A 1997 Catalina 380 Sailboat for sale is our pick this week. The only downside is that this sailboat sold as we were stepping off of her. Not to worry, there are others classic cruising sailboats on the market at the same price. Check out the great ergonomics in the aft stateroom!!

Hello Captain .Boy I haven't seen one of those in a long time back in the late 80's early 90's I use to haul boats with a semi for a living ,I moved a lot of Catalina's big and small and I remember when that keel was the latest and greatest thing .many a'time I would have to wait till the next day to load but thy would allow me to watch them build them , It was great when a customer would ask a question about their boat and I could answer it . AAH those were the days .

@@rfunk727 I would not hesitate to do the blue water. My only downfall with the 380 is the high freeboard can be difficult to dock in windy conditions. I love the headroom in the cabin being 6'4".

As an owner of a 1999 380 7' fin keel model, Captain Q certainly hit on all the features that make this an excellent boat, but he missed one... it sails as great as its aesthetics. It's heavy so she needs about 10 knots of wind to get it going, but we've sailed it in 35 knot gusts with a little main and a little Genoa out and were completely in control and very comfortable. Parts are available and reasonably priced, and while I have spent a lot of time and money upgrading her, that was all a personal preference and by no means mandatory. Thanks for the review.

Let me expand on your story: About 1962, Frank Butler ordered a Victory 21 from Hank McCuen (who, as a comedian, has credit for inventing the laugh track on his comedy show in 1950, it’s in Wikipedia) The sail emblem for the Victory was a checkered flag (and still is, I see them race as a large fleet in San Diego) following the horse race theme to his boat line names Hank liked to imbibe a little, and play the ponies so his boat deposits often didn’t go where they should have Eventually Frank built his own Victory 21 in Hanks factory, which was the old Ford factory on Terminal Island, California. Frank found he was good at boat building so he founded Catalina Yachts and built many good boats, like the Coronados, Catalinas, and a lot of Victory 21s Hank continued building boats, he had a talent for fiberglass, however the Victory was his best looking boat. His boats were called, Thoroughbred, Champion, and finally Yorktown The Yorktowns were built like no other boat. He’d sell them at any stage of completion (like he did with Butler, which was one way to get it finished) The keel was hollow. The completed boat, if it ever was completed, was launched at “Eddies,” (which is still there) just down the channel from the old Ford plant, where it floated on its side Ballast was added until it floated level, then the cement truck backed up and filled the hollow keel and bilge until it floated on its lines. Hank took the completed boats weight distribution seriously, almost all boats float galley side down a bit, because it’s heavier than the dinette opposite. Not the Yorktowns Yorktowns were visually challenged, as all his designs were, but incredibly strong Hank helped invent fiberglass boat building He was among the first to use a spade rudder and fin keel (victory 21) You still see Yorktown in anchorages all over the world, as they are very inexpensive, capable, and, stronger than anything you could hit When I met Hank, he was laying up a Yorktown 42, by himself, at age 80. An amazing guy I was looking for a place to build a wood dinghy Hank let me use his shop for free, probably like he let Frank Butler and countless others. Search out Yorktowns and see his legacy Some are very nice Some, not so much Backyards all over Southern Cal and beyond still have partially built Yorktown 32s and 41s rumor has it that Hark used sail dimensions on some boats that were shared by other designs, allowing used sails to be found easily and cheaply

Another great exploration of a well priced sailboat. I want to see this channel continue to grow, you two deserve it. As for boat, the engineer in me loves the design consideration on the interior, extracting space where others do not. The hull design would never meet my desire but I appreciate it for what it is and does, where appropriate. It is pretty Kewl that this one sold before the video was done. :D

...also....that Keel.....being an Aussie, we got huge media coverage of the Perth Yacht Club pinching the cup from you guys. First time ever the Americas Cup went off shore, and it was THAT keel that caused all the stir. You showed a pick with a skirt around the finned keel. All the secrecy and hype was like a cross between James Bond and a party trick. Kind of MI5 meets Get Smart. But it was That keel that caught the worlds attention and brought the name of Ben Lexcen To every bodies lips. (And his design to the keels of many other boats, like we see here).

I belong to a sailing club out here in Southern California. They have a fleet of privately own boats in six different marinas from San Diego to Oxnard. This gives the sailor many options to sail a variety of boats. My favorite boat has become the Catalina 36. They call that a "sugar scoop" transom. It's really nice especially with davits.

My vote: I would sleep head forward in that aft cabin, just like I did in the C&C 37R( really a 40 footer.) Although that interior finish is in another league given the molded interior. That is/was a really good find on the newer side of your character. Kudos! PS I’m trying to identify a scotch to fit with the celebratory bubbles and meal;-)

I know this might be going too far....Sea Goat? (Woof)! Ooooh, don’t think Sea Dog approves. Forget the haters, keep your thing kwirky, it’s so very charming. J. PS...after some light editing the name Red Dog kept coming up in my mind. Fellas, if you haven’t seen the Aussie film Red Dog, your in for a treat. She gets an 18! Ten for watchable, 4 for pace and story, 4 for Red Dog, you can’t help hut laugh and cry by the life and times of this canine gentleman. Really worth a look.

What a great layout and it looks in really nice condition, but whenever I see sleeping arrangements on boats where there's very little height over the bed the first thing that comes into my head is how much that's going to limit the positions of "conjugal activity".....I think I need therapy! 😁

Those horizontal wings on the keel won't give lift. They are upside down wings (compared to a plane) so they'll have a downward force; like the spoiler on the back of a car. The force is downward because the distance under the keel-wing is longer than the distance across the top causing the water molecules under the keel-wing to spread out as they travel a further distance; and thereby causing a 'vacuum' which the comparatively more compacted water molecules above the keel-wing try to fill by pushing down through the wing, and in this case causing downward 'lift'.

I'm curious to know what a fair price on one of these is in that condition which I think it would be hard to find better? Thanks for the tour and definitely one that called out to me...

There were 2 on the market at that price... and of course, the asking price is just the start of a conversation... you just never know how eager the seller is...

18:30 Head for or Aft?]. Head towards midships at sea to reduce perceived motion from pitching - if you care about that kind of thing.

@@YachtHunters Actually, it is a science based though. The closer you keep you inner ears to the gyrecenter of your yacht - that imaginary point where your yachts motions are centered - the less the accelerations your sense of equilibrium are going to be disturbed and cause you upset. So, basically, aft cabins and forward cabins are out at sea. If you look at traditional yachts, from say before 1980, why did they all strive to stack as many berths as possible amidships? That is why. A forward v-berth, you would only sleep there in port - unless you want to be seasick.

Hey Captain Q - great video, no sea dog today though. But another Aussie reference, you have theme going on here. I'm curious as to why this would not be a Bluewater sailing boat. Is it the lack of rudder and prop skeg /protection? Weight? It looks like a very comfortable boat for extended trips. The thing I like about this boat is it looks low maintenance, so more sailing time, v's fixing time.

Lower volume water and fuel tanks. Lighter gauge construction and rigging. My guesses.

When you were laying in the aft berth under the cockpit sole. I'm wondering to myself, _if the ocean/sea decides to dump a big wave into the cockpit_ where are the scuppers ? Assume just 2 on aft end of cockpit sole ? An it's a little tight, hopefully no head injuries
