WATERPROOF ADHESIVE INSTEAD OF THINSET FOR KERDI???-- Using Ardex 8+9 to Install Kerdi

In Germany, Schluter requires Kerdi Membrane to be adhered with Kerdi-Coll-L waterproof adhesive to be used in place of unmodified thinset mortar when attaching seams of membrane. Ardex also requires this same method for using their SK-175 polyethylene sheet membrane when in a submerged or commercial steam shower application. Both Kerdi-Coll-L and Ardex 8+9 are a two component reactive cement powder plus acrylic liquid that when mixed together form a waterproof cementitious adhesive or membrane. I'm not sure if Kerdi-Coll and Ardex 8+9 are the exact same formula, but they are very similar if they are not.
I also go one step further, I protect all horizontal areas with another full layer of Ardex 8+9 over the Kerdi membrane for added protection. I like to treat all of my shower pans as a "submerged application", because there may be instances where water sits for long periods of time. But that's just me.

I really enjoy your videos, have learned a lot in preparing to waterproof and tile our 48 x 60 curbless shower. I got the walls nice and flat prior to waterproofing with Kerdi Membrane, and today I used Ardex 8+9 on all corners and banding, and especially right around the Kerdi drain as I see that can be a problem area.. Tomorrow it will get a couple of coats of Ardex 8+9 over it all, it should now meet submarine specs! I like your videos and style of teaching, very enjoyable and educational.

Thanks for showing this. DIY my failed shower and have invested a lot of time watching your videos. Long story short..ex-husband didn't use waterproofing when he made the shower and failed after 5 yrs (all the way to substrate and floor beams). I replaced all the bad wood and installed a Schluter T shower pan, schluter mortar and strips..and it failed the water test. I ripped out the stripping and saw where the leaks were...i let dry for 3 wks with fan..and ordered Ardex 8 plus 9 since they don't sell in IL..installed the strips with Ardex and then waterproofed w Ardex -2 layers..and it passed the 30 hrs water test today! Thank you so much for all ur videos and sharing your knowledge.

That overlap kills it for me man. Did a 42 shower hotel in 3 phases. First they specd durok under kerdi but the walls were too jacked. 2nd and 3rd phases were kerdi over mud. By the time we got to phase 3 we had it dialed in. We’d chamfer back the mud where our kerdi overlaps were.....worked great!!

I grabbed some 8+9 to overcoat my Kerdi install after watching some of your test videos. This idea really makes sense to me and I think using thinset to place my pan and curb, then do all the membrane seams with 8+9 will be a much better solution. In the next week or so I'll be doing the same thing here at home and will do a 2nd floor flood test on it. Maybe it's the late night bourbon, but your videos really inspire confidence! Thanks for taking the time to do them!

How did the flood test go
@smsauce
@smsauce 4 жыл бұрын
@@mattjudy6780 I had 3 pinholes right along the edge of the banding that leaked somewhere between 15 and 19 hours. Here is a link to that part: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/kLajdNunrt7Oiac.html I thought that I went too thin with the Ardex between layers, so tested both Ardex 8+9 and Schluter All-Set with my possibly too thin application and with a v-notch: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/qp56mdl6vbSrqHk.html It restored my confidence in the Ardex and I think I just had a small section that wasn't fully bonded. This probably allowed airflow to create the pinholes before the Ardex cured, so of course they would also have a leak path. I can't really settle on what is best since it's my first go round as a home owner and not a pro, but I think with my additional coats over the pin holes, then another coat on the pan I will be just fine. I'll be flooding again tomorrow morning for another 24 hour test after the remediation.

LOVE your videos! I personally like to watch and learn and do it myself in my home, however, I have taken both the levels of Schluter courses. Before I knew what I now know I hired a guy who was supposed to be the best in town, having done tile prep and tile setting in town for over 20 years. He charged me a fortune for what I now know is absolutely shit work. I don't even use the shower because of it. :( I will do my upstairs bathroom myself after as much education and practice as I can get because the best person to do your reno is you... IF... you want to make sure it's done right. Sadly someone who is supposedly professional doesn't have the vested interest in doing an immaculate job. Sure for some people who have never worked with these materials or similar ones, a professional is the way to go, however, you have to know what to demand from the professional for your money and watch them every step of the way. You help educate the public which is a massive service. THANK YOU!!

