1:20 prehistoric mammal collection, until they threw it out the window with their rididculously sized Elasmotherium.

So impressed by PNSO’s paint application on their recent models. Looks just like the prototype image on the box! Will have to pick this one up. You wrote my thoughts exactly! If PNSO could revisit some of their golden oldies, it would be phenomenal! Many times sculpts are great, but really let down by their paintjob, for example the Safari Ltd dinosaurs are really good but I feel let their colours dont do them justice. Rather disappointed by the latest Safari Spinosaurus reveal.

That is an excellent figure of Spinosaurus! Though things get complicated with how Spino walked as scientists argue over the dinosaur having its center of gravity towards the pelvis and that it cannot walk on its front limbs without them breaking.

@@DinosDragons And that’s actually one of the reasons I have recently started favoring dragons over Dinosaurs, despite how huge dinosaurs are as my childhood and I have around three times + more dino collectibles than dragons. The big issue with dinosaurs is scientific accuracy and one needs a lot of luck to collect the near perfectly accurate toy of a dinosaur (for example, I have the Safari Ltd feathered T-Rex that was released in recent years and already there is scientific evidence that T-Rex was too big to be covered in feathers) before they become dated, and don’t get me started with that obnoxious praying mantis posed front limbs on the theropod dinosaurs (and I am also glad your Spinosaurus figure avoided that trope). Dragons on the other hand are mostly fantasy, they have no need to catch up with modern discoveries unless it makes them look cooler, and even though I still have pet peeves over certain mythological accuracy, I’m more forgiving about such when buying dragon/whatever mythological toys I come across.
@DinosDragons
@DinosDragons 3 жыл бұрын
@@mustachetwirler7617 I think it's an interesting dichotomy here. With dinosaurs, we are looking for anatomical accuracy and these keep getting revised. Personally I would like having one representative from each incarnation, except that besides that pesky problem of money there's the even more insurmountable problem of SPACE! As for T Rex, I did get the Safari and the CollectA, although in my narrow-mindedness I'd already laughed off the ridiculous plumage of the CollectA as probably impossible. The sculpts themselves were so goo I got them just as works of art. With dragons, we're looking for mythological accuracies. Still I've found with dragons that I still do appreciate them even more when I see some effort made to have some kind of anatomical logic, or that certain parts look well thought out. So while I can happily overlook the implausibility of elbow spikes, I find it tough looking at a forced multi-headed dragon where there doesn't seem to be a possible anchor for neck musculature, or if one comes off at a forced angle (cough...Series 7 Hydra dragon).

It's the 2019 Wild Safari Swimming Spinosaurus. It's about USD$27. I didn't get it mainly because of the leg broken look, the scales are too uniform, and because of the neck posture, only works in a surface swimming context. @DinosDragons

The GR Toys version is a beautiful specimen, especially the tail. However there are a couple of things that I feel the PNSO has over that. First, it is mising that distinctive kink around the Ca4 level, but which might just be due to a design choice to have it covered by skin or muscle) and second, the weightbearing on the left hand looks incredibly awkward. The PNSO takes a knuckle walking approach and looks more natural. However overall the GR Toys is beautiful and at its size, is really impressive. I'm ok to overlook these.

I don't think the eyes were sculpted and painted in the right position. It looks too high up in the skull. I like the older Essien's head better. Also I cannot fathom how those small hind legs can support all that body weight unless the dinosaur spent most of its time in water - but it's how the the latest version is viewed.
@DinosDragons
@DinosDragons 3 жыл бұрын
It certainly seems to me to be the case too and it might very well be aquatic most of the time following this interpretation. Now imagine this... recent speculations suggest this creature might be bipedal after all! So if you think those two hind limbs couldn't possibly support anything in quadrupedal mode, imagine bipedality!

Did spinosaurus really bear osteoderms? I think these features are generally present in sauropods and in some ceratopsians. Will you please enlighten me with this issue?
@DinosDragons
@DinosDragons 3 жыл бұрын
I don't believe osteoderms were actually found with the Spinosaurus and is mostly speculative. However we have impressions of them in large theropods. Off the top of my head I believe Ceratosaurus and definitely Carnotarus had them. Ceratosaurus had them as a single midline row, while Carnotaurus did show parallel rows of them. So in that sense it probably seemed possible that any perumtation of the two extremes might be present in other theropod dinosarus too. Since we don't know definitely, artists often speculate and extrapolate. That's why in recent years you commonly see sauropods with a row of spines running down the midline, and why you see ceratopsians sometimes depicted with tail bristles because Psittacosaurus was found with them. Finally I must admit (as I did in my latest PNSO video review of Corythosaurus) that I'm guilty of using the word "osteoderms" too loosely, when many times I really mean scutes. Scutes can also mean extra large scales, or unusual scales called feature scales, and these DON'T have to be osteoderms. So while Spinosaurus may or may not have osteoderms, it is very likely they would have had feature scales and scutes.

The head sculpt of the schleich Tarbosaurus is pretty much correct, Tyranosaurus like but thinner and correct length, the teeth need to be replaced and inner mouth repainted correctly, arm limbs will be shortened to the correct length and detailed airbrush job with proper weathering will show the final result. The PSNO overall look is a bit too chubby and lower legs are also a bit too thick in my opinion. Large carnivore theropods were heavy and constant pursuit of food kept them rather slimmer than chubby. Many experts have same opinion but then none of us were really there with the dinosaurs so its all theories really. Let's take example of a human skeleton. Underweight, normal weight and overweight will all have different appearance except for having a head, two arms and two legs attached to the torso.

I'd almost forgotten about that species! Last I recall this species was still pretty poorly known, by highly fragmentary remains. Hopefully more will come to light, we need more spinosaurids (that are NOT spinosaurus haha)
