#93 - Fluke 199C scopemeter repair

Two 199C units were picked up on eBay for parts. Both are incomplete, but one is more so. The other one was repaired. A keypad board was designed and manufactured. Despite of a silly mistake, this first version turned out to be usable. The second unit also shows some hope, but it needs a memory module and a power connector. It also features a very ugly spot on its LCD. And both units need batteries, so, perhaps, yet another li-ion battery upgrade is coming. Hopefully.

Awesome repair! Just for the sake of completeness: I bought the keypad PCB replacement for my Fluke 93 from the eBay seller you showed. So if DIY is not an option, I can recommend his product. It is not cheap, but may be the most economic solution, especially as Fluke told me to scrap the 93 and just buy a new scopemeter.

I love when a channel puts value on second-hand gear and so one can relate, as most people watching such videos often also have an appetite for attractive deals., and always informative to get an idea of what defects units go for around the globe. well done channel holder, impressive to see how you challenge these problems..

Flexible PCBs are now readily available, from the Chinese board houses. I even saw the button to select it, on your screen shot of your PCB supplier. I don't know what it would have cost, but it is available from that board house. Also, if I remember correctly, Dave/EEVBlog did a video on how to order custom flexible keypads. The process was much like ordering a board. If you end up ordering more foils, either of those options might be somewhat better than the thin, but somewhat rigid(?), material that you used this time. I am not finding fault, here. I am just making suggestions. Your repairs are wonderful. Thanks for your efforts to share with us.

Great, would never have thought about making a thin PCB myself for the keypad, but you've made me want to try it! Also, you could 3D print a shroud for the fan but I totally agree that it doesn't matter, given its just moving air inside the case. Thanks again for another great video.

Sir, you just gave me a new hope on my 199C. Down here in south america I was told by the techs in the official Fluke repair shop that I should get a new one, which is too much expensive around here. Mine doesn't start anymore and before that the keys stopped working too. Great content you are doing there. Thank you very much!

I replaced my Fluke199C keypad about 8 years ago, and it is still working 100% till this day. The original ones had a problem with breakthrough conductance... The battery pack I've remade myself a few times. For my Fluke 434 too. Far cheaper to do that. That pcb keypad looks wonderful! Well done.

Speaking of surplus equipment, my LeCroy 9410 came from Hughes Aircraft in California where I believe it was only used for one year and sat on a shelf for nearly thirty. I received it in fully working condition. It only needed a bit of cleanup on the front panel connectors and a small adjustment of the ADC gain on one channel which was done in software.

How common is the channel ASIC failure? I have a 196 that neither channel works on. There is no click from the relays during power up or dc to ac coupling switch. Oddly enough they will click if I start a probe calibration. Not even noise from the backlight on the display. I’m am trying to determine if it is the channel ASIC or one of the main ones.

I have just realized that there is an easy fix: use a flatflex with contacts on the opposite sides like this: www.digikey.com/product-detail/en/686715100001/732-5128-ND/4573356/

In this case the units were listed as "For parts or not working" with no other information. There is always some risk.
