In a break from traditional protocol, Queen Elizabeth II of Great Britain ordered the change to the daily ceremonial parade to show solidarity with the United States in the wake of the 9-11 attacks. Prince Andrew, representing his mother, was joined by the US ambassador to Britain, William Farish, for the 45-minute ceremony.
As the band of the Coldstream Guards began the US national anthem hundreds in the crowd sang along while others wept, before observing a two-minute silence.
An incredible moment for both nations

She was certainly a Monarch that sets the benchmark in modern times for others to follow. Classy, respectable and even her previous Colonial subjects in the US loved her. She even played our National Anthem, a song about overcoming relentless British attack and persevering, in front of Buckingham Palace on 9/11 out of solidarity for her best ally. She also put boots to ground in WW2 as a truck driver so she wasn't quite the sheltered princess which to me is just respect. Tough lady and from what I can tell a good, honest and caring Monarch. Not sure there will ever be one like her again.

I'll never forget this beautiful *gesture of love* by *Queen Elizabeth* on 9/11/01. It touched so many Americans hearts to have our Mother-Country (France being our other) play the U.S.A. national anthem! Americans often feel ridiculed by the world for airing our dirty-laundry, laughing at ourselves, being silly while not apologizing for it, but Great Britain probably understands that more than any other nation (i.e. Benny Hill, Rowan Atkinson "Mr. Bean", Charlie Chaplin, Monty Python, etc.). The reason this was done wasn't because of some silly reciprocation between two countries, its because we truly are brothers and sisters in arms. Yes we both played a part in a war that, (even saying this as an englishman) gave birth to the most powerful nation on earth, but its not because of that. Together we laid waste to tyranny across entire continents that would dare to endanger the freedoms that we both hold dear to our hearts and long may it continue. We may be the rebellious son who ran away from home in an emotional outburst, but we're still family, and when the time came.. We welcomed each other with open arms. Be it a great war, be it the spread of ideologies, or be it a tragedy. We were there when london was under siege from the sky, and you were there when operations began for normandy. You were there when the cold war reached it's peaks, and you were there during one of america's darkest hours. Through thick and thin, and despite the differences between our countries and cultures, we are family. A disjointed and, perhaps, sometimes comedically dysfunctional family, but family nonetheless! And as a southerner, I hope that one day we get to sit down and show you guys some of our homemade sweet tea. You'd probably love it, and we'd probably enjoy the change of pace of having tea with cream and biscuits. ^^

@@ryanklugh3668 Ryan, I can not even begin to describe my feelings at this sad time in our history. I fought in Vietnam, Granada, Panama, Desert Shield / Storm and retired in 1994. Shortly after graduating from Parris Island ( a few weeks ), I was walking through the Atlanta airport, proud as I could be to be a Marine and a young woman came up and spit on me and called me a baby killer. Imagine how hard it was not to react adversely to that. That disrespect was common then due to Vietnam. When I returned from Desert Storm, flew in on a C-5 landed at Dover to refuel. Everyone had to get off. They bused us to a hangar where they said we could shower and shave. As we walked in the door we found it full of civilians forming an aisle down the middle to the opposite corner where a vet was waving a large flag and they began to sing, " I am proud to be an American ". Myself and the 5 others with me that had served in Vietnam were on our knees crying to have lived to see the change. But this political environment and SJW's are much worse in my opinion. I think more than anything else social media is to blame. People can make horrible comments without having to worry about someone punching their lights out. Manners are pretty much out the window.

I was barely an adult when our world turned upside down that September morning; and, my heart aches every time I remember. It really was/has been a solace to see our allies stand in support and weep with us. 21 Septembers later, millions of hearts are aching; not because of a tragic event or crisis, but in knowing a beloved queen is gone. Regardless of the divisive rhetoric, the misleading calamity, the tribal & ideological war and unnecessary violence that ravishes our societies today, there is still so much good to acknowledge: Shortly after our grandfathers laid down their lives; or, returned home from blood-soaked battlefields so that we can live ‘our’ own lives, a young princess still grieving the loss of her father stepped up and gave ‘her’ life over to serve her country and its people - for the remaining 70 years of it. Regardless of opinion, or why people make these sacrifices is trivial in these moments - we all hold a piece of this world and it’s what we do with it that defines our character. Such profound respect can be held for anyone who would give so much of themselves Queen Elizabeth did live long. Now, may her legacy continue. Sending love and condolences to her Royal House and the people of Britain. 🇬🇧 ❤️🇬🇧 🇺🇸

Went to the flight 93 crash site today. I was in tears. I’ll never forget that day. Being near Philly (in between nyc and dc and not so far from flight 93 crash) it felt like the world was ending. I felt righteous anger. And seeing people in certain countries laughing and cheering as I watched my countrymen jump 1,000 feet to their deaths to avoid burning alive was devastating. Then the Brits did this for us. They mourned with us. 67 Brits died on US soil on 9/11. We will never forget...the attack but also who our friends were in that horrible moment.

Many of these people are American tourists who happened to be in London during the attacks, they gathered at Buckingham Palace for comfort and companionship. The UK cared about and cried with our American cousins. It was an attack on all nations and an attack on the very liberty that the UK has fought many battles to preserve.

I was 16 when 9/11 happened, and being homeschooled, I saw the planes hit, the whole thing. It was so painful, it shocked us all out of our former perceived realities. I also remember watching this moment outside the palace on tv and crying my eyes out. It was so comforting and healing to know how much we were supported, and how much our allies also grieved over our fallen. God bless you all, and long live the Queen! 🇺🇸❤️🇬🇧
