How does a family with more mouths to feed than days in the week budget their weekly shop!?
In this British TV documentary, we follow some of the UK's largest families and ask the big questions about how these supersize households manage.
In this episode The Hamlins, are determined not to take government handouts. Dad works, mum stays at home and does the odd job and they budget fiercely to stay afloat. In their opinion, it was their choice to have 12 children so it is their responsibility to look after them. And while they do collect child support and working family tax credits, neither of them has ever claimed income support, disability benefit or housing benefit. They are determined to set a good example for their children and that means paying for everything themselves. To save money, they live relatively frugally, cook all of their food from scratch, buy in bulk and don’t spend on anything that isn’t a necessity. If this means that the kids don’t get pocket money, have to make do with hand me downs and have never been abroad then so what? They all have enough to eat and are cared for as well as any other children. They hate the fact that the media are determined to portray large families as sponging whiners who have had numerous children precisely so that they don’t have to work and are determined to never fall into that trap. But do the children feel the same? And is it fair to deprive them of the Xboxes, trainers, pocket money and trips to the cinema that they see all of their friends enjoying? Or at the end of the day is a loving family all that really matters?
Next we will meet a family who hold a very different set of beliefs, The Watsons. They are a single parent family of 15, living in council accommodation and survive solely on benefits. The mum believes that she is performing an important role in raising the next generation and doesn’t think that she conforms to the typical portrayal of a large family - yes they live in a council house and she doesn’t work but the government handouts aren’t squandered on flat screen TVs and vodka, it all goes on the kids. She maintains that even if she worked, she would be worse off as paying for childcare would cost more than she could earn. In her opinion why go to work to pay for someone to look after her kids when she can just cut out the middle man and do it herself. She is currently petitioning the council for a bigger house as they are all living on top of each other. But if they are given one she expects a backlash from the local press and community, something that she is desperate to protect her kids from.
Finally we meet the Hanns. A family of 14 that live in Dundee and keep a close family spirit through their practice of Mormonism. To Mum Emma, having a child taken away from her at 18 when she was too young to have a real voice in the matter, has made her grateful to have as many children as she can. Money isn’t easy for them with dad working long shifts and mums whole day being spent washing the kids clothes, but they more than make up for it with love. They also have a few tricks of the trade to get them by, who needs 14 pork chops when you can just buy the whole pig!

Shadia Ali I did too. I was 13 taking care of a 4 year old until he was grown. I’m fine too. A older sibling should not have to raise their younger siblings. PERIOD! I don’t know how you grew up, but I was forced to drop out of school to take care of him and make meals out of what little food we had. I wouldn’t change a thing, cause I love him to death. He’s 26 now and doing great. I sacrificed my life growing up, my education, and much more. I went back to school much later in life just to get my high school diploma. If you can’t raise your own kids don’t have them. You said you helped raise. Well I did raise 2 different things sweetie!

I don't care how many kids you want as long as you can afford them. What I don't agree with is the eldest daughter having to carry the burden. It isn't fair to her. Older children who carry this kind of burden look tired, and worn out for their age. They're not thriving. And why, because mummy still dresses and behaves like she's twenty five. I'm not disputing that you grow to love your siblings, but inevitably you will resent the responsibility. You will feel cheated.

"I escaped the baby making machine"?! Uh, I'm pretty sure your were present during conception, buddy. The British press is brutal. And at least she's taking responsibility and trying to raise those kids alone and yet she's the villain in all this? I don't think I could survive 5 minutes of this woman's life. My neighbors have TEN absolutely beautiful children all under age 15. They are extremely respectful and just such a joy to be around. I am 47 and couldn't ever have children and currently I'm critically ill so having them has really helped to keep a smile in times of pain. They would visit me in the hospital, singing and praying for me. They would even fast because they wanted to know how Ms. Nadine feels since I lived on a feeding tube for almost 5 years. They are Mormom and both came from big families too. Dad works as a building Contractor and mom is actually a former Olympic runner. They had nine and mom even ran up until the last month of her pregnancy. Then with the Olympic trials nearing in 2020 was when COVID was consuming the world they made the decision that family was more important. She withdrew and 2 months later they announced they were pregnant with baby number 10 who will turn One in a few days. That pregnancy took a terrible toll on her and so she couldn't do it again. It's been very draining, when I up to it I try to pop over and help. In fact they will be flying in w/in the next 3 hours. They spent the Holidays with the dads family in a different state. My mom and I cleaned their house and stocked the fridge with food so hopefully they could get some rest in after traveling all day. They live very modestly in a 4 bed home and still help out others within their church when they can. I hope everyone stays safe out there and be kind to others.

Ms. Watson's kids all seem so nice, and their home is clean and orderly. Just because her husband walked out doesn't mean she should get so much slack. My mother was basically ostracized after her dicorce from my father, with whom she has 4 daughters. It's not fair. Just because a marriage falls apart doesn't mean the woman should be attacked. And Lee and Emma, they are adorable. Seeing how nervous and excited they were just to go on a date, and how happy their family is for them is so wholesome. Their family deserves to be happy :)

I grew up in a family of 7 children. I was the eldest and a girl. Then came 5 boys and 1 girl. Most of my teenage years I spent helping my mom raise the youngest 2 kids and doing lots of housework. While 5 boys had simple duties like mowing the garden and shoving snow ever once in a while, I had to clean the floors and toilets daily, do laundry and cook for my family. All of that on top of school and doing my homework. It was nice to have so many siblings. It was less nice to be like a housemaid for the entire family. My mom wasn't built for having so many children. Once she started working parttime, she was much more happy and content than being a stay at home mom. There might be mothers who do excellent jobs at raising many kids. However, I think it is wrong to view children as a luxury object. They are precious human beings. Once you start compromising on the freedom of one child to benefit the whole family, it's a sure sign that you shouldn't have had that many children. I'm almost 30 now and married. But since I know how nervwrecking and labpurintensive children can be, I haven't found the courage to have children on my own...

I’m sorry, that’s not ok your parents pretty much scarred you from having children. I bet that happens often in these families. I’m the oldest of 6 and I took care of my youngest 2 brothers most of the time. It scarred me from wanting a big family. I also didn’t enjoy having that many siblings. My parents gave up on parenting often and my brothers and sister turned into little shits and are now big adult shits. Don’t bring more kids into the world than you can successfully raise and teach to be decent humans! I did learn from my parents. So I’ve always wanted 2 kids but I only have one because my marriage didn’t work out and I will not bring another baby into the world being a single mom. Nope. So I get it and hope you can do what makes you happy whether you choose to have kids or not.

I Googled her while watching this because I felt bad for her & wanted to know if she was doing well. Soooo happy to see that she seems to be independent, happy, and a glowing mother of one (and the child seems to be 3 or 4 so she was in her 20s when she became a mother). I'm glad she escaped the cycle and didn't wind up a teen mom on benefits like several of her sisters, and her mother.

@@TheBizzle1984 to me there is a big difference between parentification and teaching children to have emotions and be self sufficient. If the children feel as though that have too look after themselves and their siblings because their parents will not then yes it's not good. But in this situation I think it's more just teaching the kids to be strong an independent, but also know that their parents are there if they need them and the parents will still do the majority of looking after them. I could be wrong, only the children could tell us if they feel like they were parentified or not.

The fact the kids are aware of the cost of living, easily able to forgo a personal luxury for the sake of a wedding is incredibly unselfish. That's life skills school doesn't teach.
