When the Jagdkommando and Jägerbataillon needed their regular AUGs overhauled, they turned to ‪@steyr_arms‬, and out came the AUG A3 SF "Pic rails for days" rifle.
Successful weapon system modernization typically starts with a solid base platform. As the world's most successful bullpup rifle, the Steyr AUG certainly has a track record to build upon, but also uphold. Was Steyr able to deliver?
This Gen1 model A3 SF is incredibly rare, especially in Jägerbataillon 25 load out. It really is a treat to have one of these in the wild to evaluate. Hope you like it!

I don't agree that aug is heavy in fact aug has optic in standard mode and it gives additional 300-400 grams. If you take it away it will be something 3.5-3.6 kg which is very close to AK-74.

The second you make references to the 5.56 as a 500 yard gun you lose all credibility. The 5.56 is about useless past 200 yards and that's only if you use 64 grain hunting ammo with a 20 inch barrel or longer and 3,200 fps. The taliban just stayed at 300 or more yards as they knew the M4s were bs at long ranges. Two of my friends in Vietnam got shot because the 5.56 is a crappy cartridge and after 4 to 5 rounds in the torso the VC was still in the fight. Each of my friends took 1 shot from an AK 47 and barely survived.

Would you like to elaborate how my fellow comrades liked those guns aswell. Our 'Mountain Men' (Gebirgsjäger-Bundeswehr) train sometimes together with austrian guys and since you switch guns from time to time i really would like to know what either of you thought about the rifles. Edit: In my opinion our Generals should finally engage the 21st century :| We could easily train together on-/offline; US Military developed ARMA but did nothing since and thats not enough specially with new type of warfare i.e. drones etc. Thus we need advanced training methods and if they want to do it the right way they need to involve men and women that are 'gods' in their profession! And most importantly we need it now. Im leftist, anti war, pro civil rights nonetheless the very last thing i want is my freedom taken away by some foreign governments. When intellectuals considering to take up arms as last resort its a scary time we live in.

Touched a StG 77 for the first time in 1999-2000 when I did my military service in Austria. It was the standard A1 and it was love at the first sight ;) For boys who never had a firearm in their hands (the culture is different then in USA), to be able to take apart, service, and put back together a rifle, after just a few minutes of instruction, then go to the range and hit some targets with it, was just mind blowing to us... 17 years later (and no shooting practice) I went to a gun show, where they handed me a StG and 10 rounds, and I just hit 10 targets with it... Love this rifle, but we never called it AUG, always just StG, or when speaking to some older people, we called it StG 77, so there is no confusion, in case they used the former StG 58 (like my father) glad you guys have fun ... the AUG A3 SF looks very nice btw

One other idea behind the quick swap barrel was to change it to a LMG with a heavy barrel with attached bipod and a 40 round magazin. It can also shoot rifle grenades with the third gas setting. That thing wont brake on you. Mine had a crack going from the ejection port going third of the way to the reciever. The thing couldnt care less. We did 5 shots on short range to learn the system. Shots 6 and 7 where hits out at 300 meters...6th and 7th shots of my life...not that rifle. If I remember the handbook correctly Steyr wrote you should clean the rifle all 6000 rounds. All accessoires for cleaning etc are in the buttstock and you can strip it down to it main components in seconds. Only thing you cant take apart is the trigger assembly, but that thing is also happy when you wipe it down and give it a drop of oil. What often flys under the radar is how great the mags are. Very sturdy but transparent so you have an easy time checking your remaining rounds Much love for the STG!

If you can get past the "it ain't American", the AUG is an utterly fantastic combat rifle. I've been shooting AUGs for fun, personal protection, and competition since the early 80s, and still do. They were way ahead of their time, and I still consider them to be cutting edge. The ONLY complaint I have with the AUG is the trigger, but that can be fixed. Great test and review!

I love this rifle. I’ve been passing on the A3SF scope just because I don’t really need it and don’t think I’d use it as much as what I’ve currently got on my A3M1 but man it looks cool. I picked up an A2 (converted USR) last year for a price I couldn’t say no to and just goofing off with a 20” barrel and the skinny 1.5x optic really reignited my love for these rifles after being kind of stale on them for the last half dozen years. If I’m going out to shoot a 5.56 rifle for fun the AUG A2 is right at the top of the list, and like you said Henry it’s nuts how well they pulled the rifle off in 1977. Yeah it’s original setup is a little long in the tooth today nearly half a century later but back in the late 1970s up through the 1980s? What a flippin stud of a rifle.

