An unprecedented insight into the London Ambulance Service, from the highly-pressurised control room to the crews on the streets, Ambulance provides an honest 360-degree snapshot of their daily dilemmas and pressures.
Episode two joins the staff in the nerve-centre control room on the night shift, when amongst the thousands of calls they receive, they also have to contend with hoaxers, frequent callers and run-away patients. At one point, 125 patients are waiting for assistance and the ambulance allocators are forced to prioritise the sickest patients, even if that means bumping others down the queue.
An ambulance crew is on their way to an elderly faller who's been waiting on the floor for three hours, but he's left even longer when they are diverted to an urgent call for a woman who says she is having a miscarriage. When they get there, they discover all is not as it first seemed and the crew is torn between frustration and compassion for a patient who's clearly troubled.
Meanwhile, another crew assist a 94-year-old who entertains them with surprisingly candid talk of her love life. As her condition deteriorates, the decision is made to take her into hospital. The crew are all too aware that this may be the last time she leaves home.
Across the city, a call handler spends an hour and a half on the phone to a suicidal patient who is running away from the crews trying to track him in the busy streets of London. A dementia sufferer is all too desperate for an ambulance. She has called 15 times tonight, and even after visits by clinicians who agreed she didn't need their medical assistance, she continues to call. If they keep sending ambulances to her, there'll be fewer for other patients in the area, so the service faces a difficult decision to say no to her heart rending pleas for help.

When I suffered a miscarriage, while living in Windsor, Uk... The paramedics were absolutely amazing. I was hysterical, in pain and in deep, deep anguish. They were so full of compassion, love and caring. They knew I was Canadian and didn't have my own family there, just my in laws, that I hardly knew and my (ex)husband was being deployed in just four days. I felt so cared for and so looked after, that I felt like I was at home. Wonderful paramedics and I wish I could find out who they were.

Alberta Grown - So sorry to hear about your baby. It's horrific enough when it happens in your own bed, never mind being halfway around the world with people who are virtually strangers. I personally would not have wanted my mother in law anywhere near me in a situation like that. You probably can find out the names of your paramedics - they will be on your hospital record in Windsor. You can request your medical records in writing from the hospital -you are an adult, you have the right to have a copy of your records. And maybe it would be a good thing to have anyway in case you have another child and your doctor wants to read what the British doctor wrote about your miscarriage. Google the hospital, find the contact name for someone in Health Records and e-mail a written, signed letter to them requesting copies of your record from your hospital stay. Provide them with your full name, address (at the time), DOB, and the hospital patient number given you at the time, if you still have access to that). You can ask for the entire record or just the ambulance report or whatever parts of the record you want.

There is in the UK. It's 6 months in prison or a fine of £5k. But for certain types of hoax callers, you can't do anything about it and have to tolerate it. Kathleen had some form of Dementia iirc and she was in her twilight years, so the police generally do not prosecute people like her for those reasons because it's pretty pointless. But with the mother faking her miscarriage, she would get a warning and be offered assistance (like she got at the end) but if she continued after that, then she will very much get prosecuted. It's all about someone's circumstances that governs nuisance calling laws.

I loved Dean and Andy's interaction with Peggy! In the USA, it's scoop and run for the ambulance crews. You abuse emergency phone numbers and your penalized. You pay for an ambulance to show up and save you. Very different, some good and some bad. I think all emergency services can learn and integrate from each other.
@SuperBosch
@SuperBosch 4 жыл бұрын
To be fair, that's the difference between public services (NHS) and privatized/commercialized health care in the US, where money and profit is eventually the driving force. Why treat someone like Peggy if it doesn't have any direct financial gains? They could do three scoop&runs in the time Peggy was treated, generating three times the money. It's really expensive and comes mostly out of taxation, and Americans don't like taxes. However, end-to-end, it might end up cheaper. If I were in the US, my heart rate would go up, just by thinking about the financial impact a hospital ride and treatment would cost me. Causing me to get treatment for high heart rate. And probably getting shot by the police in the process (ok, now I'm overreacting)

