I was recently trying to remember putting Toasters in 3000's but couldn't recall. As soon as i heard "hacked case" it all came flooding back. I never liked doing it but I was just the one putting them togethers.

I'm the "guilty party" who took a hack saw to those amiga cases 🤦‍ Back then the idea of being able to carry around an Amiga 3000 that could 1) get on a Novell NetWare network via Ethernet 2) run video toaster demos with a built-in TBC, and 3) run ATT SvRR4 Unix was nothing short of astonishing! The case "hack" was required to get the Toaster to fit. Then the power supply was upgraded to handle all the current draw requirements. It was an amazing box to demo back then!

@@VernGraner I worked for a Commodore/Newtek dealer on the tech side. I used a Dremel and metal nibbler to cut just enough metal to get the card in and provide access to the BNC connectors. It was a "hack" in both the figurative and literal sense. I didn't like doing it and recall at just how awful the end result looked.

I feel that! It was a weird expedition to dig through a lot of old boxes and go through all my old CBM stuff prepping to send these things to Chris. It was nostalgic and emotional for me. I was a real True Believer™ in the Amiga and was thoroughly convinced that the superior technology would win in the end. Sadly, I was wrong. The world went Windows and my beloved machines withered on the CBM vine. 😢 I have great memories from that time - and quite a few more boxes of Amiga related "Stuff" from back then. After seeing Chris joy at examining all the "goodies" I sent in, I'm considering digging around and maybe sending another fun CBM surprise box to him in the near future.. we'll see! 😁😂🤣

You need a plain old SCSI QIC150 tape drive for those UX tapes. I used to run one for backups on my A4000 wiyh an Oktagon SCSI HBA (Host Bridge Adapter). Remember that you can use the Zulu to take image copies off those old SCSI drives as stand-alone. Just add power and a SCSI cable.

I carried that baby to a LOT of trade shows. That said, it was kinda a pain as trade show power was not the most reliable and we didn't have any UPS systems. So, if we had a power glitch (happened often, sadly) the AMIX box would wake up and do a file system check (FSK) and it took a LONG time to complete. There were times folks stopped by to see the AMIX box and all they got to see was the shell slowly making its way through the hard drive to ensure it wasn't damaged by a power glitch. 🤦‍

This was amazing to watch (I guess maybe I *over* packed them - but well.. I didn't want them broken in transit! The foam between the cards was also just inserted to keep them from flexing if the box got dropped.. so yeah.. really overkill ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ I just want to say I am SO happy I was able to put some of the materials that had been sitting in my storage bins, directly into the hands of someone who will value them, share them, and keep them for the future! I'm pretty sure I have more of this kind of stuff scattered hither and yon through my version of the Indianan Jones warehouse! 😁 Maybe I should think about sending another box 'o goodies to Dr Chirs 🤔 As for the 3000UX, that baby traveled with me all around the US as I went to dealerships and tradeshows. Back then, I had a foam lined "Anvil" style travel case for it (not really sure where it ended up 🤔). I'm a little sad there was a scratch right across the "UX" badge on the front of the unit, but it had a storied life and "earned" its scars on the road being an ambassador for CBM. Again BIG THANKS to Dr. Chris for giving so much of his time and energy and money to keeping Amigas up and running around the world. I was proud to put the UX in his hands so as to guarantee it has a super bright future being cared for by one of the best CATS techs out there! 😁

It came with an external tape drive when I received it. However, the drive was normally only used for the install so there wasn't a reason to carry it around with the unit which I think is why they tended to disappear (put in a box that got lost in the closet) ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I don't doubt you are correct. I was based in Austin TX at the time and the IBM plant had a habit of dumping surplus bits and pieces to some small tech resale shops around the city. I'm pretty sure that's where those 3.5" SCSI drives came from. I'm sad Dr. Chris couldn't get them to be "seen" long enough to dump their data. I will likely try a recovery of the data some time down the road when I have time and workbench space. :)

The amount of perfectly good hardware that IBM sent to industrial crushers from our sites was staggering. Rather than give it to local schools or charities they just paid to have it crushed and shredded. Yet as an employee you could request old hardware for personal permanent home use, as long as your manager signed the paperwork all good, just pick what you needed.

ive only heard of that working on some old nvidia gfx cards where the soldering was sketchy even brand new, they "might" work for a bit, but the dodgy solder would eventually fail much earlier than usual, heating them up a bit sometimes helped fix the solder and you got a bit more life out of the cards, other than that ive not heard of any other valid reason for such treatment.

In fact, it won't load any kickstart file above v1.3. I even tried old superkickstart 2.x disks. Weird. I see my power LED flashing about 7 times and then it repeats. Screen is blank the whole time. If I power on with the mouse buttons held, I still get the kickstart 1.4 boot menu and I can boot into Workbench 1.3 (floppy or HD) just fine. Weird. AmigaTestKit RAM tests passed.
