This brief video shows testing a cast bullet load in 8mm Mauser using an 8mm Carcano carbine. The bullet being tried is the Lyman 323470 with a 17 grain charge of Alliant 2400 powder.

First time I see such loading technique. Cool

It would be better if I had one of the 3d printed single shot adapters, but lacking one of those my approach keeps the extractor from getting busted.

Shawn, you should do a live chat some night, have a few beers and catch up. That looks pretty promising, I really like Cast bullets and playing around with the accuracy you can get out of them, It's a special type of fun in crafting ammunition and once you have a load, you can make a large stock of ammunition for a constable savings. Peace dude. - Dave

I need to recreate this load and see how it perform out of my Husqvarna Mauser 8mm sporter. I should talk to Scott and see if he would be interested in running a chat, it's been too long since we did one.

@@314299 A chat would be great. One thing i like about your Chanel, you shoot Wood and Blued steel guns. there is something (I know there are things about it that are an advantage) however, Plastic just don't do it for me anymore and the craftmanship of a fine stock just makes the rifle pop! - Dave

Thanks for the video. I have a 1936 mauser k98 that has an oversized bore. At 100yd its all over the target. I bought a Lee mould to try to cast oversize bullets. The rifling is plenty deep enough if the bullet is big enough to grab it. I really evjoy your videos 👍

I only have two 8mm moulds, the Lee and the Lyman used in the video. The Lyman works so well I rarely ever break out the Lee one. Bullet fit in old military rifles can certainly be an issue, bigger is usually better. The great thing about this 8mm Carcano is that the bore is basically in new condition, and seems to be well within specification.

Yeah and this load shoots at least on the target, if a bit high and left. Jacketed loads shoot super high.

Good shooting with the cast lead load, 2400 is one of my favorite powders for cast bullets in my old surplus rifles, low recoil, economical and just plain accurate. I see they have those adapters on eBay for around $15 US.

2400 is certainly one of the old reliable cast bullet powders, one of the most useful ones for sure, As for the single shot adapters I've looked at them before before but they would not ship up here. Perhaps It is time to have another look.

Great load, Shawn! I'm glad someone mentioned your name because I had forgotten it; sorry! I've been loading cast bullets lately in 8x57, .303 Brit and .30-06, using 10.5 grains of "Swede Gallery Powder" in all. Are you familiar with it?

Is that is the powder used in the Swedish wood core 6.5x55 gallery loads? I've head that one can load it with Unique data.

I love Carcanos (I know that's an odd statement...), but not sure I would trust the 8mm conversions - I really don't know that much about them. Ever have any issues with pressure? Brassing on the bolt? Interesting video, as always.
@314299
@314299 5 ай бұрын
While the original Carcano action is plenty strong it certainly can be argued that the 8mm conversions are weaker than the original unmodified actions due to the machining required to get the 8mm round to fit. Personally I would not shoot surplus 8mm or any of the full power European specification 8mm in one of these conversions. In my 8mm Carcano i've shot mostly cast bullet reloads and a few of the PPU 139 grain load as it is quite mild. I would also consider the American type 170 grain loads to be OK in these as well as they are only doing about 2350. I've never had any pressure issues with mine with the loads I use.

Interesting leading technique. What's the advantages, compared to loading from the magazine.
@314299
@314299 5 ай бұрын
The Carcano uses "en block" chargers that are inserted into the magazine and act as the magazine feed lips. The 8mm Mauser will fit or work in a 6.5 or 7.35 mm Carcano charger. Because of this I cannot load it from the magazine as "proper" 8mm chargers are basically impossible to get. Hand feeding the round into the chamber also does not work as the extractor will not "jump" the rim of the chambered round.

I made a comment on another video you posted. The video with the fly….. you know the video I’m talking about lol. Anyhow in that video the Remington made a very similar group. 3 really tight shots then 2 opened the group. WHY does that happen it happens to me all the time. Sometimes it’s even worse I’ll get 4 that are within a inch of each other. Then the 5th shot turns the whole thing into a 3 or 4 inch group. And it infuriates me because I put so much effort into my cast reloads. And I cannot figure out what causes this. Should I just be happy with the 4 shot groups???? What do you do??? Do you go back to the drawing board and try to figure out what happened. Or are you satisfied with your results.
@314299
@314299 5 ай бұрын
I wish I knew the answer as to why that happens but I dont. In reality a seven or ten shot group would be even more honest as to the ability of a given load.
@jamespollard1670
@jamespollard1670 5 ай бұрын
I've found that when you get 3 or 4 really tight with a flyer or 2 , I can reduce the flyer with and adjustment to the oal . I reduce the oal in .005 increments until it hits the sweet spot . I struggled with flyer problem with my cast 223 and 300 blackout . When I increased the bullet jump in small increments the cast 223 will do inside 1 1/2 " and the cast 300 just under an inch now at 100 . There's an optimum powder charge as is an optimum seating depth .