In the US our tactics are a bit different. WE're very much golden hour based. If you can get you into an OR within 60 minutes of your trauma injury your chance of living goes up drastically. Also, we won't stay on sight trying to resuscitate for 40 minutes 5 minutes we prep move and treat as we go to get them somewhere that has better resources to provide better treatment.
@paulshaw823
@paulshaw823 4 жыл бұрын
@FUDDLEYP JONES Also Paramedics are much better trained within the US. We also have access to better equipment lie Collars that let us move patients quicker, automated CPR machines (still new in adoption). We move fast so we can deal with call volume. The city of LA has 219 paramedics in total which means on avg you get 100 on shift if you're lucky. The faster we can get you to an ER means the more patients we can treat. While the NHS is amazing we have backup in that most firefighters are at least cross trained as EMS so they can respond and determine if an ambulance is needed or if it's just someone who needed help up etc and provide a level or treatment while they wait for us to arrive since 80% of fire calls are EMS calls in the US today. To my knowledge and I could be wrong in the UK fire is not cross trained with EMS.

My Mom had dementia and, at that point in her disease she would never have been left alone. You can clearly see, Kathleen doesn't understand why no one will come to help her. She doesn't remember she just called for an ambulance just a few minutes ago. Its truly heartbreaking. Don't they have someplace in London that takes care of the elderly, if need be? @Voracious Reader sure, but then you would get dangerous situations like in the US where poor people in need of immediate medical help would die or worsen their injury, because they can't afford the ambulance. Maybe a push for bettering the work conditions/circumstances for ambulance workers would encourage more people to work in that field, lessening the workload. Personally I've never used an ambulance either, but would feel no remorse calling them if neccesary, even if the reason turns out to be minor. Better safe than sorry when it comes to injuries that could be very serious.

If I ever do, I am covered by the insurance I pay every month, plus Medicare to cover the rest. I ask because you say that 'some EMTs' in Wisconsin need beside manners.' The only way you would know that is if you frequently call for ambulances. If you had one bad experience, you should not extrapolate any conclusions based on that. By the way, most of us in the US drive or are driven to the emergency rooms. Cheaper, faster.

They may have the same mentality as we have in Australia. Slef present to a hospital with a minor issue and wait 4-8 hours to be seen and sent home. Alternatively, wait an hour for an ambulance in the comfort of your own home. Not sure about the UK, but here we have paramedics who do a lot of the treatment you'd get in hospital. Procedures such as suturing at home (getting stitches) can be done by paramedics so you don't have to wait for ages at hospital.

Dragon Master I’m a first responder in the US , and I’m telling you 9 times out of 10 , I get there and the child is still fully clothed and they haven’t given Tylenol or Morton back and forth 🙄 they gave it one time and then never again after that. When baby has a fever , you wanna strip them down to a Diaper. Keep them in a cool environment , NOT AN ICE BATH, wet a cloth and wipe them down as a cooling measure. Tylenol and Morton around the clock, keep them hydrated and with a little bit of food if they can tolerate it. If the fever doesn’t break after continuous rounds of meds and cooling measures, then call 911 because a Febrile seizure can be next.

I was nearly killed in a hit and run in 2013.. i was 19 at the time. I was unconscious after being cut out of my car, I remember waking up when they lifted the stretcher to put me in the ambulance, I will never forget staring at the roof of that vehicle, the brace on my neck and the complete confusion that I was feeling. The journey to hospital felt like seconds, I later found out it was nearly 20 miles. I remember everything I was seeing being a purple red, I had blood in my eyes, my head was split open from forehead to to crown. The person responsible took off, was on fake plates and was never found. I can not describe how much of an affect it’s had on my life, yet cannot thank the emergency services both paramedics and police enough. These people are heroes. I recall coming out of ICU and a MET police officer literally was holding my wrist, I was completely delirious and in so much pain but will never forget the look of compassion in his eyes. I will never not remember his face.

Here in the US, calling an ambulance would easily run $5000-8000 so we don't ever call them. I would literally have to be bleeding out to even consider calling 911. Its so sad but the thought of the insane bills afterwards are more stressful than the injury. I know the NHS isn't perfect but they offer this benefit to anyone regardless of their ability to pay and that is pretty incredible!

Health should be accessible to everyone. It's just management problems. Here in Italy it's free and the response for a non-unrgent call is max 15 minutes. We do have other problems, for example around the 85% of the ambulance service is based on volunteers. The UK needs a lot more ambulances and paramedics.
