I experienced an intermittent problem with my Jeep Wrangler TJ randomly dying for a while but it occurred so infrequently it was hard to trace. The harness was routed around a head stud at the back of the engine that had rubbed though the loom and wiring insulation causing it to short out and stall. Fairly easy low cost repair!

Great video, I was contemplating getting up tomorrow and changing my fuel pump and chasing down a bad sensor. OBDI said it was a Cam Position Sensor and a MAP sensor and also my speedometer quit working. My 2006 Wrangler had died on the road twice before after reaching operating temps within 15 minutes or so. The fuel pump was my first thought. The last time it happened my wife was driving it and was close to home so I went to see what it was and it started up for me. Drove it home where it would not start again. After watching your video I couldn't sit in my recliner thinking about it any longer. I went into the shop where the Jeep started right up so I just started moving the harness around where i found it would die when I moved the harness around where it went over the oil fill tube brace. I pulled the components off the harness and turned it over to find where it had rubbed through and into three wires. I cleaned up the wires and since none were cut all the way I taped them up and recovered them. I braced the harness and got it as far from the engine block as I could. Started right up and has no codes and the speedometer is working again . I have been taking good care of this jeep since I bought it 16 years ago and love going on road trips in it. It was getting to the point I was ready to sell it or maybe upgrade but I feel like I have learned a lesson about Jeep ownership. I'm going to have to keep a better eye on the electrical system. Thanks for the inspiration. You probably saved by several hundred dollars and alot of headache this week.

Thank you for this video. I had the same problem and you showed me where to look and the same wire was chafed on the same engine stud and was grounding out. My symptoms was shutting out typically once I took my foot off the pedal once in forward gear and once I put Jeep in reverse. Sometimes I would get a stutter and then stall if I gave it gas. Check this point first before changing idle air control or crank position sensor. I also found a lot of soot on my throttle body because of this problem. Thanks again.

my YJ did this last year. I thought it was bad gas. I made sure I went to the same station thinking it was gas. I just had a new fuel pump put in. no one knew what its problem was. I went for replacing a sensor and thats when I noticed the bare wires. I am the guy who can admit, I do not know what I'm doing, but I found it. that is frustrating in itself. I ended up wrapping tape and pulling it away with an electrical tape "spidey web". going to look into that liquid insulation stuff and attack it again. nice work. nice video.

Thanks for this find! That was exact same issue I had. Finally fixed. Luckily, my wires in the harness were not frayed. It was, however, the wrap around was melted or worn out from abrasion. So lifted the harness away from that bolt you shown.

Wow this is crazy man! I have a 99 Xj sport. Just last week mine did the same thing! I figured it was bad gas and got screwed putting pricey gas in that thing! Mine needed the downstream O2 sensor changed for a long time. So when i went to autozone, they thought it was a clogged cat, and did the obd2 check. It pulled a P 1694 code for the PCM. I checked my CPS with a multimeter and that tested good. So i didnt have time to test it myself, brought it to mineke. They said no way the cat is clogged, its electrical. So i cleaned the battery grounds, the one on the firewall, and wiring harness. Took it for a ride a couple hours ago. Still did it, but not as much often. So i went back to autozone, and was gonna buy a TPS and an IAC valve but the lady told me not to and its in the wiring. So that leads me to right here. Its raining now and tomorrow hopefully I’ll solve this headache!! I need a beer! Lol

Poor engineering for sure. I bought my first Jeep, 2005 Wrangler TJ, year and half ago. I didn't realize all the problems and issues that people were having from electrical and front ends. You have to be a hard core enthusiast to put up with it all. I think I'll sell mine and swear off Jeeps for the time being.

I have 2000 Cherokee that has been parked for about 3 years. I been changing sensors and coils until I couldn't find any thing else to change. Nothing fixed the problem. I would be on the highway at 65 mph, and the engine would die and before I could get off the road it would magically start itself up again, most of the time. If it did not restart itself I would put in neutral and turn the key off then back to start. When the RPMs came up I drop it into Drive and keep going. This happened 2-3 times a day. People told me it was this or that, but none of them were right. I'm now going to check my wiring harness!! P.S. I used to have a '64 and a '63 Impala SS!!

It is possible but I doubt you have the same issue. It is easy and quick to check the harness and see if anything is frayed. Your error codes indicate a lean condition on cylinders one and two. I would look for an intake manifold leak at the head or a vacuum leak. Get a can of carburetor cleaner and spray it at the intake manifold where It bolts to the Head toward the front of the engine. Do it while the vehicle is idling and if the idle increases you have a leak.

I wish I could attach a picture here, but your Jeep is missing a piece. There is a plastic holder that attaches to the top of that head stud that you route the harness through and it keeps it above that screw. Though I bought mine used and that could be an after market fix. Mine is an 04. Could also be a factory fix for this issue.
@chip63ss99
@chip63ss99 Жыл бұрын
I know the piece that you are referring to. They didn't install them until around 2003. My TJ is a 2000. I also have a 2006 LJ and it does have the harness routing bracket. I think it was a thought later in production to stop this from happening.
