Interesting video. I heard about this possible tensioner problem just after I purchased my 05 Deluxe. I swapped out for the Screaming Eagle upgrade. Did the inner cam bearings at the same time.

The s&s 551 easy start cams are a great choice for that bike and can be used if he wants to throw bigger jugs on it later

I did a job similar to that on a Road King, during the research I was told it's wise to take the oil pan off (below the tranny) and clean it as well, I did. I used the screaming eagle upgrade kit that has hydraulic tensioners and a new oil pump, new lifters and adjustable pushrods. Bike had 95,000 kilometers on it.

Absolutely. Those pieces can move around quick haha. We did the SE cam plate and oil pump, and installed new OEM lifters. And pushrods were in good shape so we reused those.

Good candidate for Gear Drive! The run-outs within spec.

What happens before the tensioners go noise, sputtering popping lose of power what are the signs, my bike is losing power as soon as I put it in gear shuts down but idles fine. I have replaced fuel filter, fuel pump, plastic piece in there with the two ears that clip in place,new Voltage Regulator, battery. Still idles fine even give it gas soon as I put in gear it loses power cuts out and off starts right back up and does same someone help. Shops are all full in my area and backed up 3 months. Ranman

A lot of times when the tensioners let go like this one, they loose power and misfire. In extreme cases timing could jump and you could have a real issue inside the engine. To me, it sounds like the clutch isn’t disengaging all the way when you are putting it in gear, causing the stall. That would be the simplest solution anyway. Open the derby cover up and give it a good smell, you’ll know if your clutch plates are roasted. If they aren’t, adjust it at the basket and you might be back in action.

I'm doing this job as we speak.. I got everything almost put back together. I got the cams in timing. Then put the plate back on and the sprockets and chain put back on and in time. So I bolted her back up. Now just finishing the rockers. I'm in high gear and of course changed all the rings and gaskets. MY QUESTION IS... The bike should still be in time right since I got everything in the cam box lined up?? Or should I have opened the primary case up and lined that up too?
@GilstrapGarage2 жыл бұрын
As long as the marks on your cams line up, and then make sure your timing marks line up on the large and small gears, you’ll be in good shape!

@@GilstrapGarage what did I do wrong? All back together, started her up and lots of valve train noise and idle seems high... just doesn't sound right.. any ideas man? Relatively easy job is turning into a problem for me..
@GilstrapGarage2 жыл бұрын
@@Br0Viper did you change any valve train parts? (Adjustable pushrods, lifters, etc.) and if you did not change them, did you put them back in their original positions? The intake and exhaust pushrods are different lengths.
@Br0Viper2 жыл бұрын
@@GilstrapGarage I did not change anything. Everything is in order. I made sure of that one. That's why I'm stunned as to why I'm getting all this noise and odd idle. I took my time putting her back together.

is there a way to prevent that from happening?

The only way is to open up your cam chest and see what it looks like. If they are wearing down, then replace them early and save the headache!

Love garage mechanics great information 👍 one suggestion a tripod camera would be welcome felling a bit dizzy watching the fast camera sweeping otherwise 👌

they typically go bad around the 35k mark. this bike was closer to 45k at the time we caught it

How many miles on that bike. I have an 06 dyna that I’m getting paranoid about. lol. It has 25,000 on it.

I don’t remember off hand, but I believe it is just under 30k. My old softail broke the same way right at 35k. The hydraulic tensioner upgrade is so worth it!

I have an '04 Road King. I replaced the cam chain tensioners at 35,000. They were about half worn out. I'm now at 65,000 and going to change them again this winter. There are a lot of variables that determine wear and no two bikes are the same. A good rule of thumb is to open the cam chest and visually inspect them every 20,000.
@GilstrapGarage3 жыл бұрын
@@charlesdavis9755 absolutely! Have you considered switching to the hydraulic tensioners? It may not be critical for you because it sounds like you take good care of your bike 😃

Heres the truth of it. Thats cam chain doesnt need that tensioner and it can be taken off. But go ahead people and believe lies, as they were only a sonic sound deadener. Also the crank shaft gear did not walk a bit as the guy said, those are repair shop lies

🤣 you caught me 🥸 definitely just taking my friends money for changing parts, not for the sake of keeping their machines running smooth and correct. Tag my channel in your video when your chain jumps, changes your valve timing, and your valves become 1 with your pistons. I’d like to leave a wild comment about how Harley designed the bike with too many unnecessary parts.
