Watched the 917 race at Hockenheim in 1971 from the pits. It was very impressive.

Fans at the 1973 Laguna Seca Can-Am got to watch Penske Racing do a 917/30 engine change in the open paddock, in the few hours between Sunday's first heat and main event. It was quite an evolution, every team member was involved including the owner. They finished the job in much less time than it's done back at the shop! The Unfair Advantage is not just about machinery, but people.

the exhaust system is still mounted on the engine on this video. from 8.10 you can see clearly the 2 brown pipes at the right and left of the flywheel and a part of the spaghetti manifold.

i have to tell you the wait was worth it, we cuold see how tricki it is to get the engine out. when we had to pull out the engine of 91710016 we did not have the pivoting device , and that is new to me that it existed so now i need one. thanks kevin vor the hat storry you and sharon are a great friends!

As he said it's a second alternator--- 24 hr race, backup systems needed, it would take a lot of time to replace.

And probably the strangest engine Porsche ever created. They rushed to develop it; only two months development work went into the engines which powered the original twenty-five 917s.

Those three bolts don't hold the engine in the car, they keep the car from falling off the engine! The fuel injection pump looks like a monster! Is that for all twelve cylinders, or is there another one on the opposite side?

Having burnt a few vw cases and mercedes Magnesium fans on the bbq I am sure i wouldn't have used a blow lamp. heat guns work pretty good though .(think of big hairdryer)

It has been reported the normal 917 accelerates from 0 to 100 mph in 4 seconds. That will work for me.
