As well as covering the big cities of Birmingham, Coventry and Stoke, the service covers the rural areas of Shropshire, Worcestershire and Herefordshire. In this episode it's not the huge distances of the rural parts of the patch that are the problem - it's that several ambulances are stuck at Worcestershire Royal Hospital waiting to hand over their patients and are not available to treat new patients.
Fortunately, crewmates Sham and Nina are close by when a call from a couple in their nineties comes in. The husband has fallen over and the wife is unable to help him up. She can't reach the bolts to unlock the front door, forcing the crew to find a more creative way to get in. For Nina, it's a far cry from her days in the office as an events organiser.
The new shift starts with a call to a train spotter who has tripped and hurt his head at Bewdley Valley Steam Railway, right next to the elephants of the neighbouring safari park. The same crew are then called by police to help with a young man they have sectioned after threatening to kill himself. The crew are on their way to a specialist mental-health unit when the young man reveals he has taken an overdose of his medication. They divert to A&E at Worcestershire Royal Hospital and find themselves stuck in a queue waiting to hand their patient over.
Meanwhile, in Telford, Nina and Sham are called to an address they immediately recognise. Daniel, an alcoholic, is threatening to take his own life. His brother Simon arrives, and what unfolds is a story of love between two brothers both battling their own demons that have their roots in their childhood.

Where we live in the US, all calls like these are routed through the sheriffs or police departments and law enforcement is dispatched to follow up. When my daughter was 3 1/2 she learned in pre-school about 911 and called them unbeknownst to me, and they called back. Of course I apologized and explained as best I could what happened, but I also got a knock on the door 10 minutes later with the sheriff’s deputy checking up to make sure everything was really okay. They were very nice about it but also let me know that there were hefty fines if it became an issue. Needless to say, the bedroom extension was disconnected and we talked about 911 several times to make sure it didn’t happen again! 😳

I think it’s because of 2 major factors: 1) humans in the western world and some other countries have had it pretty good for some years now. A lot of the people/kids pranking emergency services have had zero real experience with human suffering and death. The ww2 generation would have never dreamed of hoaxing the people who are there to help those in real need. 2) it could also be from having negligent parents. When I was young, I knew my parents would have grounded me for the entire summer for something like that, if not longer. It kept me from making dumb impulsive decisions on the reg. If I didnt fear the consequence and also didn’t understand the weight of that action, I very well might have done something similar.

It broke my heart so much. Reminded me so much of my grandma after she suddenly had a stroke which later caused an anyerism. She was 90. It was incredibly hard on me because I was quite close with her. She lived like a woman 15 years younger than she was until suddenly, she wasn't. She had a previous minor stroke before so I had faith she could pull through this one but the surgeons messed up and dislodged some plaque and it caused an anyerism in her brain. That was crushing because it killed parts of her brain. One day she was laughing and full of life, the next time I saw her she didn't recognize us, she couldn't eat on her own, she couldn't talk or walk. It was made worse by the fact that she couldn't wear her dentures, glasses or hearing aids so she also looked different. She had these restrictive gloves on her hands to keep her from pulling out her tubes. All we could do was hold her hand, brush her hair and try to talk or sing to her. Sometimes she'll squeeze our hands and sometimes it did mean something but most of the time it didn't and she eventually wasted away.

Ya know something... I think the older generation of people could better understand the difference in the level of care they need. If you’re bleeding or bruised, get a bandaid or some ice and let the body time to heal itself. The youth of today don’t realize the costs involved in healthcare in both dollars and staffing needed somewhere else having to take care of a boo boo. I’m in Canada, and I’ve been to the hospital a couple times in the last two three years, and to visit patients, I see a disturbing trend with older immigrants coming into hospital for any little thing...cuz it’s free. This too is a massive drain and it bothers me to see that. Growing up we only saw the hospital if you were truly dying. Good thing theirs triage to assess the level of need vs want.

I think that's true for everywhere in the US. People are so self centered. My fiance who was a paramedic for years (now nurse as I am) woukd literally get calls for taxi purposes. Or people who were in a fast good restaurant and mad their food order was wrong. Almkst half their calls were like this and people knew key words to say to get the ambulance: "chest pain" being the most used. So many selfish people everywhere now.

When he was 32, he broke down, came back home, went to rehab and got sober, it’s been 10 years for him now and he’s married with a baby girl. I was the black sheep and was in active heroin addiction from age 18-31. my years of using were hell for my family. They were constantly afraid I was going to od or get murdered somewhere. I have over 5 years clean now after my dad helped me find a suboxone doctor, which saved my life. The fact that all 3 of us are sober is an absolute miracle and how far we have come makes my soul beam. However, I can’t even begin to imagine what kind of stress my mom must have gone through during the rough years. There was a solid amount of time while she was holding us together while we were drunk as skunks and high as kites. I’m absolutely amazed she stuck through it. She was our glue for sure. All of the responders/paramedics of this programme are so nice, kind and sweet. They've been thru and are going thru hard times themselves so they can feel the pain of others. It's amazing. Bless all of their hearts. Amazing and strong people.

Plus jail time + ambulance costs, helicopter expenses, personnel hours ---> all these to be charged to these pranksters. Have their photos and details published in the media. That will teach them a huge lesson. Their disgusting behaviour can costs other patients who are genuinely in need of medical attention.

well well it cost around $1000 for an ambulance ride and around $20k for an air ambulance ride, you can understand why.

Not really, my son is in EMT work here is the US, and they have a lot of frequent flyers. Both Medicaid users, which are most prevalent, but also private insurance carriers. It's so ridiculous because they truly prevent services for truly critical patients.

The last patient brought back a memory my nephew was an extreme alcoholic.... And he tried to quit on his own and it killed him. I believe he was in his late thirties maybe early forties. Not quite sure. I remember I was leaving the state and I did not want to drive my pickup truck A thousand Miles by myself so my brother-in-law offer to buy the truck for from me for my son-in-law I mean my nephew... Not too long after he had the truck he wrecked nine cars in a parking lot he was under the influence of alcohol...he wasn't allowed to drive for I don't know how long but that did not stop him maybe for a while but it did not stop him from returning to drinking. I think once you take drug abuse and alcohol abuse beyond your childhood those drugs become an escape from reality if your reality is unhappy unloved and abusive. God bless those who have a good heart and kindness and understanding towards people and do not monsterize them.

All the people on this show have such compassion! I think its sad how short of ambulances everyone is, causing backup of patients, knowing more and more people need help. I also worry about the paramedics. I know burnout is a real thing, having more medics, would help. I wonder why they don't have more, when clearly there is a need?

Anyone else from the US get severe anxiety when it shows them driving on the wrong side of the road?! I swear I panic almost everytime thinking they are about to be in a head on collision!!!! Also, Nina is beyond amazing. This whole scene is exactly why I went into this field even though it's so heartbreaking. But wow, the power of eye contact at eye level, a kind word and the human touch is beyond incredible. Bless you Nina! This is how all health care workers should be and act. And yes, when he touched her cheek I bawled for a solid hour. Every human deserves compassion, kindness, respect, dignity, honor, and love in their end days and their most vulnorable, sick moments. Also, if you hoax call an emergency service, sorry not sorry but FUCK YOU!