We went into the winter mountains for a weekend, and I got to do some aerial photography on their airmobile landing qualifications. These guys are awesome, though as heck (definitely much fitter than I was). They are not the top-end Special Forces of the Austrian Army (that would be the Jagdkommando", but well within the skills of what you would consider as "Rangers/Airborne" stateside. I only regret that I never got to jump with them.

That report is available online and is an interesting read. However it's very very clear the Australians were immediately biased against Colt/The M16 and weren't entirely objective to ensure the AUG won in a landslide. The best examples were the bitching about Colt using inferior shipping crates compared to Steyr and their hilarious claim that the AUG is ambidextrous while the M16 isn't.

@@Anonymous8421It was quite the opposite. All of the soldiers, the Major in charge of them and the testing staff went into the trials wanting the M16 to win and expecting it to. At that point they'd all been using the M16 (A1s) for their whole careers alongside the SLR and M60 (on a 2:5:1 ratio) and thought the AUG was a joke by reputation. The only plausible explanation for the report not reflecting real trial results requires a proper conspiracy directing the trial staff to pick the AUG no matter what because a license to manufacture M16 wouldn't be granted by Colt. There's no evidence for that, and not for want of looking.

In Australian military the clearance of the stoppage, back during GWAT, was to yank out the barrel if the obstruction in the chamber didn't clear. In most cases it was a "tilt, cock, lock, look-in" and if there is a double-feed or whatever, removing the mag usually cleared it. If round was in the barrel and didn't fall out, then we yanked the barrel. AUG has a relief at the base of the barrel which helped with ease of extraction.

I found the std AUG , 20 inche barrel , donut with crosshair reticle , to be a solid 1-2 moa shooter , with a good shooter he will keep 5 rd group inside an inche , I have seen them thrown into the back of a truck , like sticks of wood , very robust solid rifle , and I have not seen a better/tougher 556 magazine . You can strip the trigger mech down , and use a fine swiss file and 1000-2000 grit sandpaper to remove the mold line that runs down the center of the hammer and sear etc , and then drop some powdered graphite onto the mech , and you will be amazed at how good the trigger pull be comes . Also even thou you can dismount the barrel from the receiver to clean etc , when we used them in comps , we tended clean the barrel in place in the receiver , ie not pull the barrel out , it a rifle that suits NO oil , except a drop in the bolt cam slot , keep everything else clean and dry . Becareful when shooting with the front grip up , you can get your fingers near to the exhaust port on the gas block . We zeroed them on a large diamond , and for SS109 ammo we zeroed at 82mm up at 100m , which gave us a 300m point of impact zero . You can give it the HK slap if you like , BUT donot ride the cocking handle in anyway .

Always liked the bullpup format just for how light and handy it looked. The most rifle i've ever held have been repeaters and bolt actions.

it's actually not very light, my aug with LPVO, light, and mlok rail weighs about 9.5lbs, to me it feels much like shouldering an mp-40 or Suomi or any heavy ww2 era smg, but is incredibly balanced so you can still shoot and make hits one handed

Also a simple Austrian here. When I did my military service with the older version of this gun, I remember that we were told that the gun can be taken apart and reassambled in durty water (I believe they even said muddy water but I guess they over promised a bit) and it would still work. However we only shot a few times and we didn't like the cleaning afterwards. Also Happy to see the positive feedback to this Austrian gun (national pride I guess) as most of Austrian have not been involved in the design or any other part of the gun

The AUG just feels like home. When I did my military service I had the standard OG A1 version. One time I had the chance to accompany the Military Police (MP) of the Austrian Army. Of course they have a better version, instead of the doughnut reticle of death they had an Aimpoint Reddot with a magnifier. Man that thing was just absolutely brilliant… Lined up the shots perfectly one by one. They said the accuracy of the MP version was just as good as their HK 417 DMR… I had the chance to also shoot AR 15s from Schmeisser and Sig, also a Sig552 but whenever I come back to the AUG it gets me again.

so here is a little fun fact for the design. the guy who actually came up with the design was a pupil. the company made a contest in schools and one kid actually drew a quiet similar design. they made some prototypes and realized that its actually a pretty awesome design. in austria btw the rifle is better known as STG 77 which is short for Sturmgewehr 77, noone really calls it steyr aug. they austrian army actually use a quiet different optic than the jagdcommando, the basic optics dont have instead of a crosshair a simple "bulp" which is just a circle. because of the neutral status austria has they made this so you actually cant make an aimed killshot. the size of the cirlce is actually so, that at the range of 300m a man with the hight of 1.80m fits perfectly into the circle. the normal austrian "jäger" use a longerr barrel too,

