An unprecedented insight into the London Ambulance Service, from the highly-pressurised control room to the crews on the streets, Ambulance provides an honest 360-degree snapshot of their daily dilemmas and pressures.
The London Ambulance Service brace themselves for a demanding weekend shift. As Londoners head out to play, the Ambulance Service often has to pick up the pieces. They need prepare for a torrent of cases, all with their own unique challenges.
In Brixton, advanced paramedic Rich helps a man who's out of control and lashing out in a nightclub after taking a drug overdose. In east London, a man who's travelled all the way in from Essex to eat at his favourite kebab house has been viciously assaulted. In the control centre, it's fun and games from nine months ago that's causing the phone to ring - five babies are being delivered on the phone tonight.
By Saturday night, the streets of London bring a huge challenge for the service - as the pubs begin to close, the violence is escalating. The ambulance dispatchers are forced to make tough calls about who gets an ambulance quickest and who will have wait - when a stabbing comes in they have to divert a crew from a six-year-old who's fallen from a bunk bed. It's not an easy decision for any of them.
A couple of hours later, the same crew attend their second stabbing of the night, and the seventh across London this evening. When, at the end of the weekend, a call for a miscarriage comes in, it's the type of emergency that the ambulance staff are trained for, but all the preparation in the world can't always shield them from the emotional toll that sharing a personal tragedy can have.

He is very young and holier-than-thou in his approach to the situation. I kinda agree with him, that ambulance services are being wasted on calls like that one, which is frustrating. Other people with life-threatening medical problems have to wait because crews are dealing with people who knowingly put themselves into their current situation. I can see both sides, but don't have a clue as to the solution. For situations like that guy, it would cost the taxpayers much less money if they paid for an Uber for the guy.
@callum9999
@callum9999 5 ай бұрын
@@xo2quilt I don't think you do fully "see both sides", because if you did you wouldn't be adding in your own value judgement (in fairness, with the caveat that you are doing so in a reasonable way!). He's imposing his own rational, logical value judgements onto a person who is incapable of thinking rationally/logically to that level. You might as well be moaning about selfish cancer patients not trying hard enough to get their immune cells to the right places. As a medical professional, I find his attitude troubling - and am not at all surprised his partner snapped. You can't justify it based on age - I've worked with people younger than him who showed far more compassion and understanding. From his attitude I'm guessing he hasn't been exposed to people suffering like that growing up. In an ideal world he shouldn't have needed that exposure to gain the ability to empathise, but hopefully repeated exposure to it will give him that perspective. I slightly doubt it will though.

Those headsets are specifically built for that. When you're wearing them, you can only hear the person you are talking to on the line (unless everyone is basically shouting), and the microphone won't pick up any background noise as long as you're speaking. To everyone's comments about the paramedic talking about the homeless man- I think you need to also see it from his perspective. He knows that every second counts and that every second that they spent with that homeless man, someone else could be dying- having a cardiac arrest, bleeding out from a stab or gunshot wound, gone into premature labour/bleeding and/or severe pain in pregnancy, been in a car accident, etc. I'm not saying that he was totally right, not at all. I'm just saying that I can understand why calls like that frustrate him because there should and needs to be a service available and better equipped to deal with situations like this so that paramedics can deal with the life threatening ones. You have to remember that these people are working long hours, going from job to job, seeing the most mundane to the most horrific thing, barely getting a break some shifts and then going home knowing that they will get up to do it all again. I think that it's okay that they express their frustration every now and again as long as it isn't towards or around any patients/members of the public.

Seriously, I was wincing. Services like mental health and elderly care and poverty relief have been sharply cut in recent years, meaning the burden is being heaped on emergency services, overwhelming them. It's not the fault of the vulnerable people that those social services aren't there and they're lost and alone. People who work as paramedics and in health care really need to have empathy.

Dan is young and still a bit stupid, as he hasn't had a lot of life experience, I will assume that he didn't grow up in poverty or borderline poverty, I see a lot of my kid's generation unable to empathise with other's circumstances because life has been good to them. Dan will either leave that service in a few years or he will develop empathy for ppl who are less fortunate.

He wants more serious cases so he doesn't get bored with mundane ones. He doesn't even tries to add that he doesn't want people to be seriously hurt. It looks like he either likes to be the hero or gets way too excited about seeing and interfering with other people in danger. These are the worst possible reasons to be in this business. It's a hard job to do. If he cares more about his high then the well being of patients and can't understand a patients' struggle he shouldn't be a paramedic.

That old man is a gifted artist. I paused it and looked at his work. I hope someone tells him he is good. And I hope there is a system coming that helps old and lonely people. It is sad to see homeless people, mental health patients and other lonely or old people being so alone and having to call 999 to have a talk, care or reassurance. It is truly heartbreaking. In my country there is a buddy system. Not that everyone uses it or even knows it exists, but still. It is there. And I think it is important to have a system like that. It takes a lot of pressure of the emergency people. And it prevents a lot of misery sometimes.

I agree. I remember a different episode with a different paramedic, he said that he tried not to judge people cause whos to say who is worthy of an ambulance and who isnt. And she cleared it up saying she didnt verbally agree or disagree with how he acted and didnt say that his actions were right. But then her partner tried to guilt her into changing her opinion. It didnt leave a good taste in my mouth. Cause if you judge people then can you give them proper care. I also get his point that they could have attended to other more serious cases, but a simple fall could be serious as well depending on the situation.

Come on now. Haven't you ever been frustrated or angry and said something you later regretted or that you didn't really mean? And as far as not being "professional"--he didn't say it in public, he said it in private to his partner. You keep those things bottled up, you're going to burn out and quit, then the system will be one more person under staffed. It was precisely because he had empathy and compassion--for the people who might die without them--that he was so frustrated.

There certainly seems to be more than enough business on at least the weekends & some nights to cover the costs involved. I wonder if these are older videos bc I watch another series which follows ambulances but also trauma Drs going on calls in what I believe is the same areas. I could be wrong as I’m not from the UK. But even in those shows there STILL isn’t enough emergency people/vehicles. It would seem like the government could make arrangements w/taxi drivers to pick up non critical patients to hospital at no charge. Just to help free up some of these ambulances.

I remember getting a call for the air medics asking for a medivac plane to be ready and a pilot crew called in. A women up in the reserve went into labour very early and had given birth to a very premature baby. There’s no proper hospitals up there just clinics. I called the crew in, the plane was prepped and the flight EMT’s came in and they left. An hour later I got a call asking me to let the ground crew know the clear out the hanger, and no one was to be in when the aircraft came in. On the flight back the baby passed away. There was nothing they could do. I remember watching the aircraft taxi in, and park in the hanger, and seeing this women in tears holding a bundle wrapped in pink. I cried just having to find out what happened. I couldn’t imagine what it’s like when the EMT’s try so hard but in the end there’s nothing they can do.

We are never allowed to judge people as health care workers. It is not our job to question why we were called to someone. The patient we get is the only patient we have in that moment, and we need to care for every part of them. Its okay to have opinions, but when it comes to your *patient*, those opinions need to be tucked away and put somewhere else. It's part of the oath we signed up for. Learning to let go of controlling the situation and instead controlling just yourself is difficult but ultimately more healthy for an individual in high stress jobs like this. :)
