I've had the same Xplus (but as a folding lock) for now 10 years on my bike, it's been in use daily, being locked at the train station. So far it's resisted some Bolt cutters (you can see where they tried to cut on the plastics, didn't get through though) and my bike is still there. So, bought a new one last year for my other bike. Can definitely recommend.
@candelalux1403 Жыл бұрын
I’d recommend the U lock as the folding one has a weakness where the folding mechanism sits, you can get through that with a grinder pretty quickly. The u lock is hardened steel which is very resistant to grinder attacks.

Years and years ago, I inherited a bike with a u-lock locked around the frame. Previous owner had lost the key. I rode with it on there until I got sick of it and I ended up simply drilling it out. This was an old time Kryptonite lock with the cylindrical shape key. This was way before the creation of the Fahgetaboutit and NY Bike Lock. Drilled a hole at the bottom of the keyway, and drilled out the top of the keyway. After doing so at the top, the pins then fell right out and I rotated the cylinder with needle nose pliers using the 2 holes I made as the gripping points. The funny thing is, the lock still worked perfectly. The original key that is lost anyway would not work but it would work with the pliers still. I was able to still engage and disengage the lock despite the fact that I drilled all of the pins. Actually, by hand, you couldn't turn it. You needed tools. I actually still used that lock for a few weeks after as an actual bike lock and I would have the pliers in my pocket instead of the key. Lol. This trend didn't last long. I did get a better lock at some point. I was starting to get a bit paranoid. 😂

@toms96512 жыл бұрын
If someone tries to cut it with a boltcutter that person needs to be inhumanly strong. 13 tons of cutting resistance. I also saw that some of the larger cutters can not even reach around the shackle to even make a cut. But with an anglegrinder and 3 minutes of time it is done.

“Enough pick resistance to secure a bike on the street” I have seen other lockpickers with older tools on cylinders like these. It took the the best at least ten minutes with the average around thirty. Around half of the dudes that tried, never got it open. The Lockpicking Lawyer is the best lockpicker I have ever watched.

The idea behind a good lock is it forces a criminal to spend unwanted time picking a lock and carrying specialized suspicious tools. All lock are defeatable and locking fixtures can all be cut with the right tools and knowledge. What is important is how good locks are employed to make the criminals life more challenging. Criminals like easy pickings, and low hanging fruit so to speak.

Well... The right "tool" is often a key, so the right tools would be the key to picking locks.

Had my £700 mountain bike stolen today, 2pm broad daylight on a busy street in central London. It had 2 of these locks, and a combination Hiplok. A builder watching said it was angle-grinded whilst people filmed the guy on their phones and was gone in minutes.

Personally I’m loving my Abus Extreme locks over my Kryptonite New York locks! The quality feels better not only that ABUS has videos on their site and on KZfaq of them destroying their own locks! Something the big K doesn’t have. That’s why I’m slowly but surely converting to ABUS! EDIT by destroying I meant how much Newtonmeters of force it needs to be opened by force. They have pulling twist hammer and freezer tests on their youtube .

I sometimes lose touch with reality, and let myself believe I'm a great lock-picker because I spend hours per day watching 'LPL' and 'BosnianBill' videos. :-( I just started a week ago, but I have a great pick kit, a nice Panavise (just like BosnianBill - lol), and about $300 worth of more crap on the way. I've got everything except talent, and open locks. *lol*

That's actually a phycological effect where you think you'll be better at something after watching lots of videos on it. You have to be careful because people who do that are more likely to lose interest after not being as good as they convinced themselves they were.

In one of our problem cities in the Netherlands it's cheaper to buy a new bike every time it's stolen, since you can just buy them at the back of the train station for €15,-. Sometimes it gets stolen in a week, sometimes it doesn't for a whole two months. Either way it's cheaper than buying one good bike with very expensive locks.