Do you realize how dangerous it is to watch this content on a Wednesday, and then be sitting in the waiting room of a car dealership, bored, reading e-mails, only to see Palmetto State has a sale on the Steyr AUG A3 SF in .300 blackout (7.62x35mm) 16" bbl. WITH a 20" 5.56 bbl. and the SF optic to go with it?? You made me spend money man!! You are a dangerous dangerous man @9HoleReviews dangerous to wallets everywhere that is!!! love the content man, and since you can't take money with you when you die... well I'm glad I got that Steyr AUG. @@79johnJthat’s another reason why I got it…and it rides in my truck with me, even to work…I’d rather be prepared for the worst than to have SHTF and be unprepared. After shooting it, I’ll take it ANY DAY over my M4 (which I had 20 years using/carrying). It’s like a Cadillac of guns.

In the late 80s, we were serving in Dhekelia, Cyprus, alongside AUSCON UN troops in Famagusta who had the Aug and Rottweiler dogs. As I was married and lived in quarters and the Austrians were unaccompanied, we used to have a few of them round for meals quite regularly. They were really nice guys, very professional.

Had these in the late 90s early 2000s (Italian Army SF), well the original AUG at least. Pros compared to previous standard issue Beretta SCP-90 which it replaced : lighter, maintenance take down was more straightforward and the biggest factor : compact dimensions even with a full size barrel which was especially appreciated considering the ballistic advantages over a much smaller barrel. What wasn't particularly appreciated was the trigger : I remember there was no single/full auto switch. It was all a matter of finger pressure on the trigger. The idea was interesting but in practice it required a lot of getting used to. Especially for heated rapid single shot fire. Plus it had a non standard magazine and a next to useless 1.5 fixed sight. Ultimately a switch to the M4 family was made which just made a lot of sense considering SF peculiar needs. Cool rifle in any case though. I remember, oddly enough, the Carabinieri GIS had them in Iraq. It was a bit odd because the Carabinieri Tuscania regiment were also using M4s in the same theatre. The GIS Augs though were more recent versions. They were black, had shorter barrels and had Acogs mounted on rails.

It was 1986 at the JB 25. For good cleaning we stripped it off and „took it under the shower“. Forbidden, but it was still OK. „You guys are doing a perfect cleaning after an excercise.“ 😊 During such excercise one „lost“ a fully loaded mag and a tank ran over it with his chain. We found it, put it into STG and everything was still OK. Couple of years later I had to do some work at the riffle school south of Klagenfurt, well known as the Origin of Clock, STG-77 and famous Austrian hunting riffles. Due to good contacts at that time, I could join a test shooting with serial number 2 plus an „inofficial“ Beta version at their „shooting / testing tunnel“. Nice experience! Thank you so much for this review, seeing the Basic Design is still out there. Two more points: As Austria is still a Neutral Country we had to develop everything inside as Part of the Doktrin. Sadly, you did not opened the shoulder compartment, where all necessary cleaning parts for the riffle get stored. „Maintain the riffle where ever you are without carrying an extra bag!“ 🙂

My AUG has become my favorite rifle. The balance and short OAL are big factors, and the downsides I keep hearing about like the trigger (fixed to within my liking for the price of free) and slow reloads (more dependent on how you carry your spare mags than anything else) are kind of non-issues for me. It has some fixable quirks otherwise but it's just a solid rifle in all respects, cool to see y'all pushing it out to ranges I'm unable to

As an austrian guy, who performed military service, i can tell you that the STG77 (that's what the rifle is called here) is truly easy to handle. Especially when you realize that there is not a single screw in the weapon to hold it together. I saw someone running down a hilltop holding a rifle in each hand and fireing both rifles without problem (blank cartridges). The standard rifle for infantry got a longer barrel, which can easy be replaced with the short one, which is used by special commands like Jagdkommando (military) or Cobra (police, in the USA it would be SWAT). And for the ending of the comment: The way you set the rifle after firing is exactly the way we get instructed to do during military service (pulling out the magazine and enptying the barrel)

The AUG and SIG 550 both fascinate me: they were both designed by similar countries with similar defensive doctrines, around the same set of constraints involving climate (operating system and cold weather accomodations) and etc., but the end result in both countries ended up being so different.
