Luke's English Podcast

Luke's English Podcast

3 ай бұрын

A very long rambling episode with a big mix of vocabulary, stories about my trip to Rome, comments from listeners, lots of thoughts about episodes I've published over the last 12 months, more advice about learning English, and a story about being Jackie Chan's English teacher.

When I came across Luke’s podcast 10 years ago I couldn’t imagine where it would lead me in my life. I had been listening to the episodes primarily just for personal entertainment when suddenly I realised that my level is good enough to start my own teaching career😂 I quit my 9 to 5 job and embarked on this journey shivering from fear of standing in class in front of other curious people waiting for me to teach them new stuff. Now I’m experienced and yet still have moments of impostor’s syndrome. Living my dream life in a new beautiful country and enjoying freedom mostly thanks to Luke and his way of delivering facts and jokes. Probably Luke will never see this post but he has thousands of grateful listeners who can relate to the abovementioned. Thank you and keep it up!

In 2018, I traveled to the northernmost part of Siberia to teach kids in a small village. With only around 100 residents, there was no reliable mobile or internet connection, sometimes leaving me unable to communicate with family and friends for days. Fortunately, the school had Wi-Fi (not the fastest, but at least it was available) intended strictly for teaching purposes. I sneakily downloaded your podcast to my flash drive. It became a source of entertainment for me during the polar nights of winter. Thank you for brightening up my days, no matter where I am. You're the best Luke!❤

Hello Luke, thanks for this new episode, I like to listen to you every now and then, telling nice stories with a friendly and beautiful voice. I saw you in Rome on Thursday 22nd February, surely you were recognized by Romans more than once! First I came across the two very blond ladies ahead, walking very fast and very busy talking to each other and then you, following with a pram. It was already dark, about six in the evening in Trastevere and I didn’t want you to be left behind, so I didn’t stop you. I still remember what it’s like to get lost with the rest of the family in a big city! Twenty years ago I got lost in Paris (in the Louvre!!) with a baby boy in the pram. I stopped for a moment at the toilet to change the baby’s diaper and when I went out half of the family (husband and an older daughter) has vanished!! The Louvre is a huge maze! I didn’t move from there but they had moved and weren’t able to find the place again. So, my seven years old daughter stayed at the museum reception where they made some announcements and my husband kept wandering around. At the time I hadn’t a mobile phone (and couldn’t speak any French) so I spent almost two hours waiting patiently and pushing the pram back and forth…

I think you should warn your audience that listening to your podcast can be very dangerous. After just a couple of episodes I’ve got completely addicted and now I can’t stop. I love your short stories and I like so much your rambling episodes too, no matter how long they are. With your beautiful voice, your lovely British accent and your sense of humor you could read your shopping list and it would be interesting, amusing, useful and totally enjoyable From now on I will stop watching Netflix movies that I can’t completely understand, it so frustrating. I will listen to your podcast instead, so hopefully my old-fashioned-miss-Marple-English (I’m a big fan of Agatha Christie novels) will become more modern and more fluent. Thank so much for your great podcast, Luke.

Hi Luke! I'm one of the rare LEPsters who started listening in 2015, but I'm so sorry there was a break from about 2017 to 2023 because I was trying new professions. But now I'm here again ❤ And I'm so happy to watch your podcast on KZfaq now! And the episodes are still long, and you keep rambling sometimes that makes me feel you're talking to me, and you keep inviting people as Lucy, Kate, Amber, so that I listen to natural conversations easy to understand. I' ve tried different KZfaq channels, but yours is the best because it makes words and expressions stick in my mind. Thank you so much ❤❤❤

Hi Luke Your explanations about the length of the episodes totally make sense. I stop whenever I want to think about a word or a grammatical structure or I need to stop for any other reason. Autonomy and freedom for all listeners, jeah!!! And as for the beard, I quote Roald Dahl from his book "The Twits": "When a man grows hair all over his face it is impossible to tell what he really looks like...". And that's just his harmless introduction to the subject. I'm a newborn LEPster and am currently skipping through the episodes. I start each day with a continuation of your entertaining and informative episodes and have already hooked a few friends. Yesterday I listened to the episode about the birth of your son and was really touched. I would love to be a child in your family. Best wishes and a thousand thanks! Su

Hey again teacher Luke 👋 I just want to add something, while I'm listening 🎧 to this episode you've mentioned that you might cut this episode in parts and so on .... But I believe it's totally okay to keep it one long episode, in fact we shouldn't mind but on the contrary, we should be thankful! And yes, it might be challenging to listen to the whole thing on one go, but that's where the technology comes, just like teacher Luke explained! Actually, I don't have the luxury to watch attentively on KZfaq, however; i find it soothing and therapeutic to listen while doing house chores after a long day at work! So I listen on Castbox, and whenever I wish , I stop and then carry on again whenever it's convenient 😀 So yeah 😊 With love and peace from Algeria 🇩🇿❤

Hi Luke!! I am one of your listeners from China. As you asked in the episode have any of us been here since the very beginning. My answer is yes! I absolutely love the your podcast and it's been being with me for all days since I started to learn spoken English. I didn't listen to your latest episode from the beginning, instead, I started from the very first. Now I just reach to the 286th episode The wedding episode. For me, it's just like I am doing some sort of time traveling every time I listen to the podcast. It's like I am with you but from the future. For most of the episodes, I will listen to them for up to 3 times and I must say it's really really helpful if your listen them again and again. Whoever asks me why I have a kind of British accent, I would recommend your podcast to them. Your podcast is really really helpful and informative. I enjoy listening to it because it's funny and they are great. Laughing at the jokes that you made years ago, which really makes me feel like I am an idiot when they are people around me. I can't fully express my gratitude. Hopefully, I could catch up with you by keeping on listening to the podcast. Thanks for your time and effort!! Sorry for so many words.

