This is a freaking lifesaver! I thought a noise coming from my truck was the CV axle going out, but recently it started to grind bad and really begin to produce that whistle associated with a wheel bearing. My truck "Ruby" is a '99 XLT 4x4 with the same set up as yours. Thanks so much for the vid. PS. the trick with the baling wire sounds fairly smart. wish me luck with the operation!

@AICvideo 4 жыл бұрын
I recently did this again to replace something else, I ended up just using a couple of screw drivers, since I couldn't find my bailing wire. It was about as easy if you account for the time it takes to cut the pieces. just use the screw driver to lift up the tabs on a couple of the sections, pull on the plastic piece to hold them up, and work your way around. Took like maybe a minute or two for the first side, and 30 seconds for the other side.

For sure! It's a pretty straight forward job. but one thing i might recommend, if you have a 4x4 with the vacuum system, swap the vacuum hubs for manual locking ones. It means if you ever need your 4wd system, you have to get out and lock your hubs, BUT you only have to be stranded once with a failed vacuum system to realize the value in that. These are the ones I use: amzn.to/2G3DlC9

I have replaced the hubs in my '99 ranger and made the mistake of not greasing those small niddle bearings inside the back the hub and realized later that they will fall apart. You did a good job greasing the inside of any moving parts. Another thing, you forgot to mention the other larger O ring around the back of the hub. Those seem to be kind of difficult to find if not included with the new hub. I've been thinking about replacing the whole assembly including the cv shafts for the ones in the explorer to make them more efficient . Good video Thanks!
@AICvideo
@AICvideo 7 жыл бұрын
+Leo Cadena yeah, I was able to reuse my old ones, I couldn't find new ones. What's the difference between the ranger and the explorer shafts?
@leocadena6844
@leocadena6844 7 жыл бұрын
The difference is that the years '98, '99 ford made this hub "vacuum activated" which made them not very effective and easy to fail but, the explorers never had this system so the tip of the axle shafts has a thread and nut and the hub is grabbing it constantly making them literarily "constant velocity" (cv shafts). In this case the 4x4 can still be activated with the switch in the control panel via the transfer case in the transmission.
@AICvideo
@AICvideo 7 жыл бұрын
+Leo Cadena ah, like my 89 Cherokee, it has a crappy vacuum system, to save gas. later years got rid of it because it didn't actually save gas and is constantly broken.

So I just ordered some new hubs for my 98 4x4 ranger, and also thought I had 4 w ABS. You wouldn't have happened to get yours from 1aauto? I would like to used the hubs I got by clipping the wire as well, instead of exchanging them. The hubs been holding up? Thanks!

I bought mine off amazon, beyond that I don't remember exactly what brand they were. So far so good, BUT i didn't use the right kind of grease, get wheel bearing grease, Mine will probably need to be replaced again sooner than they should because I used the wrong lubricant.

Also, I'm in the middle of replacing my front PVH hubs with Explorer axles and hubs on my 99 Ranger. PVH hubs and the manual hub kits for the 98 - 00 Ranger are garbage. Just gonna go with live axles.

Hubs should have 30 SAE oil, not grease, also, there should be a spring next to the retaining ring on end of shaft.

You might like the look.... but its putting much more pressure on your wheel bearing.... the tire is supposed to track in a certain location ... you can put outer wear or inner wear and pressure on bearings with a tire that is inside or outside from factory build spec.... you may damage or change handling characteristics as well....Doc.

.... A mazda B series is a Ford ranger with a mazda badge. Literally every part is labeled with "foMoCo" the bearing and hub are one unit. you cannot replace "just" the bearing. My title is accurate and my video is relevant.
