today we'll do a reaction to the motorweek retro review of the '92 Buick Roadmaster!
Back in the day, this was the dream for me, an upgrade from my Buick Regal and Master Of The Road.....
How does it hold up to looking back through history?

I am torn between the Roadmaster and the Park Avenue Ultra for similar reasons that you mentioned. They were 2 different cars. I admire both for their differences.

I had a friend in high school who drove his grandparent's old Buicks one being a early 90's Roadmaster and the other being a 60's LeSabre (really stood out in the parking lot lol). I got a chance to ride in the Roadmaster (had the red interior), have to say the most plush/comfortable seats that I have ever sat in my life.

This car had to be middle of the road. Because it had, like you said, Cadillac above it and Chevy below it. The middle brands that used to be part of the 'ladder up' though a company's brands was starting to become obsolete at this point. Just like Olds(mobile), Ford's Mercury line, Chrysler's Plymouth line. I would have been interested in a Roadmaster...mostly because of the size inside and I'm taller.

I've always been a huge fan of these Roadmasters. My first car was a 1990 Oldsmobile Ninety Eight Regency Brougham so you already know I'm a fan of the full size(ish), cushy ride, bench seat GM highway cruisers. I always saw this car as what the '91 Ninety Eight should have been, a return to RWD body on frame traditional luxury...hell this car represents what I really wanted my FWD V6 Olds to be. Almost pulled the trigger on a nice, not mint, '95 RM sedan, but people always want too much, thinking they can get the $$ the 80s box GM B bodies get, and that hasn't been the case with these rounded 90s B bodies, yet. Maybe one day I can own one and experience what I've yearned for all these years. Great video as always Jon.

350 cubic inches and 190 bhp, pretty dern good 30 years ago! I heard that in the mid 90s the Buick Roadmaster got a de-tuned version of the LT1 Corvette engine, which I'm sure improved ET's on Motorweek's acceleration tests. I'll take a Roadmaster with the Vette engine!

I liked these Roadmasters, but would have picked a later model with the upgraded LT1 V8. Nevertheless my ultimate preference at this time would have been more sporty luxury sedan such as an Oldsmobile Aurora.

Great comments All Cars. Too many commenters don’t get it. This road master was terrible in its day. Gm screwed up. They could have addressed the glaring quality issues and it would have been much better. The 92 accord (which cost about the same) did not have a wiper stalk feeling like crap. The lift over for the trunk was user unfriendly. The old school technology (350 v8, rwd, etc.) was retro cool in 92, and I actually preferred that, plus 20 mpg was a big improvement over 70s full sized rwd gm cars. It was the getting the middle finger from gm that hurt. The entire interior was rickety. The customer could remember 20 years earlier when gm cared enough to make the trim pleasant to use/feel. Japan treated its customers with respect.

I love the Aurora and Roadmaster Wagon of the 90s, they're bright spots in the GM lineup in my opinion. In defense of the horsepower, the 5.7TBI engine was pretty old, even by this point; It was phased out in 1994 in the Roadmaster in favor of the LT1, which made much more power and got better economy and can be more easily upgraded to make power.

Back when this car was new, my friends and I used to laugh at the Buick Roadmaster (calling it the Roadmonster), but I secretly wanted one, in particular a woody wagon. Even today I'd still like one, but not as a daily driver, maybe as a weekend car or part of a large collection. I know this is based on (and looks/is better than the Caprice) with its chassis, powertrain, and transmission dating back to 1977 when they were "downsized" and held out until 1996, nearly two decades! Yes, the FWD Park Avenue was more modern but I think GM was afraid to let go of full size RWD cars for the older buyers who were not yet on the modern FWD car bandwagon.

We would have been great friends in the 90s. My dream car then was an El Dorado, Seville or Aurora. The idea with this car was that space is equal to luxury - big for big sakes. A Dodge Caravan made better use of space than this car.

The 1994-1996 Roadmasters were the best ones. The iron-block LT1 V8(260hp) was the best engine used in the Roadmaster(and the Caprice, Impala SS, and Fleetwood). It's a shame the Oldsmobile Custom Cruiser wagon never got that LT1 V8 engine. It would have been great.

I had a 92 Grand Marquis that trounced the Roadmaster in practically every way. Only thing I didn't really like about it was the auto leveling rear air suspension.

At least you could get the Roadmaster in a wagon which added a lot of utility over the sedan only Park Ave.

Yeah, you can say that the power of the early throttle body roadmasters werent very powerful, but they did have positrack, unlike the '94 -'96 roadmaster so i heard (not counting the wogons which did have posi). The 1994 to 1996 roadmasters had more power with the corvette lt1, with corvette aluminum heads, the horsepower would jump from 260 to 300, with the corvette cam, the power would be that of a corvette and sprint 4.9 0-60 and 13s in the quarter mile, i wouldnt underestimate these cars, there are people who still dont know about the roadmaster and Cadillac fleetwood

The little dainty gauges were a buick staple at the time. The 85+ Electra/Lesabre had small gauges as well, pushed way up high in the dash. Their Oldsmobile 88/98 counterparts had a way better gauge/dash design. I love Buick but never understood the small gauges, especially considering the other divisions had bigger and more attractive gauge clusters, so it's obvious Buick did it on purpose. Odd decision. Later in the 90s, Buick old employ the opposite philosophy, with giant gauges with oversized numbers, like the 97+ Century/Regal and others.

The Roadmaster was not developed as a sport sedan! It was meant for people who like large vehicles and lots of room! It wasn't a complete failure! It was supposed to appeal to older buyers! It succeeded at that! Young people were better served with a BMW or a Lexus!

This was not a Lexus competitor. Buick was never meant to challenge BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Lexus, or Infiniti. GM had Cadillac for that. This was for the older people who didn't want to give up the big American car. I would actually feel safer in this car than the Acura Legend at the time.

If I was going to pick a classic vehicle go on a road trip in, one of my choices would actually be the 1991-96 Buick Roadmaster wagon, especially the later ones with the LT1 engine. It's luxurious, comfortable, roomy, and pretty cool.

I think your being a tad hard on the Old Road Master. You cannot help but compare vintage cars with the modern vehicles we have today. In other words theirs no comparison. No one really makes a bad vehicle today. . People who buy late sixties to early seventies Chevelle's love those cars but frankly they don't stop or handle very well. Most family sedans can also outrun them. Technology is a beautiful thing. The old Road Master actually drove way better then most cars from the seventies and eighties. Just going to fuel injection was huge. The worse fuel injection is better then the best carburetor. One thing about the domestic auto industry is they could make a decent Big car. They did it for decades until the markets started to change. Anyway, if someone wants a Road Master get the version with the LT1 V8. It totally changes the dynamic of the car and actually made it pretty quick especially in the nineties. Cheers!!!