Whenever you are curious about checking out a Somatic Therapy approach to our nervous system I‘d be more than happy to show you what that is about. Hi Luke, thank you for this great new rambling episode, as enjoyable as always ! And congratulations for your stunning and well deserved KZfaq Gold Creator Award, it looks beautiful 😊 As requested, I’m pleased to enlighten you hereunder regarding the pronunciation of “Les Halles”. First, I think there is no need to worry about making pronunciation mistakes when learning a new language, it’s totally fine and normal. Who doesn’t ? Even in your native language ? It’s hard to know all the pronunciation rules by heart when learning a language and listening and speaking practice over and over again is the key to improving whatever the language you learn. In French, there are two types of word beginning with the letter 'h': those with a silent 'h' and those with an aspirated 'h'. The aspirated "h" prevents linking and elision. The difficulty in French is that the aspirated “h” is barely more audible than the silent "h"... Only the etymology can justified why a “h” is silent or aspirated… Words with a Latin origin would usually have a silent “h” and the Germanic origin gives an aspirated “h”… and according to the Littré dictionary, “la Halle” is coming from ancient high-German giving therefore an aspirated “h”. A word beginning with an aspirated "h" is never linked with the preceding word. Here's a little tip: to know whether it's a silent or an aspirated "h", look at the definite articles: "le / la" or " l' ". The words requiring the definite article " l' " are those beginning with a silent "h". This is for example the case for "l'histoire" (history), "l'huître" (oyster) or "l'homme" (man). For these words, the linking sound /z/ is added ; for instance you have to pronounce the “z” in "les /z/ histoires", "les /z/ huîtres", “les /z/ hommes”. The aspirated 'h' is found on words requiring the definite articles 'le/la'. This is for instance the case with the following words: "le hibou", "la hauteur", "le haricot" and… “la halle”. For these words no linking sound is required. No "n" should be pronounced when saying "un hibou" (owl) and no “z” should be pronounced when saying “des haricots” or "les halles”. I hope these explanations will help a little bit “pour éclairer les lanternes” 😊

Hey, Luke. For a long time, I didn't know what I was going to do with my life. I had a very troubled upbringing: my parents separated, I changed schools several times, which made me lose a year and led me to drop out of school and work in minimum wage jobs. I returned to studying years later. I've always considered myself somewhat intelligent, curious, tried to learn everything on my own, and enjoyed reading (digital books through illicit means, due to lack of money). However, the pressure from society to have a defined future, especially after graduating from high school so late and without specialization, was a burden. For a long time, I didn't have internet, downloaded content to watch offline and books because I thought if I had internet, I would get distracted and read less. But I always thought that if I did, I would learn English because I thought I could learn everything on my own. And that's how I started learning English by myself. With difficulty, I reached an ok level to consume basic things, but it was difficult to find interesting content. That's when I found you. Even with difficulty understanding you at first, I realized you were someone different and I identified with you. You're a person in your mid-40s who doesn't fit society's labels, because I feel you still have a childlike essence. You've developed adult responsibilities without being oppressed by society's restrictions. I see in you the passion of a child for things: music, comedy, movies. You speak in a natural way, without filters like "am I talking nonsense, will they take me less seriously?". That's when I realized I wanted to be like you because I love talking about things that interest me. And I found the common denominator: English, which I'm passionate about. That's when I decided to take the ENEM (National High School Exam, used as a selection criterion for universities in Brazil and provides access to college with discounts or entirely through the grades obtained on the test) again. I had already taken it and earned a laptop when I returned to studying; here in my state, if someone is in high school - like I was when I returned to studying - and gets a specific grade, they earn a laptop. A pause for you to see how I ramble as much as you do. I never thought I'd go to college because of my low self-esteem. My girlfriend has been helping change that in me (she's a psychologist). I didn't prepare well for the test. I didn't mention it, but I have terrible OCD, which greatly disrupted my routine, to the point where it took me two hours to shower and made me wash my hands several times throughout the day. I'm seeking treatment for this. Despite that, I tried to focus on the parts I'm better at, like the essay, which is one of the most important parts, and I scored 960 out of 1000 on the essay. I ranked first in two colleges to study English with 100% full scholarships. I'm happy to see you reaping your rewards and to be able to share with you today what you inspired me to do. I'll be an English teacher, just like you. I wanted to say more things like: I love seeing the relationship you have with your family members, the mature way you respect your daughter's world by talking to her as an equal, and how you preserve her space and, of course, her image. You're a role model to me. Thank you for everything and congratulations on one million subscribers!