I've watched a lot of your videos and it seems that regardless of the material used behind the membrane, It seems that the fleece on the face of the membrane allows water a way to escape. You could probably still use thinset to bond the joints, but you would need to seal the very outer edge with a waterproofer like 8+9, red-guard, HydroBan, etc.

I am getting ready to tile a shower for the first time- I have been a carpenter for over 25 years so I have general knowledge and understanding of these systems - but where I am confused is this- Should I not use Schluter All Set for my Kerdi band and seams in the shower? I am installing Kerdi Board to the walls and the Kerdi membrane over my pre-slope on the floor- I had planned to use AllSet everywhere. I want to get this right the first time and have no problems down the road. Interesting that you compared 8+9 to truck bed liner. I had Rhino Liner sprayed in my truck bed 20 years ago and it's held up amazingly well. It's a polyurethane material and it's nearly indestructible and certainly waterproof. I was wondering if that stuff or something like it might work to cover a shower floor instead of tile. Or would 8+9 be tough enough? I really don't love tile...all those seams. And I don't need it to be pretty. What do you think?

I agree 100% and i neved understood why kerdi is instructed to overlap seams in the method that they do. Makes so much more sense to first kerdi membrane the pan. Then overlap everything from the ground up so that way all seams overlap in a way that the water flow never flows directly into any seams. I just dont get why nobody does it that way? If a roof was wrapped like kerdi it would be immediate failure. The kerdi overlap method puts way too much confidence in their technology that the two membranes will 100% interlock between the thinset. If you overlap from bottom up so water sheds over then you never have to worry. I just dont get it.

Agreed. Only time i would use a kerdi membrane is on the tub walls and run the membrane horizontal continuous all 3 sides and overlap the upper section and there is your shingling. This way thinset has no role in water proofing. Membrane itself is waterproof we already know that. I think running the membrane vertical with 4" overlap is fine on the tub walls. But I would never use this product in a custom shower base.

Im not a pro tile installer, and have way less knowledge than this guy in tile installation, but I'm with ya on that. As someone who isn't a tiler there might be a reason, but when ever I've done something to run water away, I've started at the bottom, so all overlaps will run the water over the lower part and away. This seems to just go on Willy nilly and I guess relies on the 8 +9 forming a watertight bond. Probably just over thinking it I guess

As I watch various videos using thinset (or other bonding material like Ardex 8+9) to waterproof these waterproof membrane seams, I cannot help but wonder why the "standard process" is to work the thinset into the non-fleece side of the membrane, then press the fleece into that. It would seem that the best process would be to work it into the fleece side. I realize this would be much more difficult! The normal process seems to mimic tiling without back buttering tiles which usually results in a lack of wetting of the tile. If the fleece side is not fully wet, I think water would follow the fleece through the seam.

Since Kerdi Fix doesn’t seal to the back of Kerdi Band, what do you recommend to fill the bottom edge of Kerdi Board to the top of a tub?

Isaac, What am I missing? I must be mixed up. I see you use Kerdi, and Denshield, but then chicken wire and wall mud. Does the wall mud go on after the Kerdi?

You need 2 trowels to install band and corners one to hold it in place and one to embed the kerdi into the thinset

Hey Isaac. I love watching your videos not planning on doing a tile shower anytime soon but love watching your work and this project coming together. I do have one question. Why no waterproofing along where the shower seat meets the wall by the window? @53:30?

At around 54:43 there seems to be a bubble or something along the wall bottom edge? Will this jeopardize the integrity of the waterproof seal?

So why did you only use the Ardex for seams instead of for the entire installation of the Kerdi if it's the best waterproof product? Should I get the Ardex to put the Kerdi on the wall as well?

Dude, I just finished installing Kerdi board and taping the seams and screw holes with Kerdi tape with an unmodified mortar.... It doesn't look waterproof! Can I roll red guard over the mortar and seems to water proof?
